Some try to place the UFC ahead of other "sports powers" in terms of their place in "mainstream sports america" today. That is not the case. It is still far behind boxing, hockey, cycling, and olympic sports in terms of its "mainstream publicity/popularity" level.

The UFC isn't top enough to compete with the big 4 yet, however...

It is far more popular than cycling, and it is also more popular than Olympic sports seeing as the olympics are on once every 2 years!

The UFC fan base has grown 106% the last year, and that is #1 among all sports in America. The UFC gets more viewers than Soccer, Pro Tennis, and Golf.

UFC is BOOMING in America. There are now 54 readily available DVD's for purchase, and the US Consensus Bureau says that by 2010, there will be 400!

That is a boom, and the UFC is already outselling Boxing, and WWE on PPV's. So overall, they are more popular than boxing, clycling, and olympic sports.

More to come

If Mayweather had gone on Rampage's Rampage how would it hit the news?

If Lance or Landis had gone on Rampage's Rampage how would it hit the news?

When Hogan gets divorced how does it hit the news?

If any US olympic athlete went on Rampage's Rampage how would it hit the news?

The UFC's top star went on a flat tire, sidewalk, car plowing, people diving out of the way rampage and it was reported on TMZ.com????

Its not where "UFC Fans" think it is. Yet.

The Saturday night fight between Quentin Jackson and Dan Henderson at UFC 75 drew an average of 4.7 million viewers. It was the most watched MMA event in NORTH AMERICAN HISTORY! The numbers peaked at a staggering 5.6 million viewers at one point during the bout.

Overall, the three-hour broadcast was most popular for men ages 18 to 49. The telecast got more viewers in a 3 hours span than college football, NASCAR and, not surprisingly, the women's final at the U.S. (tennis) Open.

Now NASCAR, and CFB are some of the most watched events every year. If UFC/MMA drew more than them, it is naive to say that they aren't as popular as everyone thinks.

Your First Paragraph is simply comparing MMA to MMA to try to prove its outgrown other sports??? Im not sure I understand how that helps??

I am going to call your bluff saying it got more viewers than College Football. Thats complete BS and you, I, and everyone on Fannation knows that. The BCS title game was just shy of 22M viewers, yes over 4 times as many as the top event in MMA history (according to you).

The Daytona 500 had 18M viewers. Yes over 3 times the top MMA event in history (thats not my stat thats yours.

I guess you read 4M and assumed that was a lot, yet we all know what we do when we assume right? You make and **** our of U and ME.

My point is that Andy Dick would have gotten more attention than the UFC's top star. The proof is in the pudding.

I never said they got more views than Daytona, or that they got more views than BCS game. You put that stuff in the argument, not me!

Here are the exact numbers if you wanted to know:

Saturday, September 8th, the UFC drew 4. 7 Million viewers. It peaked at 5.4 million like I said earlier.
THIS is what I was comparing it to.
Take that 4.7 million from Jackson vs. Henderson and compare it to 2.3 million for Oregon vs. Michigan on ABC

1.3 million for Notre Dame vs. Penn St on ESPN,
1.3 million for Virginia Tech vs. LSU on ESPN
2.1 million for NASCAR on ABC
and 546,000 for the U.S. Open Women???s Final on CBS.

There are the numbers. Now, I wasn't assuming anything, that is the actual stats. Please do your research before you blast these legit numbers!

From March 06-March 07,

the UFC leads internet interest w/ 106% growth
NHL is second w/ 35% growth
Nascar, Basketball, Football, Tennis, and baseball were all in the negatives

The LSU vs. VaTech game was #2 in the country vs. #9. If UFC got more viewers than that game, and 2 others, they are getting the right popularity.

Also, these #'s were from Sep. 2007!

July 21, 2008  09:45 AM ET

If you have 10, and the next year you have 21, that would be a growth factor of around 106%. Seriously, don't give me stats like that. They mean nothing.

And the argument that the UFC is more popular than the Olympics is uninformed at best. It isn't even more popular than golf. To say that ignores simple reality.

July 21, 2008  09:47 AM ET

Gruden:

It was their viewer growth. Their website got 106% more hits this year than last year and the year isn't over yet!

tmz has had the scoop on brady's messed up foot before the superbowl, and the leinhardt deal

July 21, 2008  10:01 AM ET

What? YOu're arguing hits on a website and claim that means their fanbase grew by 106%? How about if I check it twice a day instead of once. Once from my house and once from my job? Suddenly it appears that twice as many people are checking?

I only want to know one thing: How many people are watching? And I GUARANTEE that more people watched the Open Championship final yesterday than has ever watched a UFC match. It isn't even close.

not first, and for 3 days a link to their site was the only way you could get photos

they had the video and were the first to report on the brady foot boot deal.

July 21, 2008  10:16 AM ET

it is bad to run up the website hits, how about running up the MASSIVE increase in PPV sales over the last three years.

July 21, 2008  10:17 AM ET

The real test for MMA's success is how well EliteFC draws on its 2nd non-cable broadcast...and yes I realize that EliteFC is inferior to UFC, but the non-cable airings are the best way to measure success..

That said, 106% growth of a viewer base of say, 500,000 is only slightly over 1 million....and I think I was pretty generous w/ a 500,000 guess (non-PPV event)

July 21, 2008  10:18 AM ET

And I GUARANTEE that more people watched the Open Championship final yesterday than has ever watched a UFC match. It isn't even close.

i would wager against that... mma is growing and its just the ufc.. (though they are the undisputed kings) affliction just had a show.. wec.. dream.. they are all drawing large views. i will not say it as popular as nascar (which is not a sport.. i dont care if you dumb rednecks get mad) or college football (it never will be) but it is showing positive signs of growth and is surpassing boxing. the word "mainsteam" may not be a great way to describe it, because ignorant old fools and people who dont understand the sport call it barbaric and violent, but that is only because they knwo nothing of it.

bdawk, to argue against this statement is probably the stupidest comment in the history if FN, more people world wide watched the open yesterday than have watched an MMA fight, total, ever, combined, all time

July 21, 2008  10:23 AM ET

now we are going to every college game in his argument, well I will tell you what, we will take every Natl Televised NCAA Football game last year and combine the #'s, then we will take every Televised MMA event period and combine the #'s, the MMA (as a whole including but not limited to the UFC) will not make 3% of the NCAAFB viewership

July 21, 2008  10:27 AM ET

frank i usually agree with you even though you are quasi-insane. and does world wide really matter??? if thats the case every statement about football being popular is untrue and we should all just td about soccer all day.. but here in the us no one watches golf, soccer, or hockey. though you may not like it, it is a fact that mma is growing and is a legitimate sport.

July 21, 2008  10:29 AM ET

"It is far more popular than cycling, and it is also more popular than Olympic sports seeing as the olympics are on once every 2 years!"

Bass masters is more popular than cycling, unless the Tour de France is happening. And the Olympic comparison isn't fair. That doesn't make it mainstream.

July 21, 2008  10:29 AM ET

and there is no point in comparing ufc to college football... thats not even close. college football has more viewers than almost any sport in the us (because of how many people the stadiums hold) but to compare mma to golf is just insulting..

=============

Frank addressed this, but they reported on Brady because he happens to F models. Perez Hilton had the Brady boot as a special edition because Perez Hilton actually wants to do Brady himself. Rampage hit TMZ and...well...where else? Eventually it had to get reported on by the big sites.

July 21, 2008  10:33 AM ET

I do have to add thsi about the discussion world wide, if you want to include the world then let's bring Japan into the discussion, or Russia they love them some MMA, and in Japan it has been HUGE forever.

July 21, 2008  10:33 AM ET

It was on ESPN

July 21, 2008  10:51 AM ET

Seriously, you'd argue that more people watch a UFC pay per view than watched the British Open final yesterday? The Open Championship is broadcast AROUND THE WORLD. Over 3 million AMERICAN TVs are tuned in. Show me ONE UFC match with 3 million viewers.

July 21, 2008  10:54 AM ET

Let alone the millions more around the world.
