Restricted FA Josh Smith

Joe Johnson - 22 points, 4.5 boards, 6 assist every game

Smith, 17.2ppg, 8.2rpg, 3.4apg, 2.8bpg, 1.5spg, 45.7%, 71%, 25% on 3's,

Johnson, 21.7, 5.8apg, 4.5rpg, 1.0spg, 0.2bpg, 43.2%, 83.4%, 38% on 3's

Johnson has a slightly advanced offensive game but Smith is jut learning to stroke the 3-ball.......Once he gets a little better at that he will be a more complete player.......

Defensively, he is head and shoulders above Johnson who is just okay and needs to improve that part of his game......

You find swingman everywhere you look in todays NBA but PF's like Smith who play with passion on offensive and defensive end are harder to come by........

Again once he becomes a lot more proficient hitting the 3 he will be a dominant PF.........

Slightly better?

Johnson hits way more free throws then Smith. Twelve percent is the difference between making the game winning free throw and missing the free throw which loses the Hawks the game

Again Johnson makes more threes then Smith and that twelve percent is a big deal. Smith makes four of every twenty three pointers while Johnson makes about eight of every twenty. Right now Johnson is a more complete offensive player then Smith which is all that matters

Six assist a game for a shooting guard is great considering the league average is three and shooting guards dont get much more then that

Johnsons defense isnt all that bad. Its not as good as Smiths but he did hold Allen under his average during the playoffs and is tough to get past

Also in the playoffs hes a better player. He scored more then Smith and made a few more clutch shots so hes the better player

Johnson handles the ball a lot more than YOU would want a PF to.......

You wanna do playoff stats, sure, lets go there........

Smith, 15.7ppg, 6.4rpg, 2.9apg, 2.9bpg, 1.7spg, 39.8%, 84.1%, 16.7%

Johnson, 20.0ppg, 4.0apg, 3.9rpg, 0.3spg, 0.0vpg, 40.9%, 90.9%, 44.4%

Keep in mind Smith was defending and being defended by a future HOF'er.......KG is a beast and Smith had to perform in his first playoff series against a great player........

Johnson shot just a little better than Smith despite being a veteran playoff performer........

Smith is the player most fans would want to build a team around, not a 6-7 SG........

Smith is small for the power forward position being only 6'9, he doesnt have the size to be a dominate big man in this league and gets overpowered by bigger guys like KG

By only averaging 16 points in the playoffs it shows that Smith isnt a great scorer against other big men. On the other hand theres 6'7 Johnson who has the quickness to beat defenders off the dribble and be able to hit open shots

Yes Smith was playing against KG but Johnson was playing against another future hall of famer in Ray Allen so theres not to big of a difference there

Smith shots mostly within the paint since hes a power forward so its a shame that hes not shooting higher then Johnson who shoots a lot from midrange and behind the arc

The Hawks are built around Johnson which is the reason why he got signed to a long term deal

Savage is just scared of you DJ

July 23, 2008  09:00 PM ET

I give the edge to Smith because he is improving, plays better defense than just about anybody, and can play either the 3 or 4 very well

July 23, 2008  09:31 PM ET

So Smith is saying because Smith averages bpg he isnt good.........

LOL

July 23, 2008  10:24 PM ET

It's Joe Johnson, but I will wait on the arguments.

July 23, 2008  11:39 PM ET

July 23, 2008  11:46 PM ET

July 23, 2008  11:51 PM ET

July 24, 2008  12:06 AM ET

July 24, 2008  12:07 AM ET

No.. Zaza Pachulia.

July 24, 2008  06:39 AM ET

Allen doesnt play much defense, unlike KG........

July 24, 2008  06:41 AM ET

Peach

Most of the people that have voted thus far are people like AngryCorgi who vote against me regardless of my argument

July 24, 2008  06:48 AM ET

Slight Edge to Smith over Johnson. (but good arguments both sides)
Defense is harder to statistically measure, but Smith is a better all-around defender than Johnson. Defensive skills are also more rare than offensive skills.

July 24, 2008  11:23 AM ET

You had some nice arguments Ny

But Peachy, AngryCogi and others automatically vote AGAINST me every chance they get

July 24, 2008  01:25 PM ET

"Slightly better?"

Yes Ny...slightly better. The only real advantage Johnson has over Smith was the point factor. Nothing else. Josh Smith was the BEST player on the Hawks. His defensive ability brought his game to a different level.

Vote to dj

July 24, 2008  03:36 PM ET

Smith

July 24, 2008  03:37 PM ET

I feel like I should vote left to make up for the people hating on DJ,

but Johnson was the man in the Celtics series...

Smith is going to be a good player (not quite there yet...still need to shed that "potential" tag), but Johnson is the leader of the Hawks.
