Why would the Raiders draft Darren McFadden, when they didn't address their offensive line this offseason, which lead the league in sacks given up?
El Pollo Loco said 05/03, 11:56 AM
The Raiders offensive (and they were) line gave up a league high 72 sacks, which was nine more than the Lions gave up with 63 (They too didn't address the offensive line). Both teams quarterbacks will spend a lot of time in the horizontal position, because of their off season moves this season. They signed Lamont Jordan, and Dominic Rhodes, and drafted Michael Bush. They were middle of the road with 3.9 YPC. How does McFadden make their team better if they draft him #1 overall in '08?
Andrew Perloff said 05/03, 12:16 PM
Raiders still feeling burned by the Gallery pick. And Al Davis will be into McFadden's star power.
El Pollo Loco said 05/03, 12:31 PM
Adrian Peterson was supposed to be a gimme pick for being drafted # 1 after his freshman campaign, and he went #7. Even without his injury problems, do you think he would have went #1, or top 5? No way. Who was the last running back that went number 1 overall? Even LT didn't go #1 and went #5. Reggie Bush wasn't even taken #1, and he went so high because of the multiple threats that he imposed. Raiders have bigger needs, and RBs have lost they luster in the draft the last few years.

This is in response to a '08 mock draft done by Mr. Perloff.

I think from a totally logical perspective Chad wins. But I think everyone is tempted to take the sexy pic in McFadden and we all know the Raiders are one of those handful of teams that can never be expected to make the logical, sensible pick. I don't know of any real superstar OL right now, so for now I'll go with McFadden although it seems like they should go OL. sorry Chad, I know you sided with me in my throwdown.

Yeah, but here's another thing. The last team to have back-to-back #1's was the Browns, and they were an expansion team. The Raiders coaching situation was a fiasco, and they had coordinators who they literally pulled off the streets. There is no way they pick #1 again, and there is no way McFadden goes #1, unless the Browns have the worst record and Cowboys use that pick on McFadden. Also, name the last time a consensus #1 pick for the following draft (year in advance) held that position for the whole year. Leinart didn't, Quinn and Johnson didn't.

In response to your question of who was the last running back drafted #1 overall it was Ki-Jana Carter by the Cincinatti Bengals in 1995.

It was rhetorical, and meant to drive in a point that it's been over a decade. They only give you 500 characters to drive in a point, dude. I was at 497 when I finished.

I don't care that they felt burned on the Gallery pick. Historically, OL are the safest bets in the first round. There is only a handful of first rounders in the last decade that don't start or are no longer in the NFL. They have too much money invested in the RB position, and using another "#1 pick" on a RB would break the bank at that position. The Raiders won't be picking first next year, because they aren't working with a jerry-rigged coaching staff like last year. Let's not forget this team had one of the NFL's better defenses last year, despite being the worst team in the league.
