Pick one player who is the face of each franchise. He represents them, not always best player on the team, but a fan favorite, and usually veteran. Roster as of now, regardless of trade rumors.

AL East
Tampa Bay: Scott Kazmir
Boston: Manny Ramirez (but for how long?)
New York: Derek Jeter
Toronto: Roy Halladay
Baltimore: Brian Roberts

AL Central
Chicago: Carlos Quentin
Minnesota: Joe Mauer
Detroit: Magglio Ordonez
Kansas City: Zack Greinke
Cleveland: Grady Sizemore

AL West:
Los Angelos: Vladimer Guerrero
Texas: Josh Hamilton (Close, Micheal Young was very very close)
Oakland: Justin Duchscherer
Seattle: Ichiro

NL East:
Philadelphia: Chase Utley
New York: Johan Santana
Florida: Dan Uggla
Atlanta: Chipper Jones
Washington: Ryan Zimmerman

NL Central:
Chicago: Carlos Zambrano
Milwaukee: Prince Fielder
St. Louis: Albert Pujols
Cinncinati: Edison Volquez
Houston: Lance Berkman
Pittsburgh: Jason Bay (Yet again, for how long?)

AL West
Arizona: Brandon Webb
Los Angelos: Russell Martin
Colorado: Matt Holiday
San Francisco: Tim Lincecum
San Diego: Jake Peavy

Some of these are no-brainers, but there are plenty to argue. Good Luck to whoever!

AL East
Tampa- Kaz with Pena close #2
Boston- Manny
NY- Jeter
Toronto- Halladay
Baltimore- Markakis- thought of by many to be a great 5 tool player and a future OF stud. Most O's fans I know are in love with the guy.

AL Central
Chi town- Jim Thome- I think the argument is between 3 players, Dye, Konerko, and Thome. Its Quentin's first year with the team and to the average fan, hes still a nobody. I guarantee more people think of Thome when the Sox are in discussion than Quentin

Detroit-Maggs
KC- Alex Gordon- people are so high on the guy as being a future all star 3rd baseman. Much more thought of and fan favorite than Greinke.
Cleveland- Grady

AL West
Angels- VLaddy
texas- Hamilton
A's- Eric Chavez- how is JD the face of the A's? Most average fans dont even know the guy.
Seattle- Ich

NL East
Philly- Big Ry Howard- best explanation, KG is Howard, Pierce and Allen are Rollins and Utley. Obviously KG and Howard are the biggest.
NY- Johan
FL- HANLEY RAMIREZ!
Atl- Larry Jones
Wash- Zimmerman

Central
agree with all except
Cin- Ken Griffey JR by FAR

West
agree with all except
Colorado- Todd Helton- Mr. Rockie anyone?

Ok you kind of contradicted yourself... First you say, "Most O's fans I know are in love with the guy." to prove your point of picking Markakis.

Then " Its Quentin's first year with the team and to the average fan, hes still a nobody. I guarantee more people think of Thome when the Sox are in discussion than Quentin"

So you said for Markakis that O's fans know him and love him, but I think the average fan does not. Then you said the average fan doesn't know Quentin, so most fans would pick Thome.

You took two different view points, and contradicted yourself by saying that one player is picked because one certain major league team's fans know him, and another should not because only one certain major league team's fans know him.

The reason I chose Carlos Quentin is because the homerun is probably the most popular and overrated stat in baseball. But since it is overrated, many fans look at the homerun leaders, therefore seeing Carlos Quentin leading the AL in homeruns. So that earns him a lot of points.

Brian Roberts was the only Oriole in the All-Star game, and before you say "that doesn't count, someone had to represent", why wasn't Markakis picked?

Lol, you argued 2 teams?

Very few average fans know Quentin. Very few average fans know what team he plays for.

Roberts didnt make the all star game, Sherrill did.

Hanley is considered one of the best players in the game. Mostly everyone knows his name and he has become one of the most popular SS's in the game. When I think of FLorida I think of Hanley and so do most people. Hes Florida's face and Uggla isnt even close.

Duchscherer? Seriously? I still cant even spell his name. I guarantee if you asked everyone who claims to be a baseball fan less than 5% know this guy. The majority of them know Chavez from his prime and still remember him as the Oakland face.

Ken Griffey... the HOFer.. or Edinson Volquez. The 1/2 year pitcher.

Point me.

Grienke is a very underrated player... but thats what he is, UNDERRATED! No one thinks of him as a great pitcher or the face. They think of their #1 draft pick and ultimatley their future Alex Gordon.

Helton is the only HOFer the Rocks have. If anyone thinks Holliday is the face they are too quick to jumo the gun.

I win FL, CIN, COL, PHI, OAK, KC

we tie CHW
you win BAL

Darn, I wanted this... Lets see what you guys got

July 31, 2008  02:26 AM ET

Good Luck EFB, I wanted to throwdown with a seasoned veteran, to see how well I am doing so far. I'm going for my first win over a 100+ winner!

July 31, 2008  02:36 AM ET

Thank you and good luck to you as well. Good picks.

July 31, 2008  02:37 AM ET

Some of my picks might seem weird but like you pointed out the franchise player is not always (and I have found to rarely be) the best player.

July 31, 2008  02:50 AM ET

Tampa= Carl Crawford hands down
BSox= Big Papi
Deffinatly Helton for the Rocks.

July 31, 2008  02:52 AM ET

W-O-W

I seriously cant believe I overlooked Crawford. I dont know how I forgot him.

July 31, 2008  03:14 AM ET

Im goin to bed. I hate to leave up just a list but i have good arguments for putting them all there. The face of the franchise IMO is defined as who the majority of sports fans know best on the team. Remember, that includes avid fans such as us, I'll watch a game if its on fans, and I sorta know some people fans. Basically, the majority of sports fans is retarded. The minority is us the avid fans but the all star votes show year in and out we are a slim minority. The majority of fans dont know who Justin Duch is but id say nearly all of them know Chavez. Same can be said with many of the picks. Ken Griffey is there from playing more than a half a year with the team and being one of the greatest and most well known hitters of all time.

July 31, 2008  03:16 AM ET

An example of an average fan, my best friend is a red sox fan and his entire family lives in Boston. He constantly tries to tell me Pedroia is the best 2nd baseman in the league. He also thinks Beckett is one of the greatest pitchers ever. He watches baseball, just doesnt follow it. He has no idea who most good players are.

July 31, 2008  03:20 AM ET

I might say Smoltz for Atlanta even though he's injured. I like right's list better based on the criteria.

July 31, 2008  03:23 AM ET

For me the Face of the Franchise is the person that comes to your mind first when you think of a team. More often than not I don't think it is going to be a pitcher because when it's a starter you are only going to see them every fifth day. If it is a reliever you may see them almost everyday but for no longer than an inning or two which means if your not watching the whole game your probably not going to see them. There are exceptions like the Blue Jays where they just don't have a superstar in the lineup so your first thought is Roy Halliday. This again is just my opinion.

July 31, 2008  03:25 AM ET

Smoltz would be a good call for Atlanta. I think Chipper though is a better fit though cause barring injury he is someoe that is going to be seen everyday. Where as with Smoltz every fifth day if he is the starter or only one inning at a time if he is the closer.

July 31, 2008  03:26 AM ET

Then for me personally I also think there are teams with no faces. Like the Royals, Giants and Dodgers.

July 31, 2008  04:55 AM ET

I think K-Rod is the face of the Angels

July 31, 2008  05:36 AM ET

Carlos Quentin the face of the franchise? Uh, no. But it's not Thome, either.

Try...Mark Buehrle.

July 31, 2008  05:43 AM ET

Quentin is the pleasant surprise and Thome is the 3-year hired gun who will be gone after this year. Buehrle is the 30th round draft choice, home grown, fun loving, tarp diving guy who took a HUGE hometown contact to re-up long term last year. After MB...Dye, Crede, Konerko, and even Pierzynski would all rank higher than either of the guys you two chose.

July 31, 2008  05:47 AM ET

that's huge hometown DISCOUNT contract. His numbers were very similar to fellow lefty Barry Zito yet he signed for little more than half Zito's deal in both years and dollars. MB is a HERO in ChiSoxville.

July 31, 2008  05:53 AM ET

"More often than not I don't think it is going to be a pitcher because when it's a starter you are only going to see them every fifth day."

Doesn't matter. The "face of the franchise" is whoever the fans most identify with that team. Nolan Ryan was the "face of the franchise" most everywhere he pitched. Ditto Roger Clemens (with the Red Sox, Astros, and Blue Jays for sure.) and Greg Maddux (with the Cubs and Braves)

July 31, 2008  07:32 AM ET

I'm surprised nobody said David Wright or Jose Reyes for the Mets.

July 31, 2008  07:58 AM ET

Baltimores face is Adam Jones

July 31, 2008  08:29 AM ET

I think the O's currently is Roberts, but the future face is definately Jones
