Arod will be the MVP again this season if the Yankees can make it to the playoffs.

So far this season Arod's stats look like this

In 81 games
.318 batting avg
61 RBI
21 homeruns
60 runs
20 doubles
.594 slugging %
15 steals while being caught just once
.398 OBP
.990 OPS
41 extra base hits
Drew 37 walks, 7 intentional
Grounded into only 4 double plays
Struck out 62 times
.966 fielding %

What do A-Rod's stats right now have to with "if the Yankees make the playoffs"?

Right now, the MVP favorites in the AL have to be Ian Kinsler and Josh Hamilton. Kinsler is tearing up the league while Hamilton's production is off the charts.

I guess what you're implying is that in order for a guy to be MVP, his team has to make the playoffs.

1. That's not always true- as recently as 2003, the MVP came from a team that didn't get to the post-season.

2. Assuming they do get there, how do you know what A-Rod will do in the second half? he might not have anything to do with why the Yanks make the playoffs. He may get hurt. His numbers may tail off.

3. For all you know, the Rangers could make a run and get into the post-season, making it even more likely that one of their guys gets the award.

I don't think A-Rod is the frontrunner for the award right now. So why would he automatically get it if the Yanks make the post-season?

This isnt about whether the Yankees will make the playoffs or not. This TD is that IF the Yankees do make the playoffs then Arod will be the AL MVP.

Why do I say this?

After missing 20 games, his stats are amung the AL best.

1st in slugging %
2nd in OPS
4th in homeruns and batting average
7th in On Base %
10th in RBI
14th in steals and extra base hits
15th in total bases
19th in runs

To counter your arguments:

1) Its not always true but for the most part the MVP is on a playoff team. Thats why numbers alone right now Arod is questionable but with the affect Arod has on the success of the Yankees I believe Arod will be the MVP if they do make the playoffs. (I will state his affect in argument 3)

2) Its the same for any player in MLB. How do we know what Hamilton will do or Kinsler will do. They face the same injury or slump risk as does everybody in MLB. So injury is a moot point but Arod has a track record of great performance throughout the season.

3) The Yankees have a reasonable chance being 3 games out in wild card for 2nd place. The Rangers are 7.5 out for 6th place in the wild card and 10.5 games out in the AL West. If they do itll be close though

"This isnt about whether the Yankees will make the playoffs or not. "

Huh? Your title clearly says "If the Yankees make the playoffs..."

Seems like that's a pretty critical piece of the argument to me. But whatever.

A. A-Rod is not currently the favorite for MVP.
B. There is no way of knowing what he'll do the rest of the year.

Let me put it this way- here are multple scenarios that COULD happen:

1. The Yanks make the playoffs but A-Rod sustains a second-half injury and doesn't contribute.

NO AWARD.

2. The Yanks make the playoffs and A-Rod stays healthy BUT performs poorly.

NO AWARD.

3. The Yanks make the playoffs, A-Rod stays healthy, AND has good numbers BUT someone else on another playoff team out-performs him.

NO AWARD.

4. The Yanks make the playoffs, A-Rod says healthy and has good numbers, but someone on a non-playoff team puts up such a great year that voters have no choice but to pick him.

NO AWARD.

See- just off the top of my head I can think of multiple ways that A-Rod would be denied the MVP.

If you want to argue that he's the MVP SO FAR...you can try that, but there are several other guys ahead of him.

I am arguing up to this point because like you said anything can happen in the 2nd half. Arods numbers this year are dwarfs of last year so fans see Hamiltons break out years as being better but Arod is still having an MVP season.

Arods affect on Yanks success
Team record and (runs per game)

On DL- 8-12 (4.15)
Arod with 0 hits- 8-14 (3.09)
On DL or 0 hits- 16-26 (3.595)
Arod with at least 1 hit- 40-19 (5.47)
In the lineup- 48-33 (4.83)

When Arod gets at least 1 hit the Yankees offense flourishes as they score nearly 2 more runs per game. On the DL the Yankees had a losing record and with Arod in the lineup the Yankees are 15 games over .500

Hes also team leader in:
homeruns, Avg, runs, slugging, steals, OPS, XBH and total bases
and 2nd in OBP and RBI

In the Clutch- RHP/LHP:
RISP low at- .246/.276 but
Runner on 3rd- .500/.500
On 1st- .326/.357
1 out- .373/.333
2 out- .346/.200
1st inning .364/.133
Late innings- .391/.111

Trouble against LHP but RHP he gets it done

Arod is a significant part of the Yanks success and if they make the playoffs it will be largely thanks to him. This is why he would deserve the AL MVP if the Yanks make the playoffs

Calling A-Rod a "team leader" is like calling C.C. Sabathia anorexic.

He may have some of the best stats on the team, but any fan will tell you that the guy is allergic to responsibility and clubhouse chemistry.

But fine- he's doing well and helps them win. So what? Having the best stats on your team doesn't necessarily mean you deserve an MVP. There are 29 other guys who are tops on their teams. Do they all deserve awards too?

"if they make the playoffs it will be largely thanks to him."

That's the problem- you have NO WAY of knowing that. He may or may not be part of what helps them to the playoffs.

And as I mentioned in my 2nd argument, even IF they get there, there are many scenarios that would result in him NOT winning.

The MVP award takes the whole year into account. Since no one knows what he'll do in the 2nd half, there's no way to predict he'll deserve it.

You also haven't really addressed any of my arguments. He's not the favorite for the award now, so why assume he'll be the favorite in October?

-Kinsler
-Hamilton
-Morneau
-Quentin
-Sizemore
-Drew

All those guys are in the running.

And you didn't counter any of my scenarios.

DAMN IT!!!

I seriously can't get 1 TD lately...dear Lord...

July 23, 2008  09:36 PM ET

Pends on how HE does. If you wouldve set in stone what he wouldve done like 40 homeruns then I wouldve taken it and disagreed but who knows. Of course if he hits 50 he will win.

Nevermind, I know what I want to say but I'll let someone else take it.

July 24, 2008  11:02 AM ET

Porkins...when A-Rod won with a last place team, he had un-godly numbers. So I'm not sure if that works. I'd tend to disagree with you there.

But honestly, I don't think A-Rod is having the year he had last year. His performance with RISP is down significantly. He's missed time. I just don't think its his year.

Villify me for saying this, but I think JD Drew deserves consideration, as does Hamilton, Kinsler, and Morneau. Its really an open field in my opinion.
