Are the Saints now a lock for the playoffs?

Yes, they are.

The addition of Jeremy Shockey was what did it for me. I would say they were making the playoffs anyways, but with Shockey, they are definitely winning at least a WC.

They have a All-Pro QB, 2 very good RB's that compliment each other, and a good O-Line.

On the Defensive side, they have a very nice LB Corp with the addition of Vilma, and their D-Line is solid also.

Shockey will be a perfect threat on their Offense seeing as they run mostly a west-coast offense with a lot of slants, hooks, curls, and other routes that are perfect for a head-banging TE like Shockey.

He will provide Brees with a good big target over the middle which will compliment his targets out of the backfield along with Marques Colston.

Almost nobody is a lock.

Everybody expected the Saint to make it last year and what happened? They lost their first 4 games, Deuce got hurt, Reggie got hurt, and they couldn't quite recover.

That alone proves why there are no locks in the NFL- too many unpredictable variables.

What if it's Brees who goes down this year? Or Will Smith? Or what if it's not injury, but some other unexpected development?

Calling a 7-9 team a lock is too much.

You say it's because of Shockey? You mean the loudmouth hothead coming off of an injury? The guy who creates clubhouse and chemistry problems? Yeah...that's just what I'm looking for if I'm a team on the edge of playoff contention.

He's a good TE, and he'll probably be a good contributor, but I don't see him being the final piece of anyone's puzzle.

The passing game was the LEAST of the Saints' problems last year. Brees had the most attempts in the history of the NFL. They should be worrying about the running game and defense.

The Saints ranked 26TH in total D last year. 26TH! Their scoring D was 25TH! You can't win giving up points like that. They need to PROVE that the D is A LOT better before I crown them.

They made moves to improve the D this year

They added Jonathan Vilma- 43 tackles, 1 int in only 7 games!

If he would have stayed healthy, he would have been in the pro-bowl. That's a good 1st seven games, if he could have kept that up then he could have been in the Pro-Bowl.

The Saints also added Randall Gay, he had 37 tackles, 1 FF, 3 INT's last season!

That should help a team ranked 25th in scoring D, and 26th in overall D.

They also added Sedrick Ellis who some consider to be the 2nd best DT in the draft! He should come and contribute right away also.

Lets just look at their division though:

Falcons- they have NO shot at making the playoffs

Panthers- They need strong QB play to make it to the playoffs this year, and Delhomme has only played 3 full seasons since 98! The chances of him staying healthy are not on their side

Buccaneers- They are the only other team in that division who will challenge the Saints I think.

Overall, in the NFC, a 8-8 record, or 9-7 will get you into the playoffs!

They also have the 28th toughest schedule in the NFL! They only have to win 8, 9 games MAX to get in! They will beat AZ, HOU, MIA, SAN FRAN, OAK, ATL (at least once), CAR, DET..

There's no doubt the Saints improved the D. But like I said...26th out of 32 teams means that they need to implement some major changes. The fact is, you can add personnel but until you get them out on the field, you don't know for sure what they can do.

And be careful about counting on Ellis. Rookies need time to adjust to the speed and complexity of the NFL. I'm sure he'll be a good player, but it's not reasonable to think he'll be an impact guy immediately.

In the South, the Bucs and Panthers are both contenders. If Carolina can stay healthy they have some of the best weapons in the NFC.

You said: "They only have to win 8, 9 games MAX to get in! "

Really?

Last year, the worst NFC playoff team was 9-7. I don't think 8 wins is going to get you in. And you ignore the fact that other teams have improved as well.

The Vikings are expected to be significantly better. The Eagles will likely have McNabb back. Even the Cards were 8-8 last year and have a ton of young talent. There's going to be a lot of competition for the Wild Card.

So many teams competing for so few spots means that declaring a "lock" is almost impossible.

You said there is gonna be a lot of competition for the WC, but I don't think the Saints will have to get the Wild Card. They will win their division. There is no other team in that division that has the strength to win that division over the Saints.

Last year, the Saints opponents were 115-141(.449). They are better than 28th in the league!

They will win their division at 9-7 in my opinion.

The Panthers had some big losses this off-season and I think they are "putting all their eggs in Jake's basket" to be honest because they will have absolutely no shot if his elbow doesn't return to form.

The Saints however, only lost Charles Grant, and Joe Horn.

In my mind, the Saints can compete for the division RIGHT NOW. They have a solid backfield with McAlister, and versatile Bush, a QB who knows how to win, a solid O-line, and even w/o Horn, their WR corp is talented.

They did have a glaring hole at CB, but with the addition of Randall Gay, I think they solved that problem. The addition of Vilma also added some much needed LB depth, and versatility. The addition of Kaesviharn and Simmons from the Bengals will help their DB's and LB's respectively.

So not only do you have them as a "lock" for the playoffs, but you also have them as division champs?

Bold.

But they finished 2 games behind the Bucs last year TIED with Carolina.

Let's focus on that for a minute- The Panthers and Saints BOTH finished at 7-9...except the Panthers did it without a real QB!

Do you realize that Carolina had the 29th ranked offense last year and STILL managed 7 wins? Imagine what they can do if they stay healthy. They have the deepest group of receivers in the division and a balanced overall offense.

Plus, Peppers barely showed up last year. Trust me, this team has a lot of potential for improvement.

And don't forget Tampa. Their offense may be average, but that #2 defense keeps them in every game.

You simply can't assume that the Saints will run roughshod over these two on their way to a division title. Sure, they CAN do it, but whether or not they WILL depends on a lot of things going right for them.

The bottom line is that you're guaranteeing a playoff spot for a team with a LOSING record and MAJOR holes to fill. Yes, they have the ability to get there, but they have a lot to prove before they can be deemed a sure thing

You are way off the mark here. Vilma was nowhere close to the Pro Bowl. In fact, he was playing like crap, that's why he was benched for David Harris. Vilma was a terrible fit in the 3-4 Defense Mangini brough to the Jets.

A much more sound argument would be that Vilma is a Pro Bowl talent who will be going back to the 4-3 scheme in which he won Defensive Player of the Year, made the Pro Bowl and led the NFL in tackles.

July 23, 2008  09:17 AM ET

Vote right - they improved their chances but no one is a lock. All teams are 1 play away from a backup QB and the end of any playoff hopes.

July 23, 2008  09:43 AM ET

Good-Man. You really did a good job here. The problem tho is the whole "playoff lock" issue. You made the title, and I didn't see enough to make it true. Vote to Porkins.

July 23, 2008  10:05 AM ET

Vote to Porkins for the better arguments

July 23, 2008  10:05 AM ET

the reference to Vilma just proves Porky's point...the Saints have been sigining injury prone players for YEARS, because nobody else wants those players....the Saints are the landfill of the NFL...voting right

There is no such thing as a lock for the playoffs. Not even for the Pats, Colts, or Cowboys. What if Brees gets hurt? What if Duece shows signs of aging? What about their defense? They are a playoff contender for sure, but there is no such thing as a lock until it is statistically clinched.

July 23, 2008  10:25 AM ET

Shockey is a negative, not a positive.

And Vilma's stats prove (1) he didn't play a full season; (2) he's about average.

1-Bucs are defending champs till somebody beats them

2-The Panthers will be in hunt as long as Delhomme is playing, he seems to be ready by all reports

July 23, 2008  10:28 AM ET

Love the acquisition of Shocky though, 1 more threat for Brees to chuck the pig to..........

July 23, 2008  10:46 AM ET

ONE PLAYER does not make a team a LOCK for the playoffs. When they drafted Reggie Bush, they thought he was the Second Coming and that they would win the Super Bowl for the next 10 years. What. Ever.

Somebody made the comment in the T&R section that the Saints will be wanting their team chemistry back by Week 3 or 4. I totally agree. Shockey will destroy the inner workings of the organization and the locker room chemistry because he is a "ME" player.

July 23, 2008  10:51 AM ET

NFC South is the hardest division to predict, the best team in the division changes every year it seems

July 23, 2008  12:57 PM ET

Saints fan here and I think they will make the playoffs but to a call it a lock is too much, Vote right
