My Pick - The Detroit Tigers...

With so much hype about them in the pre-season the Tigers were a big disappointment early on but have gotten back into the AL Central race and were .500 at the All Star break. Now at 5.5 games back and with a big 3 game series coming up this weekend against the AL Central leading White Sox they are in prime shape to go on a tear in the 2nd half. Come Monday they will be looking to make a big deal before the Trade Deadline next week.

Now that Rodney and Zumaya are back from injuries the bullpen is much stronger.
Verlander has won his last 4 starts and hasn't lost in his last 7.
And keep in mind that their much talked about offense has yet to heat up.

The Tigers will be the team to watch in the 2nd half...

My pick is the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Dodgers have won two straight and 4 out of there last 5 games and are looking really good right now. They've pulled into a tie for first place with the D'backs.

The Dodgers are a team that will probably go out and make a deadline deal. They are not in a very tough division and that helps them a lot.

The Dodgers are in a dvision where 84-85 wins will win the division. James Loney and Andre Ethier have picked up the offensive slack. And Nomar Garciaparra.

Chad Billingsly has had a good season, and Derek Lowe is up for a big second half.

If the Tigers don't go out a make a deal for a starting pitcher which is what they really need, I don't see them making much noise down the stretch. There ace Justin Verlander has had a tough season, and is just 8-9 with a 3.95 E.RA.

I also don't see how Rodney makes there bullpen stronger. He is 0-2 with a 6.55 E.RA. I don't see that improving there bullpen.

The Tigers are in a tougher division than the Dodgers so I don't see them winning the division or taking the wildcard. I think the Dodgers can take the division.

The Dodgers is an interesting pick but I don't see how it can be the team to watch in the 2nd half. They are in a very soft division where a game or 2 above .500 record may win the division. Besides they just lost there closer (Saito) for 2 months and possible the rest of the season. And word is that they are looking for a shortstop and or a 3rd baseman. However, with their runs allowed ranked at 28th in MLB (3rd worse) they should focus on pitching. Then again their offence is only ranked 15th out of 30 MLB teams. The word that comes to mind for the Dodgers is "Mediocre". And I doubt few people would consider a mediocre team a "team to watch".

The Tigers after going 23-32 (as of the end of May) went 19-8 in June.
And with there potent offence yet to hit there stride they should be considered the most feared team in baseball. The White Sox are in their sites and Detriot will live up to the hype in the 2nd half.

The reason the Dodgers are a team to watch out for is because they very well could take the division away from Arizona.

The Tigers are an old team and the only one of there big offseason acquisitons that is producing is Miguel Cabrera. Dontrelle Willis and Edgar Renteria have played terrible.

They have also had problems with some other of there bats that havent produced that usually do. Like Gary Sheffield.

There pitching has also been bad. Verlander has turned it around lately but still 8-9 with an E.RA almost 4 is not the numbers you want from the ace of your rotation.

You said that Rodney coming back improves there bullpen? Once again I would like for you to tell me how he does. I don't see how somebody with an E.RA over 6 is going to help you.

The Dodgers just need to get there offense going. They have had some people like Russell Martin, Matt Kemp, and James Loney doing very well. Then they have had guys like Andruw Jones who has a worse batting average than Dodger pitcher Brad Penny, not producing.

Nomar has come on as of late and is playing very well. You act like the Tigers are on fire or something they are just 5-5 in there last 10 games.

Zumaya (1.76era) is the real guy that strengthens the Pen. He is the main set up guy for Jones. & like him or not Jones gets it done with 319 career saves 18 this season. Rodney gives them additional pen depth his high era was mostly due to the shoulder probs he had earlier in the season. & he hasn't given up a run in his last 4 appearances.
As for the bats, take a look at the scores in the last 3 games (5-1, 19-4, 7-1) all wins. I would say there offence is now living up to expectations. With that potent of an offensive the rest of the AL better watch out.

Lineup Avg/HR/RBI/Hits
Granderson.295/10/34/90
Polanco .308/4/35/111
Guillen .290/8/49/96
Ordonez .310/13/55/100
Cabrera .289/17/68/108
Rodriguez .289/5/32/84
Thames .266/19/42/53

Now the Dodgers are hardly going to scare anyone. When a .500 record is going to win your division, (they are 2 gms under .500 currently). Andrew Jones has been a total bust.
Besides it's been a case of the D'backs falling rather than the Dodgers surging. LA is only 1 game over .500 at home. A mediocre team at best. I would have the Brewers or the Yankees way ahead of the Dodgers in terms of teams to watch.

The reason the Dodgers are a team to watch out for is because they have a really good team. At the beginning of the season a lot of people were picking the Dodgers to win the NL West and make some noise in the playoffs.

I still believe they can do that. They have a pretty good chance of pulling ahead of the D'backs in the division pretty soon. They have one more game with Colorado, and then they have 3 game sets with Washington and San Francisco.

The pitching of the Tigers is going to be there downfall down the stretch. And I haven't been very impressed with Todd Jones at all. His E.RA is 4.48! I don't want that from my closer if im the manager.

Let's look at the Tigers starting pitching this season.
Armando Galarraga- 7-4 3.41 E.RA
Justin Verlander- 8-9 3.95 E.RA
Jeremy Bonderman- 3-4 4.29 E.RA
Kenny Rodgers- 8-6 4.48 E.RA
Nate Robertson- 6-8 5.69 E.RA

Does that look like a playoff rotation to you? Only two of there starters have winning records and only two have E.RA's under 4. That doesn't look like a team that is going to make some noise down the stretch to me.

LA isn't really a team to watch out for, the are only one back in their division. The Tigers have a great offense and we have seen that already where they have scored 26 runs in two games against the Kansas City Royals. Taking all of this in and considering that foosball has the better arguments, I got to vote left.

July 23, 2008  12:28 PM ET

Good arguments both sides. Just a slight edge to the left though.

July 23, 2008  08:36 PM ET

The Tigers don't have pitching.
Watch out for the Dodgers!

July 23, 2008  08:57 PM ET

Armando Galarraga had a perfect game going into the 7th inning today. I think they have more pitching than what many thought.

July 23, 2008  09:12 PM ET

LA cld be a team to watch because they COULD get hot and go on a 2nd half tear like the Rockies did last season......

As much as I wanna vote for them, I cant......
