Never NDing Struggle said 07/02, 11:44 AM
I'm tired of hearing all of this stuff about college players should be payed. Not only are they getting a free education, but playing ball in college is like an internship for the next level. I honestly think them getting payed would be horrible. The one thing that seperates pro sports from college sports is money. Players play harder because they have A LOT more to prove. If you start paying players in College you'll lose a lot of the things that make college games so great!
How 'bout 'em said 07/02, 12:01 PM
Many normal interns get paid anyways, so that is a horrible analogy.
Believe it or not, college players do get paid...indirectly.
What do you call free tuition, room, and board? If you're from out of state, that can get over $100,000 for four years (maybe 5). Most college players don't even make it to the NFL anyways, so they're getting a free ride for playing a sport.
I don't think they should get paychecks, but they should get something for making sooooo much $ for the NCAA and their team.
Never NDing Struggle said 07/02, 12:12 PM
If you noticed in my opening arguement I said "they're getting free education." Players aren't talking about loans for college, they're talking about a paycheck. Which is exactly what I'm talking about. You pretty much just proved my point and reiterated exactly what I said. I don't think they should get something for making money for the college. They're getting a free education and those that make money for the college will be making big bucks @ the next level.
How 'bout 'em said 07/02, 12:28 PM
I didn't have enough room to argue my last point. I don't think that they should get paychecks, but they should get something extra besides an ipod or a mountain bike for getting their team to the Rose Bowl. Giving the students something extra would not ruin the sport b/c they would still be driven to make the real money in the big leagues and make the best of their time in college.Plus, jersey sales are something that should be shared b/c a person buys a jersey specifically for that player.
Never NDing Struggle said 07/02, 12:51 PM
I just think college is fine the way it is. Having somebody come from NOWHERE and getting a free ride in college just because they're good at a sport IMO, is good enough. If you are the type of player that sells jersey's like that, you'll be the player that makes big cash @ the next level. They're basically paying you $250,000 in college to make 3 times as much or more in the pros.
How 'bout 'em said 07/02, 01:06 PM
Considering how much money is made in advertising, merchandising, and the bowl games, simply paying for one's school is not enough. They should get more;maybe they shouldn't be on salary, but they should get a bigger piece of that green pie.Like I said before, most players don't become pros. Most NCAA athletes have to deal with school and athletics. So, they don't get to focus completely on becoming a doctor or teacher like most other students. They have nothing to show for their efforts after college.

WWWD10 i agree, you get a free education which could also lead to higher paying jobs for players that dont go pro. And at some schools that $25-35,000, which is almost entry level at many work places.

This is tough. The arguments are about equal and I am on the fence about this topic. But I support paying athletes because that would give rich football programs like ND an advantage.

I don't know about paid a salary, but part of me wishes that they would allowed sponsors considering the amount of money that flows into the university from the sports programs.

this is a good TD, but a big issue here is should all college athletes get paid? or just the athletes that bring in money for their schools (basketball and football). rowing, softball, rugby, etc dont bring much money (if any) in for their universities

I think money could be given on a sport to sport basis. For the general logo or shirts that say "University of _____", you would have to split it up to the entire athletic department, but you could give directly for shirts that say "University of ______ football". Any advertising on TV could be given directly to that sport also.

I know UGA's campus bookstore is right next to the football stadium, so anything bought during football season could be attributed more towards football.

Did you guys even read the arguments?
Like NFL players don't get handed everything on a platter anyways? Your gripe should be with the values of this country, not the product of our hobbies. We value entertainment, so the entertainers get all of the money.
I don't think they should be paid necessarily, but they do need to get a piece of the pie tho, somehow.

nothing to show for their efforts after college? Honestly, that sounds like a personal problem. If you're not going to make it to the NFL, maybe you shouldn't be playing football. Instead you should be focusing on school. Plenty of athletes do both. They shouldn't be paid, period!

They're getting a FREE EDUCATION!!!!! Something that millions in this country can't afford!!!!! Why? Just because they can play a sport? They shouldn't get squat! They get a free education, something that so many people would give an arm to have, but instead here people are trying to justify that they should get more! Makes NO sense to me!

A personal problem? I was a complete student in college, no athletics of extracirricular activities, organized ones at least. So don't act like I'm some bitter athlete.
How about love of the game wwwd10? Have we become so compeditive as fans that we forget that it's just a game sometimes and can still be fun to just play?
I AM NOT SAYING THAT THEY SHOULD BE PAID!!!! They should get something more than they do get b/c of the loads and loads of money they make the NCAA and their schools.

Rodger, when you stop paying to see them play, then you can talk about making them accountable (i'm talking about college and professional sports athletes). They're just as accountable as a Paris Hilton or Brad Pitt, but we enable their ability to not be accountable by giving them our money.

Rodge, you also act like they don't work out and play hard when it comes to it. They earn their strength and speed. Have we forgotten that it is not easy to run a 4.4 40 or elude a well-trained defender? They earn things.

Sorry to keep commenting, but you may see a free education as sufficient wwwd. I don't see it like that b/c the money they make yearly grossly outweighs the free tuition, room and board given to the student-athletes.

And then the millions the good players make afterwards don't get returned to the university. Seems to me if the university paid the players, then the university should get a cut of future income.
