Easy, list the best player for each position, and they must have played that position (ex. Reggie Miller can't be a SF). Also, no modern players.....

PG: John Stockton
SG: Michael Jordan
SF: Julius Erving (Dr. J)
PF: Karl Malone
C: Wilt Chamberlain

PG: John Stockton
SG: Michael Jordan

SF: *Larry Bird

Honors: Elected to Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame (1998); NBA champion (1981, '84, '86); NBA Finals MVP (1984, '86); NBA MVP (1984, '85, '86); Nine-time All-NBA First Team (1980-88); All-NBA Second Team (1990); All-Defensive Second Team (1982, '83, '84); NBA Rookie of the Year (1980); One of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History (1996); Olympic gold medalist (1992)

Larry Bird has almost 3,000 more points than Dr.J, and more assists. Bird also has better RPG, PPG, APG stats. While Dr.J has more blocks and rebounds.

PF: Karl Malone

C: Wilt Chamberlain

Looking at Larry Bird vs. Dr. J, we see two different styles of SF. Dr. J wasn't an outside shooter like his counterpart Larry, Dr. J was more of an inside player, who could penetrate and score.

Bird also had a much more dominant supporting cast, which allowed him to perform better. With players like Robert Parrish, Kevin McHale, Dennis Johnson, and Danny Ainge (plus later on a worn out Bill Walton) he was surrounded by guys who could let him play.

Julius year after year carried his Philly team until they got Moses Malone and still having one man doesn't make up for the massive cast that Bird had.

There's no denying how great these two players were, but in my opinion Julius was a better player, because he put up very impressive numbers with a team that couldn't support his talent, compared to Bird who had one of the greatest casts of all time.

Even though bird had a great supporting cast, he was the one who carried that team also. He was a better defender and rebounder than Dr.J He was also a better passer who was always consistent most of the time.

Larry Bird was one of the reasons that the Celtics got 3 rings. Dr.J only got one. Like you said, Dr.J and Larry Bird were two dfferent players, but because of the reasons above, Larry Bird is the better player.

Forfeited Turn

Like I said, Larry Bird is a better all-around player than Dr.J. If you look at my arguments, you'll see the stats to back it up.

Time to vote!!!!!!!!

Yes, my brother in comedy, Will Ferrell.......aka Mets Fan

July 21, 2008  09:30 PM ET

I'm predicting that you will change the PG and/or SF positions

July 21, 2008  09:34 PM ET

Good line up I could make 2 changes though

July 21, 2008  09:35 PM ET

would it be PG and SF???

July 21, 2008  09:40 PM ET

Yes it would be - I'm guessing you know what I'm guessing, ha

July 21, 2008  09:42 PM ET

Larry Bird over Dr. J easy. Remember, you said NBA in your title so you can't talk about his ABA stats.

Also, Magic over Stockton.

July 21, 2008  09:42 PM ET

Not really, I took my two weakest positions.....usually people put Magic Johnson ahead of John.

And not many people would take Dr. J

July 21, 2008  09:43 PM ET

Let me guess, you would change Stockton to Magic Johnson. Good Luck terpsfan

July 21, 2008  09:47 PM ET

I'll finish this tomorrow.

Mets fan got it right with Bird. He is easily the greatest SF of all time and the greatest rebounding SF of all time also. He was a great scorer, shooter, passer, rebounder, defender... really everything you could ask from a player. Plus he was ultra consistent.

But no Magic from either of you? I don't know if I can vote with the GOAT PG ommited from your teams.

Hey EFB, who owns the record for most assists in a season?
Who's #2
Who's #3
Who's #4

On the all time list, who ranks #2 in assists?

Look if you say Magic as #1 I can live with it......but if Stockton's not in your top 3 you might want to re-examine you list.

July 21, 2008  10:12 PM ET

No modern savage

July 21, 2008  10:13 PM ET

Good luck to you Mets

July 21, 2008  10:32 PM ET

EFB Maravich is definitely not a top 3 PG. He was a fhasly passer and scorer but not a good passer or effecient scorer at all. Stockton definitely over Maraivich.

And Magic has to be number one. Easily.

July 22, 2008  12:43 AM ET

Magic Johnson is better than Stockton. Stockton might have the assist record but Magic has 5 rings and some nardely passes himself.

July 22, 2008  12:57 AM ET

When you have 2 of the 5 players in the all time lineup on a team yet NO rings you may wanna re think that lineup.

Stockton had to go up against Jordan's Bulls. We're talking about great players, winning Championships is a team effort.

Stockton only made it to the finals twice so its not like he was regularly getting shot down by MJ. And sure rings are a team effort but if you cant lead your team to a ring with one of the best PFs of all time, that says something about your leadership.
