Yeah its early and most rosters aren't even set but what the heck. I pick the Cowboys based on their solid roster so far. They've got an elite young quarterback in Romo, Terrel Owens is happy, Jason Witten is the best tight end out there, Marion Barber is a beast and the running game will only get better with Felix Jones and the defensed just got reinforced by all-pro Zach Thomas, yeah he's gettin old but look what Seau did. Their defense is one of the best. The only thing stopping them from the NFC Championship was a few "rookie" mistakes by Romo. I think as Romo gains experience, the Cowboys can only improve, barring some major injury, I think the Cowboys are definitely the favorite going into this season

OK, cool. I can take this one and not sound like a homer.

Everything you just said about the Cowboys is absolutely true. But you didn't mention any of the BAD things with the team.

1) Jerry Jones, never content to just win, let his ego override his roster and cut a deal with HBO films to do "hard knocks". An all access look at training camp. ALREADY having the distraction of having pacman...er....Adam Jones in camp, And ALREADY being the most scrutinized team this was just DUMB.

2) There is the unspoken but openly visible question of Wade Phillips job. Is he understanding enough to step aside at the end of the year no matter what? Because he's going to be asked to do just that..no matter what.

3) This team has HUGE problems depth wise at major positions. Romo plays with abandon...who comes in if he gets hurt for a game or five? Brad Johnson? Season over.

OK. Who wins the SB? Geez, the Pats are an easy pick. The Colts are always right there. Uh...I'll go with the Chargers. They are the "Cowboys" of the AFC. Strong in virtually every position on both sides of the ball and didn't lose anyone of great import in the off season.

Biggest difference is the distraction factor.

What team doesn't have problems? The Pats had spygate, the Colts folded under pressure (the o-line literally did that) and the Chargers have a less than perfect passing game.
Adam Jones is not a distraction as long as he behaves, but look at TO, somehow Jerry Jones made him content.
You proved my point when I said that the only way they don't win is with a major injury. Romo is #1 on that list.
Phillip Rivers still seems a little uncomfortable and since SD lost Michael Turner, if LT gets hurt, their goes the offense, who's gonna run the ball Jacob Hester?, I'm still doubtful about Chambers and i don't think Rivers can handle the entire load.
Yeah bringing cameras into training camp was the stupidest thing possible, but I don't think it will have as much an effect as you say it is.
The Chargers haven't really had much success come playoff time, so i think theyll fold again and keep failing until Rivers becomes a seasoned veteran

"I don't think it will have as much an effect as you say it is. "

You are much more confident than I am. Do you remember the last time "hard knocks" was filmed at a Cowboys camp? It was a complete zoo. Much more time spent mugging for the cameras than actual practicing. And the Cowboys proceeded to go 5-11 that year.

Now I'm not predicting that kind of collapse, but it will be an even bigger zoo this time around. HBO has been given full access with no restrictions. Are we going to see Romo working with a position coach on one side being asked questions about Jessicas role in the Eagles loss by someone on the other side? Will T.O., Tank Johnson, and Adam Jones be able to get past the cameras long enough to stretch? Phillips is already criticized for running a soft camp...camp cupcake they called it...this just makes it worse.

San Diego is a very similar team to the Cowboys. Strong across the board with multiple play makers on both sides of the ball. They are in the second year of Norv Turners offense which perfectly compliments the stengths of their skill position players. Like the Cowboys they are poised to take the next step, only they don't have the distractions to deal with.

Forfeited Turn

Well then. I guess there isn't much more to argue here.

The Cowboys and Chargers are remarkably similar teams. Eerily similar, in fact.

Both are supremely talented teams with a number of play makers and very good role players.

Both run the Phillips 3-4 defense installed by Wade Phillips on both teams.

Both run the Zampese offense taught to Norv Turner by Ernie Zampese and taught to Jason Garret by Turner.

Both head coaches were once a fantastic coordinator for the other team.

Both head coaches were up for the HC job on the other team.

Shawne Merriman claims the Cowboys told him they were going to draft him in the first round, except they instead chose Demarcus Ware leaving Merriman to the Chargers with the next pick.

Vegas has the odds for each of the teams winning the Super Bowl at 7-2 (same as the Pats and Colts)

What I'm getting at is if you hold the Cowboys up to a mirror, you'll get the Chargers reflection with few differences.

While the Cowboys may hold an edge in overall talent, it's a very slight edge and not enough to conclusively put them over the top. That just leaves intangibles when choosing between these teams.

Final Edge: Chargers by a nose hair.

Hey guys, I'm new to fannation.

July 25, 2008  03:02 AM ET

"Romo is 0-5 in the playoffs."

Wow. He is? How does one go 0-5 in 2 games, exactly?

July 25, 2008  03:06 AM ET

"Wow. He is? How does one go 0-5 in 2 games, exactly?"

When you count college, which some people do, like when they say Philip Rivers has never had a losing season (and that goes back to high school)

July 25, 2008  03:11 AM ET

Damn Romo gets credit for 5 losses in just two playoff games that is impressive

July 25, 2008  03:11 AM ET

He

July 25, 2008  03:12 AM ET

He must suck bad to do that. I guess by that thinking Jim Kelly is actually 0-10 in Super Bowls

July 25, 2008  03:18 AM ET

"He must suck bad to do that. I guess by that thinking Jim Kelly is actually 0-10 in Super Bowls"

****. Fannations had a story on this, don't you remember?

If you're going for sarcasm you fail terribly. It really just makes you look stupid

"When you count college"

Give me a freakin' break. He was in Div 2. And an undrafted free agent, at that. I'm pretty sure you know absolutely nothing about his college or their competition beyond the 0-3 crap you spew.

Now, just for the hell of it, let's dispute the NONSENSE that he LOST those two playoff games.

In the Seattle game, the flubbed snap never should have happened. See, the play before was CLEARLY a first down pass to Jason Witten. NOBODY disputes this, but since it wasn't reviewed... Bad ruling by the ref resulted in 4th down.

Now, on to the snap...it wasn't snapped to him, it was snapped to his right. The K-ball was extremely slick and he mishandled it while trying to put it down. SHOCK. Not to mention that he had NO BUSINESS handling kicks in the first place. Blame Parcells for that one. He had too much respect for Bledsoe to sent HIM out there to do the job typically held by the backup QB.

July 25, 2008  03:34 AM ET

And the Giants game? Pfft. Romo threw -at least- three passes that would have won that game but his teammate(s) let him down by not catching them/not finishing their route.

July 25, 2008  03:35 AM ET

Blaming Romo for either loss is to know NOTHING about football.

July 25, 2008  03:41 AM ET

"Give me a freakin' break. He was in Div 2. And an undrafted free agent, at that. I'm pretty sure you know absolutely nothing about his college or their competition beyond the 0-3 crap you spew."

He was a Div I-AA (hey get your facts right eh? LOL) playing against equally "talented" Div 1-AA opponents. What can't I say? Equal level of competion, and apparently Romo was quite a good QB at Eastern Illinois.

If people could rag on Peyton Manning for never winning the big one (before he did), and use his career at Tennessee as an example (where he never beat Florida), why can't people say Romo has terrible postseason success and ALSO reference his postseason record there?

July 25, 2008  03:44 AM ET

"And the Giants game? Pfft. Romo threw -at least- three passes that would have won that game but his teammate(s) let him down by not catching them/not finishing their route."

Yet over the ENTIRE course of the game Romo played terrible, completing ONLY half his passes

July 25, 2008  03:44 AM ET

Oh, Parcells retired from coaching because he realized he was far too loyal to vets. What other coach in NFL HISTORY would have put his STARTING QB out there to hold for a kick in that situation? Making Romo hold was both a nod to the Veteran Bledsoe and a way to tell the kid "you ain't done nothing yet". It was beyond absurd and I guarantee that for the rest of his life Big Bill will regret putting Romo in that situation to begin with, no matter how well or not so well Tony's career turns out.

"Yet over the ENTIRE course of the game Romo played terrible, completing ONLY half his passes"

Yeah, that happens when you have a thumb injury on your throwing hand and your best receiver is playing with a high ankle sprain. Geez.

July 25, 2008  03:49 AM ET

"and apparently Romo was quite a good QB at Eastern Illinois."

I'm pretty sure he wasn't good enough to get drafted, right?

"If people could rag on Peyton Manning for never winning the big one (before he did), and use his career at Tennessee as an example (where he never beat Florida), why can't people say Romo has terrible postseason success and ALSO reference his postseason record there?"

I guess people can "rag on" whatever they want but I'm pretty sure there is a significant difference between the NUMBER ONE PICK IN THE DRAFT and an undrafted free agent.

July 25, 2008  04:01 AM ET

"Yet over the ENTIRE course of the game Romo played terrible, completing ONLY half his passes"

I also forgot to mention that THREE of those passes were dropped. Romo's fault? And that On the most critical play he receiver cut the route short on what would have been a game winning TD.

See, it's you FOOLS who just look at box scores that are completely clueless. The Romo bobbled snap never should have happened as EVERYONE agrees the play before was a 1st down. And Romo actually threw THREE passes in the Giants game that SHOULD have been TD's only to get screwed by his receivers. To Blame Romo for that is beyond absurd.

HA! Love your stats

For those who don't know, the play before in the Seattle game was initially ruled a first down. The booth reviewed and for some UNKONWN reason changed the spot of the ball. Replays clearly show the original spot was correct. But all anyone remembers from that game was the bothched snap.
