1. No stealing my idea
2. No Pushing- pick a side and argue
3. If you don't LIKE the TD concept- then go start your own TDs and get the SMURF offa mine.

Will the W/L of the RAVENS improve or Decline

My Pick IMPROVE

Obviously I say they'll decline.

First off, their schedule. The AFC North has arguably the toughest schedule in the NFL. Besides playing the Steelers and Browns twice, the Ravens have to play the AFC South and NFC East, which have a combined SIX playoff teams and ZERO losing records. I mean, the Ravens only play four games against teams with losing records, and two of them are against the Bengals!

Also, as a team did they really improve? For them to do better, their QB situation needs to be resolved. I know they drafted Joe Flacco, but it is pretty rare for a QB to come in and save the day.

Look at the last few rookie 1st round QBs who started their first years...

Vince Young posted a 66.7 QB rating.
Matt Leinart posted a 74.0 QB rating.
Jay Cutler did well (88.5), but in only a 5 game period.
Alex Smith? 40.8 rating.
Jason Campbell? 76.5 through 7 games.
Eli? 55.4.

The only one who really proved himself capable over most of a season was Big Ben. Unless Flacco can come close to duplicating that success, which is unlikely, the Ravens will struggle.

More next argument.

I know they drafted Joe Flacco, but it is pretty rare for a QB to come in and save the day.

Good point, the Steelers waited a DECADE for thier QB Situation to gel

That Vince Young kid and his 8-5 rookie record just did JACK right?

True the Ravens are looking at a rough rookie year- but the Ravens have one thing the QBs you mention DIDN;t have. (other than Big Ben)

A DEFENSE- not to mention a HALL OF FAME OT watching his blind side.

He also has some things they didn;t have Todd Heap- a ProBowl TE, plus a solid combo at RB with Rice and McGahee.

Lets face it- the Ravens D gives them a LARGE room for error on the Offensive side of the ball - they did win 13 games year before last

They are going to play a Ball Control Offense and a TOUGH D- and they have VERY good special teams- with thier secondary being 100% unlike last year- They will have a top 3 D again.

.

and thats IF Flacco even plays- Troy Smith is more than decent as a backup and Kyle Boller has 5 years of Clipboard holding

Yeah, quite the defense they have over there in Baltimore.

The one that last year was ranked 23rd in the NFL in points allowed? Yeah, quite a group they have there.

And plenty of youth among their stars. In fact, of the 7 starters on that D who have ever made a Pro Bowl, THREE of them are under 30, although one of them turns 30 in early September (Ed Reed).

JOE FLACCO DOES NOT HAVE A HOF LT BLOCKING HIS BLIND SIDE.

You remember Ogden retired, don't you? Now he has Jared Gaither and/or Oniel Cousins at LT. So yeah, he might have a teensie bit of trouble.

This "excellent" Defense helped them jack last year, and I don't see how with their stars getting any older they'll do much more to bail out their offense this time around.

And who says their secondary will be healthy? Both of their starting CBs are over 30, and Ed Reed is going to be 30 by September!

And Ed Reed...what happened to him? Sure, he was a ballhawk last year, but he had 39 tackles in 16 starts! That's barely 2 tackles a game...

Troy Smith is an inexperienced backup, Kyle Boller has a reserved seat on the bench...why would either of these guys lead Baltimore to a better record than last year, exactly?

I am sorry that Ed Reed tackles did not live up to your standards-

Maybe it was the 7 picks he got last year- good for 3rd in the NFL last year.

NFL Leader Got Antonio Cromartie 39 Tackles with his 10 picks

Guess he can;t tackle either?

Rex Ryan stayed as Def Coord in Baltimore - over the past 5 years the Ravens have been

3,6,5,1 and 6th in yardage on the Defensive Side- yes they slid a bit- do you think that has ANYTHING to do with the Offense dropping from 12th to 24th in points?

The Ravens ALSO went from FIRST in Takeaway/Giveaway ratio to DEAD LAST in the category.

Think that might have something to do with CamCam coming on board with the New QB?

Jared Gaither is only 21 350+ and 6-9 not a bad guy to have infront of you- and was pretty good when Ogden went down last year.

Oneil Cousins is 6'4 and 300 - and is most likely going to Guard from what I hear (or what the NFL Network tells me)

finally as BAD as the Ravens were last year- they DID split with the Steelers last year.

Fast Fact on Boller-

His Comp % has gone up EACH of the last FIVE YEARS

The Ravens split with the Steelers? Are you kidding??

The Steelers didn't even use their starters in their second game against the Ravens, it was in Week 17! If the Ravens didn't split, it would have been amazingly pathetic! Even then they barely won against the Steelers' backups, 27-21.

The Ravens also have a brand new coach, unproven John Harbaugh.

So, tell me, how many teams with a rookie QB and a rookie Head Coach improved?

Kyle Boller's completion % has gone up the last 5 years? Well, last year it was 61.1%, which was good for 22nd among qualifying QBs. Guess he has a ways to go, eh?

Fast fact on Boller #2-

In 3 out of 5 of his seasons, he has thrown more INT than TD (including last year).

Yep, his accuracy is spot on.

I don't care how tall Oniel Cousins is...if height determined abilities, Yao Ming would currently be playing in the NFL.

As far as Cromartie goes, he didn't even start every game he played in, he played nickel for 8 games last year (or was it dime?). And yeah, maybe he isn't a good tackler. Deion wasn't. That has no bearing on my argument that Reed seems to have lost his tackling edge.

While the Raven's schedule is tough, I find it hard to believe they'll only win 4. Tough to argue, Lifer. I give you props for taking it (I didn't). Will wait for more arguments before my vote.

July 21, 2008  03:10 PM ET

Definately Improve. The AFC north is not the toughest in the NFL, the NFC east is!

I think the changes on the offense will revitalize the defense's hope and they will actually be 2nd in their division.

July 21, 2008  03:22 PM ET

I never said the AFC North was the toughest in the NFL...I said they had arguably the toughest schedule.

Boller is starting the season as the QB.............

Boller is starting the season as the QB.............

July 21, 2008  03:42 PM ET

If Boller starts the season at QB, it's not going to be for long.

July 21, 2008  03:45 PM ET

That is a very funny episode of South park Lifer

July 21, 2008  03:46 PM ET

hmmm, i know this is random, but Shockey has been traded to the Saints

July 21, 2008  03:56 PM ET

Good stuff in your second argument, Lifer.

July 21, 2008  04:00 PM ET

When you bottom out, you have nowhere to go but left.

July 21, 2008  04:06 PM ET

Initially, I was leaning left, but Lifer's making a hell of an argument. Can't wait to see how this goes.

July 21, 2008  04:34 PM ET

did you do these kast year because I've seens Tds like this I think

KG Fan Anything is possible

Nope.

July 21, 2008  09:03 PM ET

Great arguments on the right; however, I'm leaning left because it won't be THAT hard to improve over last season. The Ravens D is not as ominous as it used to be. Everybody's getting old. Not older. OLD, and that's bad.

July 22, 2008  01:16 AM ET

Vote right because Jared Gaither is not a HOF left tackle.

July 22, 2008  05:18 PM ET

Yup, nothing like missing someone- then talking about his replacement to kill me on a 2100 word arguement.

Dosen;t that get balanced out by Lifer stating that Ed Reed can;t tackle?

July 22, 2008  10:56 PM ET

You never proved he could, though...
