I'm taking Brett Farve,
Let's compare stats...
Brett Joe
Passing yards: 61,655 40,551
Passing TDs 442 273
INTS 288 139
Completions 5,377 3,409
Rushing Yards 1,786 1,676
Rushing TDs 13 20
Games 255 192
Brett wins in 5 out of these seven crucial categories and that was while he was playing with avearge WRs only mostly bad teams with bad weather at the majority of his home games and with a front office that refused to spend money on great players.
Montana played on some of the best teams ever in great weather with the best WR of all-time and several others that were pro bowlers.
Good Luck Yoda....

I say JOE MONTANA.
Brett IS great. But I can't rank him ahead of Joe.
First, I applaud you for not glossing over the interceptions category. Brett has some amazing career stats and it is only fair that his (no. 1 all-time!) INT stats be part of the discussion. He's a great QB but his 'gunslinger' mentality sometimes also got him into trouble.
I don't really find the 'Games Played' category to be 'crucial'. Brett's lead in 'games' over Montana's only weakens the effect of the other categories where he shows a lead. In other words, the per-game or season stats often tell a better story than career stats. (eg. Brett led in career completions - but also in INcompletions).
I could also easily choose 7 stats and show 5 where Montana wins. (Montana wins in comp%, fumbles, INT, rush td, QB pass rating)
However, the discussion should not simply be about stats. Stats do not tell the whole story.
Montana is a top 5 QB all-time because of his GREAT post-season play. Yes, he had some great teammates, but he also was a leader with the ability to make them better. He was known as Mr. Clutch.
16-7 in playoffs. 4 Superbowl titles!
Good luck, LSU

Sorry if I'm making you wait, I'm jumping from fannation to watching Family guy,.
And the games played category is very crucial because it shows that Brett is a much more durable player than Joe, Joe missed atleast one game 12 out of the 17 seasons that he was in the NFL and that shows tha he doesn't have toughness that Brett has. And when scouts evaluate a QB's talent Durabiltiy is one of the top ten things you look for in a QB.
And notice that all of the stats that you chose are much less crucial stats than ones I chose. When comparing stats who is gonna leave out Passing yards and TD's and add in Fumbles? That's ridiculous...
Also, when assessing the better QB how fair is it to compare Super bowl titles between the two, Brett never played with a great receiving core, an established running game, or an incredible defense, but Montana did, you can't blame him for that....
also you can partially blame the high INT count on constantly playing in the cold weather and without much talent at WR. with the combo of the two that will result in several INTs that are not necessarily your fault....
I'd like to see Joe try to play under those conditions...
YODA said 07/18, 03:15 AM
Toughness? Okay, I'll give Favre the edge there (But you are misterpreting why Joe sat out occasional games. In end of year meaningless games, you often get your back-up some game-time).
I didn't say the stats I chose we're 'crucial'. The point I was making about stats is that one can choose any stats that seem to support your guy and leave out ones that don't.
Example: You put in career rushing yrds (1786 Brett vs 1676 Joe) and said that was a 'crucial' stat where Brett wins. But that stat only shows that JOE is the per season and per game leader. Brett played 25% more games but only rushed for 7% more yards.
TITLES are a fair thing to look at. In the post-season, you face (on avg) tougher teams than the reg season. Joe's performance IMPROVES in the playoffs. The ultimate goal of a team is to get the title. If you prove to be a key part of that, it is very important. Ask Peyton.
I don't 'disqualify' Brett for not having as many rings. And I don't claim Brett had better teams than Montana. But Montana did overall show a higher level and a more consistent level of GREAT play in the playoffs than Brett.
INT: Brett No. 1 in warm weather too ;-)

Super Bowls are a team achievement. I do give Joe the edge over Brett I do think its close. Brett didn't have the teams Montana had but he did win. I am very angry with Brett right now but he was great.

Why fan nation is so stuck on stats is beyond me. Longevity stats don't mean a damn thing yet most people can't get over that UNLESS the topic is Emmitt Smith, then the discussion gets skewed by bias against the Cowboys.
1. Brett Favre was NOT the best QB ever. Not even close.
2. Pete Rose was NOT the best hitter ever. Not even in the top 20
3. There are lies, damned lies, and statistics. The latter get abused in many professions, but in sports they are WAY over abused. Many stats in all sports are the result of a system one plays in, or the players they play with.
4. People want to argue players they never saw play were "best ever" based on stats. Absurd. Jim Brown was bigger than the linebackers of his day. Think he'd stand a chance in todays game? Absurd.
I watched Brett Favre lose last years championship game by throwing an incredibly stupid interception in OT. I've watched him blow up in many playoff games, including throwing 6 int in a game because he was forcing the ball. I loved Brett Favre in the 90's because he was the Cowboys personal bltch. You won't see Aikman brought up in any of these "best ever" TD's but he totally and completely dominated Favre and the Packers when it counted.
Brett was very good for a long time. Better than Montana? Not a chance in hell. Montana was a leader, Favre was not. Montana was willing to mentor the QB's below him. Favre was not. Montana was completely calm under pressure and calmed his teammates (Hey, is that John Candy in the 1st row, he once asked in a huddle on a critical drive in the Super Bowl) Favre was not, he pressed in the post season and tried to do it all himself. EASY vote right.

"Why fan nation is so stuck on stats is beyond me."
Because stats are the facts, everything else is someone's opinion. Just like its most people's opinion that Emmitt Smith had a better line than Barry Sanders and that is the reason Emmitt has more rushing yards. Last I checked all the guys that blocked for Barry were pro's just like the ones that blocked for Emmitt. Which means what? They both had the best football players in the world blocking for them otherwise they wouldn't have been in the NFL in the first place.

Favre has better stats. Just like Marino did. But most experts still say Joe was the better all-around QB. The same applies here. Though Brett was fortunate enough to have a good defence, otherwise he'd join Dan as Super Bowl-less QB's.

Statistics don't lie, but they can be misused. To say guy A is better because he has more yards or TDs is absurd- longevity alone means nothing. It's the QUALITY of play, not just QUANTITY.
Brett Favre is simply not a top 5 QB. The numbers you need to look at are those such as rating, yds/game, yds/attempt, TD %, INT%...the numbers that show how he did relative to how much he played. Aggregates are only so useful.

The bottom line is Montana DID NOT make mistakes in critical situations. As great as Favre is, what makes him great is also what makes him flawed, he is highly emotional. Without much effort, you recal several critiacl Favre mistakes in critical situations. How many such instances can you recall involving Montana? While I am sure there were a couple, they were so few and far between you probably can't remember even one.
I am niether a 9er fan nor a Packer fan but given one critical game, I would chose Montana to run my offense every day of the week and twice on "SUNDAY."
