My Pick is the Titans

I do NOT think they have a good WR on the Roster- I do think they have good TE's

But they IN TOTAL got 8 TDs from the Position

Moss almost TRIPLED that by HIMSELF

and who did they draft round 1?

Thats right- a RUNNING BACK- they did not draft a WR until the bottom of round 4 or even trade for one - other than a castoff from the Jets

but that may not be the biggest Issue-

The Defense is solid- but nothing really stands out. Kearse is back- but there is NO DEPTH on that line- and the Freak is not exactly an Iron Man lately- On paper that Front Line is GREAT- but if they get worn down at ALL- then that is a MAJOR gap on the line-

and that secondary, unless Hope makes a full return, scared NO ONE.

My pick is the Texans

While the Titans have few playmakers at WR, they beat Houston in other categorie on offense..

Houston has better WRs.. but what makes you think injury prone Andre Johnson can stay healthy again? He's great when he's on the field, but last year he missed 7 games due to injury.... Also, Roydell Williams is young for Tenn. and could surprise.

The Titans win at the TE position. Adding Alge Crumpler gives Young a bigger redzone target. Also with Bo Scaife as the 2nd TE beats Owen Daniels.

Now, what got this team to the playoffs last year. Running the ball. They averaged 131 ypg good for 5th in the NFL compared to Houston's 99 17 spots later.

White in the backfield with two speedy RBs to go with him (Henry and Johnson) give the Titans a much better running game than Houston who has Ahman Green and Chris Brown.... Houston's o-line is very weak. The Titans have a very good o-line.

While Young still has problems throwing, he makes up for it with his legs. Schaub again, has problems with staying healthy. (will argue more on this later)

Titans turnover ratio:-1
Texands turnover ratio:-13

There's more than WR on offense.

Argue D next.

"While the Titans have few playmakers at WR, they beat Houston in other categorie on offense"

Point of Order!! To have a FEW that means they have to have at least ONE

Lets start the Breakdown at Behind center ok?

Vince Young
15 Games 9 Tds 17 Picks 2546 Yards Passing
Matt Schaub
11 Games 9 Tds 09 Picks 2241 Yards Passing

Hmmm Less Games, Same number of TDs- almost HALF the Picks and only 301 yards behind.

Of course your guy has been the starter for a whole extra year.

Oh and Matt was sacked
16 times in 11 games
Vince young?

25 times in 15 Games -hows that Pass Protection?

Titans
Scored 18 ppg- 22nd of 32 Teams
Texans
Scored 23.7ppg - 12 of 32 teams

and you drafted a RUNNING BACK - to help out the 5th ranked RUSHING offense in the NFL

not a WR to help that 27th ranked Passing attack.

Houston was 11 and 22 by the way- not exactly New England- but might be why they scored almost 6 PPG better.

Andre Johnson has missed a total of 10 games in 5 years- 7 of those was LAST year

Not exactly Injury Prone is he? One VERY bad year does not make him a cripple.

The Offense for Tennesse is a different one from the Texans. Comparing the two is tough because of the styles they play.

The Texans have a pass friendly offense. To stay competitive they need schaub and johnson to be fully healthy.

Young is still learning as a QB. He struggled mightly in 07, but the previous year he put up very solid numbers. I don't think it is much of a stretch saying he has a decent shot at repeating 06. For Young, he doesn't need to do much. Just limit his mistakes...

Now onto the defensive side. I think Tennesee has an advantage here.

They were in the top 10 in
PTS- 8th, YDS-5th, PassYDs- 10th, Rushyds-5th.

Albert Haynesworth is a game changer. 10-3 when he plays. He obviously makes a difference on the field.

At DE - Vanden Bosch is coming off a huge year in which he had 12 sacks.

Houston has Mario Williams, but he doesn't have the effect Haynesworth does.

Advantage on the D-line: Titans

At LB, David Thornton and Keith Bulluck are arguably the best tandom at OLB.... Bulluck's #'s declined a bit last year, but his presence and leadership still makes him a premir LB....

More playmakers in the front 7 for the Titans.

The Offense for Tennesse is a different one from the Texans

How? is the objective different? Are they going sideways on the feild? Or is their job to score points?

"Young is still learning as a QB"

Good point- seeing how if they have less than 4 years Exp - the yards count double.

Matt played Less Games had Same number of TDs- almost HALF the Picks and only 301 yards behind - and was about as close to a rookie as you can get without entering the DRAFT!

"Houston has Mario Williams, but he doesn't have the effect Haynesworth does. "

That is 100% Correct

14.0 Sacks 2 Forced Fumbles 1 recoverd - 1 def TD 43 tackles

Thats is NO WHERE NEAR the impact of

6.0 Sacks 0 Forced fumbles 0 recovered - 0 Def TDs and 32 Tackles

-- no wait- Mario's stats were listed FIRST

I think a DL scoring a TOUCHDOWN in a pretty big IMPACT don;t you?

Mario may beat Haynesworth in stats, but consider the records when the two play and it's clear Haynesworth has more effect on the outcome..

When he plays : 10-3
When he doens't : 0-3

In those 3 loses here's the amount of pts given up: 28, 34, 35.

3 outta the 4 highest points given up were without him.

I'm not all too sold on that Houston defense that ranked in the bottom 10 in pts, yds, and pass yds...

Houston's two starting conerbacks (Fred Benett and Jacque Reeves) have a combined 4 career ints!!

The Titans have a much more dominating defense over the questioned Texans's...

As for Schaub's high yds and tds... look at the games when houston was behind... He was 5-7 when he started last year....Say what you want about Young's #s , but doesn't need to do much. The most important aspect for a QB is leadership and wins, and Young gives you both.

As for a DL scoring a TD, it's just 1.. You see it every year.

The two teams head to head in '07

Tennessee won both meetings.

A dominating run game to go along with a high pressured and run stopping team will finish higher than the air it out offense with holes on d.

Good TD

Colts.

David, local papers in Nashville report Chris Johnson (first pick RB) is running plays from the flanker position. Add Lavelle Hawkins. Boom. We will not be last.

July 22, 2008  07:08 PM ET

Why on earth would the Titans need WR's? It's not like they have a QB who could get them the ball, anyhow. ;-)

July 22, 2008  07:10 PM ET

I agree about the WR issue. The management ignores it like the WRs they have will magically sprout suction-cups for hands and suddenly start running routes like blue-chips. I think VY would get a lot less heat if they had 1 good WR or a really good TE, but it still hasn't happened. Houston has better core players on the offense and has spent a year as a team. Barring injuries, I think that even Houston will edge out Tennessee.

July 22, 2008  07:12 PM ET

Can Alge really be dominant this year? It's been a while since that star shined. We will see. He's a big target still, but he needs to be in top form to be effective in the AFC south.

July 22, 2008  07:16 PM ET

The Titans still need a QB...

July 22, 2008  07:21 PM ET

the titans do not need a QB

July 22, 2008  07:33 PM ET

VY doesn't need to be an expert passer when he can run the ball like he can. Just like most homerun hitters in baseball aren't the best at stealing bases. Who needs to be able to steal bases when you round them all at ONCE.

And the Titans do not run the West Coast offense that is so "sexy" to so many fair weather fans. You can bet that first and second down are pretty much going to be run plays for them, and pass on third down unless VY sees an open lane, then it's off to the races. So... VY's passer rating is NEVER going to be great, and he's never going to put up numbers like Manning or Brady in the Tennessee offense. Get schooled.

July 22, 2008  07:37 PM ET

Throwing more INT's than TD's in BOTH seasons is the problem of the QB, not the Receivers. The Titans need a QB. What makes you so sure that Vince Young is the only QB to keep the Titans going?

July 22, 2008  07:43 PM ET

-- Well if you can't throw, then your team is one dimensional already to start out the game. Then the opposing defensive coordinator is going to know this and shut down the run. When the run is shut down you will need to resort to the pass which is not good for the Titans at the moment. So then that offense is not going to move very much. To be honest if Vince Young was doing about the same as Kerry Collins then there is a problem with your starter. The QB needs to be able to throw the ball well enough to guide his team.

July 22, 2008  08:32 PM ET

He threw for more than 300 yards against DENVER last year, and everybody STILL hammered him. So, no, the Titans are not one-dimensional at all. They are not the PATRIOTS, mind you, but... hey, THEY are one-dimensional, too, then because THEY don't have a RUNNING game.

And the Titans RAN for 300 yards against Jacksonville last year.

AND they made the playoffs.

What more do you want? They had just as much a shot at being in the Super Bowl as anyone else did. Especially CLEVELAND. Hoo Rah.

July 22, 2008  08:35 PM ET

I meant MORE of a chance than Cleveland. Yeah - the Titans sucked so bad last year they MADE THE **** PLAYOFFS! How does that happen? And Vince Young is not doing "about the same" as Kerry Collins. Collins can't avoid sacks like VY, so that alone puts him ahead of Collins.

What are you people smoking? You are obviously ignorant of the AFC South. Live it. Learn it. Love it.

July 22, 2008  08:42 PM ET

And whoever said Houston would "edge out" Tennessee.... HA Not with Ahman Green and Chris "Mr. Fumble-itis" Brown at RB. And they lost Mathis. And Johnson is hurt. And Schaub is no better than Grossman right now. I don't see it happening. They will beat a lot of folks this year, yes. They will surprise some folks, yes. And maybe they'll even split the 2 games they play Tennessee - but I don't see their defense being better than ours at all, and I don't think they have played SERIOUS football for 16 games. I think they will tire out at about week 12 and go kaput.

ANd Houston does NOT have a better "core" of players. Puh-lease.

VY, Crumpler, Scaife, White, Gage, Hall, Mawae, Stewart, ROOOOOooooos.... Vanden Bosch, Haynesworth, Kearse, Finnegan, Harper, Thornton, Bulluck, Hope, Griffin...

Get real. Pay attention please. Take the Patriot/Colt-colored BLINDERS off of your damn face and pay the **** attention.

July 22, 2008  09:23 PM ET

And the Titans went 4-2 in the AFC South last year and the MIGHT JAGUARS went 2-4. Titans also went 3-1 in non-division, and the MIGHTY JAGS went 2-2.

Pay attention. Take some notes. Don't be a dumb ****.

July 22, 2008  09:25 PM ET

Ooops. I meant the MIGHTY CHARGERS went 2-2 in non-division games.

Which means their OWN division is WEAK, and if they were in the AFC South getting beat up for six games a year, they would never survive. We'd be seeing LT having a nervous-crybaby breakdown because the Titans D STUFFED HIS PATHETIC WHINEY ****.
