No player in sports is worth his salary more than Josh Hamilton.

Humm, sounds like you really liked the Homerun derby. I know Hamilton is a badas* besides the HR derby but there has to be somebody out there...

Paul Pierce was worth whatever the heL* he makes. He wrecked the playoffs!

Im from Dallas buddy and i have watched Hamilton all year, The derby introduced the rest of the country to hamiliton

Paul Pierce's last contract was 3 yrs 59 million. Do you really think that pierce's 20 mill per year is worth more than Hamilton's $300,000 salry this year. The story alone has brought the Ranger's so much revenue, and his League leading RBI"S dont hurt either. Pierce may have the title but with 20 mill i expect a title. The Rangers are getting the bet value for their buck by far. Pierce is not even the best player on his team.

Pierce is the captain. His huge game against Lebron in game 7 showed what he is worth. Yes, Hamilton is underpaid but Pierce hasn't had a problem w/ drugs either.

Paul Pierce=Finals MVP

Also, it was a huge hit for the nba. Remember the cover LA vs Boston what AMERICA WANTS? I think that 20 million he makes or at least you say was giving because he slashed to the rim everytime on LA. Pierce brought the Nba and STern a higher rating. I'm not hating on my KG or Ray Allen because obviously Pierce couldn't do it without him but Pierce was the best player in the league during thte playoffs. Pierce is the "truth" and Hamilton is raw. Hamilton has never been in the post season. Pierce has stayed loyal to those Boston fans and I don't think with the money they have, mind giving him a nice check. All the nba players are overpaid in my opinion but Pierce if any deserves his check. Hamilton and Pierce are on two totally different levels.

Pierce stayed loyal because he was getting paid, he got soft when he was losing but then you bring two superstars aroubd and he's the ultimate team player. (please). If your getting paid 20 mill a year then you brtter step up.

You bring up Hamiltons drug problem, but if anything his drug problem has brought more revenue to the Rangers.
Keep in mind the guy didnt swing a bat for three years and too take that much time off and come back and perform the way he has is remarkable.
Pierce is great and his acting is even better but the difference with him and Hamilton is 19,700,000 dollars.

Hanley Ramirez: current salary $439,000
YODA | 07/22/08, 01:58 AM

Yoda made a better argument than both of you and he's not even in this TD. That's either really really sad or Yoda is the smartest person alive.

July 22, 2008  02:03 AM ET

Check your sources Yoda because Hanley signed a huge contract two months ago

July 22, 2008  02:06 AM ET

Hanley Ramirez's six-year, $70MM deal will be officially announced Saturday. MLB.com's Joe Frisaro has the details of the contract. reported by By Tim Dierkes [May 16, 2008 at 10:45pm CST]

July 22, 2008  02:06 AM ET

Elway, starts next year.

July 22, 2008  02:09 AM ET

What a story. If I had kids I would tell them his story. Hey kids, that guy in the derby hitting all these homeruns was snorting and possibly even shooting up not too long ago! What a role model. Seriously, its not a good story. He did it to HIMSELF.

July 22, 2008  02:10 AM ET

I would stil say Hamilton's contract is a better deal because of the money he has made and will make for the rangers

July 22, 2008  02:11 AM ET

Hamiltons been good I guess. RBIs are the most overrated stats in baseball and when thats the only stat to the guys name I just dont buy into it.

July 22, 2008  02:11 AM ET

Check YOUR sources ElwayB2B. He signed a contract EXTENSION. His CURRENT salary is $439,000.

(And they STILL got him for cheap by baseball standards...Some consider him one of the top 5 in the game and but they locked him up for 11.5 m a season)

July 22, 2008  02:15 AM ET

Anyway Elway,

I know what you're saying. But since Peachy isn't gointg to give you much of a TD up there (Pierce???), I thought I should jump in down here.

Do you really think Hamilton will be able to be locked up for under 11.5 m in his next deal?

July 22, 2008  02:17 AM ET

No player in professional team sports are worth more then their salary. A Major League Baseball player makes more money just from their annual pension funds then most of us earn working 9 to 5 jobs. They really have it made.

July 22, 2008  02:23 AM ET

Yoga i agree that pierce is the wrong opponent and Hanley is The S***.
EFB.. JL mr. 5555 You obviously dont have kids, but take a minute and think how many kids have drug addictions in this world, The story about Hamiliton is great because so many young athletes have drug problems and wish they could get away from it but yet they cant. Hamilton gives them that hope

July 22, 2008  02:25 AM ET

I would like to congratulate you, YODA, on getting the first comment on the T&R about Ellsbury being benched...nice :D

July 22, 2008  02:25 AM ET

Not quite true TradeAngelos. (although I do see the point you are making)

They certainly have it made...but some are MORE overpaid than others.

But remember...there are MANY professions outside of sports where if you are in the top 1% in the world, you earn over a million a year. (Hamilton and Ramirez are making less than that right now). And few other professions are limited to the average 7 year career of a pro team athlete.

July 22, 2008  02:28 AM ET

I would like to congratulate you, YODA, on getting the first comment on the T&R about Ellsbury being benched...nice :D

July 22, 2008  02:34 AM ET

hahahahahaha you think DRUG ADDICTS watch BASEBALL. I guarantee more people are HURT by Hamiltons story than HELPED.

Think about it, no drug addicts care about sports. At least the hard drug users coke and past. So lets see, his story wont inspire any druggies to stop using

BUT

imagine a 7 year old watching the game. Hears about it thinks its really cool. Goes to his mom and asks what cocain is. She lies of course and who knows, maybe that kids ENTIRE life changes because of hamilton introducing this drug to him

As it stands, my situation will happen a helluva lot more than yours and you would have to be on something to disagree.

July 22, 2008  02:42 AM ET

The thing with coke is...

The final chapter in the Josh Hamilton comeback story may not have been written yet. Coke has a very high relapse rate. Especially among those who can afford it. The relapse trap is easy for them to fall into because it's physically addictive, it gives people feelings of invulnerabilty, and it doesn't immediately 'impair' performance/health the same way some other drugs (heroin, pcp, etc.) do. Darrell Strawberry and Tim Raines are a couple that immediately come to mind...but there are LOTS of others. Let's really hope Hamilton can keep it up. He's in a good place now.

July 22, 2008  02:46 AM ET

Hamilton makes $396,830 this year. Kinda hard to round that down to $300k.

I'll take Carlos Quentin making almost an identical amount but carrying his team to 1st place. Hamilton is a product of his ball park. Quentin is not.

Hamilton - .356BA/14HR/1.083OPS at home. .268BA/7HR/.758OPS on the road.

Quentin - .266BA/12HR/.902OPS at home. .293BA/11HR/.924OPS on the road.

As you can clearly see, Quentin is consistent no matter where he plays. Hamilton, not so much.

July 22, 2008  02:48 AM ET

"Darrell Strawberry and Tim Raines are a couple that immediately come to mind."

Raines? I wasn't aware he had a coke problem. Doc Gooden on the other hand...

July 22, 2008  02:51 AM ET

On the plus side, Hamilton is tested 3 times a week now. Far different from back in the Strawberry/Gooden days. We'll have to see what happens in the off season...
