Pete Carrol is a terrible "small game" coach.

He's an awesome recruiter, and except for the Texas title game debacle, is an excellent "big game" coach. But why do his incredibly talented teams keep getting embarrassed in games they should win easily? And why do they need comebacks to survive quite often against "inferior" competition?

He cannot get his athletes to believe they are vulnerable to these "lesser" opponents, which is nearly essential if you want to win a title.

I am sorry my friend, you are mistaken by far!

Small game- Week 1- 52-7 THEY EMBARRASSED USC!

Do I really need to go over every single 'small game' that USC has played? Almost every Pac-10 game is "small" . It's not like USC didn't play against Oregon state, the Beavers just straight up beat them.

A coach like Pete Carroll does not make the big bucks on only 'big games'. What about when Leinart was there, was every game a big game? NO, they went undefeated, and I would say 1/3 of those games were big games.

If you are implying that Carroll is not a good coach, I will TD you every day of the week, and twice on Sunday! You are far off about that.

"But why do these incredibly talented teams get embarrassed..."

USC got embarrassed? They lost by 6 points! I got news for you, even in '06 when the Beavers beat USC, it was close!

Get with college football, my noobie friend

On September 25, 2008, Oregon State freshman Jacquizz Rodgers ran for 186 yards and two touchdowns. OSU 27 - USC 21

The 2007 Trojans were the presumptive #1 pick before the season. However they lost two games, including a major upset to 41-point underdog Stanford.

The 2006 Trojans' first setback proved to be a 31???33 loss to unranked Oregon State, in which the Beavers were able to repeatedly capitalize on several Trojan turnovers. After defeating both Notre Dame and Cal, the Trojans were considered to be a virtual lock for the National Championship Game against Ohio State. However, USC was shocked in the final game of the season, losing to crosstown rival UCLA 13???9. This eliminated the Trojans from championship contention.

In 2003 Cal posted an 8-6 record, highlighted by a dramatic 34-31 triple-overtime victory over No. 3 ranked and eventual national co-champion USC.

I didn't even list the games where they fell way behind and had massive comebacks.

Wow, this is tougher than I thought! You really are struggling!

After going 7-6 in his first year, he has run off six consecutive seasons with two or fewer losses for a combined record of 69-8 (.896). Adding that first year on only brings him down to 76-14 (.844), still an outstanding mark.

What coach in ALL OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL has a better win % than that? NOBODY

All of the following is under Carroll prior to this year:

Home record: 39-3
Away record: 32-9
Bowls: 5-2. tell me how many of those were nat'l championships!

And you are far off on the 'small game' concept:

Check this out.

Carroll against teams that have a Win % of .499 and below-- a whopping 33-2

Not a small coach guy? AVG points allowed with those same teams--42 scored, and 12 allowed

That's a fantastic number. He is one of the best coaches in NCAAF...period!

You can't debate that!

Your last argument would be a good one if I said he was a bad coach. I didn't. Just that his teams perform down to their competition way to often for it to be a statistical anomaly.

In fact, you didn't really respond to my argument at all. Winning percentage against teams below .500 is really your only attempt?

USC at the moment has 40 players that scouts say will get drafted by the NFL.

And your response is that he has only lost 14 games since taking over?

I guess if I lose, I lose. But your (non)argument barely even glosses over the throwdown topic.

<b>"USC at the moment has 40 players that scouts say will get drafted by the NFL."</b>

I highly doubt that! HIGHLY! If so, please show me a list of that

<b>"Just that his teams perform down to their competition way to often for it to be a statistical anomaly."</b>

How is that even allowed to be entered on this site? He has lost 2 games to those weaker teams. How in God's name could they be performing down to their competition level?

What exactly do you consider 'weak'? I say .499 and below. Maybe you disagree. I highly doubt that anyone would say a team that is 7-3 is weak! How can that even be a comparison?

<b>"And your response is that he has only lost 14 games since taking over?</b>

What exactly is wrong with this response? He has lost 14 games! Not all of the games he has won were against top tier teams.

"<b> Pete Carrol is a terrible "small game" coach."</b>

How is the above information not pertaining to the TD topic? You said he is a 'terrible' small game coach! You are dead wrong my friend! He has lost 2 games to teams that have a WP less than .500.

Pete Carroll is one of the all around best college coaches!

Pete Carrol should be coaching in the NFL - I doubt he would want to coach for the Raiders but I believe he would make a great NFL HC.

one loss doesnt take that away.

You guys know he failed in the NFL already, right?

^^Yes, he should go again in my opinion

pete carroll is NOT a NFL coach! He needs to stay at USC where it has made him respectable again. He's recruited the hell out of the US getting whoever he wants...imagine him in oakland..."hey al can you spend some money on Free Agents??" Vote right, since Carroll may have lost some games but that dont mean he cant coach "small games".

Can i ask what website u compied that from??? I love the 31????33 loss, and the UCLA 13???9.

Vote right. How can someone expect a team to never lose even to mediocre teams? Look at the NFL, no one in their right mind expected Denver to lose to KC, does that mean that Shanahan can't handle the small games.....Nope.

Pete Carroll's NFL record is above .500. He reached the NFL Postseason twice. He was not a failure as a Head Coach he just needed experience - remember the Jets and Patriots started off strong under Carroll.

Just a little FYI, Pete Carroll has already been an NFL head coach and was mediocre at best. His record is as follows, 33-31 in the regular season and 1-2 in the post-season.

September 29, 2008  10:17 PM ET

Notice the steady decline of the teams he coached in the NFL

National Football League
Year Team Record Playoffs Other Notes
1994 New York Jets 6???10 0???0 Lost final 6 games; Carroll was fired
1997 New England Patriots 10???6 1???1 Division champions
1998 New England Patriots 9???7 0???1
1999 New England Patriots 8???8 0???0 Carroll was fired

That wasn't my point at all. I did not give him credit for what the Patriots have become - The other Bill should be mentioned as well.

That is pretty much what I said. (see Quote #11).

Pete Carroll's record is not nearly as bad as other Head Coaches in the NFL today. And Pete still had 2 good seasons. Another point is that he has improved.

A winning record by two games is mediocre, sorry to burst your bubble. I'm sure by your standards .500 is more than expectable. But, to be successful in the NFL you have to do much better. Coaches that are .600 get fired all the time. And just because you and what appears to be a WAC team from your picture are afraid to play Elite Teams like the ones in the SEC is no reason to be a childish little girl. If that is what you have to resort to I???m sure Sesame Street has a football website.
