Choose the team with the outfielders having the best 2008 season
The Pittsburgh Pirates have the best trio of outfielders in the MLB this year.
Yes, I said it, and before you start laughing uncontrollably at the thought of the Pirates having the best anything, hear me out
Nate McLouth - Perhaps the most surprising, and most improved player in the league, McClouth is hitting .280 with 20HR, 67RBI, 74Runs, 11SB and a .885OPS. He already has career highs in hits (111), doubles (34), homeruns, and RBIs
Jason Bay - Returning to all-star form, Bay is hitting .288 with 21HR, 59RBI, 67 Runs, and 6SB. He has a .894 OPS and is slugging at .533. His 21 home runs already matched last years total.
Bay and McClouth are the first Pirates teammates to have 20 homers before the 100th game of the season since Bill Robinson and Willie Stargell in 1979.
Xavier Nady- A man who only hit .300 once in his career is hitting .328. He also has 12 home runs, 56RBIs, 48 Runs, and an OPS near .800 in playing in only 87 games. He already has a career high in doubles.

I noticed that this is the 2nd one of these that you have done (http://www.fannation.com/throwdowns/show/198321) with the same pick the Pirates and 1st arguement...The other guy picked the Cards...
Well I won't copy so I will go with...
The Rockies
Matt Holliday LF .343 BA (3rd in MLB) 17 HR 60 RBI 115 Hits (11th in NL) .429 OBP (4th in NL) .582 SLG (6th in NL) 1.011 OPS (4th in NL)
Willy Taveras CF 42 Stolen Bases tops in MLB
Brad Hawpe RF .271 BA 16 HR 48 RBI .493 SLG .872 OPS

Holliday vs. Bay
Holliday has the better batting average, but Bay has more homeruns, about the same RBIs, more runs.
This is the only matchup to favor you though
Taveras vs. McLouth
In your attempt to point out something I already knew, it looks like you didn't have enough room to post Taveras' stats other than stolen bases so I will:
.244 AVG, 1HR, 19RBI, 45 Runs, .296OBP, .597OPS
I mean stolen bases are nice, but I'd be a little more worried about getting on base first. McLouth has a .353 OBP which is 57 points higher than your guys.
McLouth also has 19 more Hrs, 48 more RBIs, and 29 more runs. This matchup clearly goes to McLouth
Hawpe vs. Nady
Nady has a 57 point higher average, less home runs, but 8 more RBIs, a 36 point higher OPS, and 7 more runs
Hawpe is hitting .241 with RISP and only .143 with RISP and 2 outs.
Nady, on the other hand, is hitting .322 with RISP and .325 with RISP and 2 out.
Combined:
Rockies: .286 avg, 34HR, 127RBI, 146R, well you have Taveras, so you take SB, and .827OPS
Buccos:.298 avg, 53HR, 182RBI, 197R, 18SB, .896OPS
So it's not even close. Except for you taking stolen bases, the Buccos clearly have the better OF

Not only did you use the same picks for the 2 TD's you used the same 1st argument almost word for word...
Matt Holliday runner-up for the MVP last year. And is clearly the best player out of the 6 and agrueably one of the top 5 outfielders in MLB. He is the centrepiece of the Rockies team. He's on a tear right now and has hit 7 HR so far in July. Increasing his BA by 11 to .343, OBP by 14 to .429, SLG by 44 to .582 & OPS 58 points to 1.011 in the process.
Will Taveras already has a career best 42 SB this year in only 85 games. His previous best was 34.
Hawpe has hit 5 HR in July so far and has raised his BA 11 points to .271, SLG by almost 20 to .493.
Bay had a terrible start to the season hitting about .250 the first 30 or so games and is now on the trading block along with Nady. With both seeming about to be traded before the trade deadline ... how can you say that the Pirates have the best trio when by the end of next week or even the end of this TD that trio could be a duo or single? McLouth is a great young and cheap player.
Just what the Pirates like.

Refer to the comments below for the "word for word"explanation
"Matt Holliday runner-up for the MVP last year"
-Good for him, this TD was about this year. This year, he is the centerpiece, however, 1 player doesn't make up for a trio of OFs
Taveras does have stolen bases, but as shown above, he doesn't get on base enough to make it count. A double is just as good as a single/walk and a stolen base. McLouth is leading the national league with 34 doubles.
"Bay ... now on the trading block along with Nady. With both seeming about to be traded before the trade deadline..that trio could be a duo or single?"
-Really? That's all you got? Holliday's on the block too
In one sentence you knock Bay for having a bad start hitting .250, in the next sentence you praise Hawpe for raising a batting average up from .260
Bay is hitting .304 in July with 6HR and 18 RBI
Nady is hitting .386 in July and slg .614
McLouth has 6HR and 18 RBI in July and he's a leadoff hitter
So not only are my guys having the superior season, they are also having the superior july
Buccos take the individual matchups 2-1,all but the SB in comparing the units as a whole, & July
Buccos have the better trio

The Pirates have been a cheap yet unsuccessful imitation of the Twins, who haven't had a winning season in 16 yrs! How could they have the best anything! They do the same thing every year. Take the expensive assets & peddle them away for cheap young players in an attempt to rebuild. Well the problem is after 16 yrs they are still rebuilding. They will never be any good until they learn how to do it properly.
What do you look for on a team from your outfielders offensively ...
1. a lead off guy that steals bases - Taveras 42 SB
2. have an MVP calibre guy that drives in runs - Holliday
3. surround your MVP guy with other good players so he doesn't get pitched around - Hawpe
The problems with the Rockies this year have been Pitching, Injuries & Inconsistency. Not the Outfield which remains to be 1 of the best in baseball. Pirates will just continue to do what they have always done & that's trade away 1 or 2 of these players & wait until next year again. This trio won't be in Pittsburgh come the end of next week let alone the end of the season.
Holliday's not going anywhere. And he is having as good as a year as he had last year.

My second choice was the Detroit Tigers
Marcus Thames - Highest ABs per HR rate in the MLB
Magglio Ordonez, .300+, 50+ RBIs and 10+ HR - partly injured
Curtis Granderson - flirting with .300, 10+ home runs
Matt Joyce - second to all rookies with 10 home runs
Dawgee - U-M owns all | 07/24/08, 03:34 PM
Report Offensive Commenti'll get to this in a bit (as with yours Dawgee)....the reason this one was made was due to people saying it was a no contest one with just the national league, so this one opened it up to the entire MLB as well

and Dawgee accepted both before i could drop this one....so if you were so upset i had 2 going? why did you accept it and put an argument down before i could delete the NL one?

look, i explained above, but i guess people still aren't getting it.
I created the TD (http://www.fannation.com/throwdowns/show/198321) first and had it as only NL. Due to comments saying it was unfair and 7 different people accepting and then declining, I made this TD which now says "all MLB". As I did not want to waste the first argument i had already typed up, I copied and pasted it in this one, but made sure I changed it to all MLB. After this was created, I went back to delete my NL one, but Dawgee had already accepted it. When I went back to delete this one, I saw Foosball had already accepted this one so that I couldn't delete either.
Since this one clearly says all MLB, I figured foosball would argue an American League team and Dawgee would argue the NL team (as per the rule)....so that's why the first argument is about the same in both, and as you see, it shouldn't affect the way you vote since I couldn't delete once it was accepted

So I can't be accused of a homer when I am clearly showing they have the superior outfield in this TD
