The best Madden cover man HAS to be Ray Lewis. He is the only defensive player EVER selected to be on the cover thus far. He has been the leader of the Baltimore defense pretty much since he entered the league. He has racked up 1,399 tackles, 80.5 tackles for a loss, 28 sacks, 8 FF, 23 INTs, and a defensive TD in 11 years. He has been an eight time Pro Bowl selection and was selected as defensive player of the year in both 2000 and 2003. He has led the NFL in tackles five times (1997, 1999, 2001, 2003, and 2004) and in 2003 tied an NFL record for INTs for a linebacker with six. None of the other cover boys even come close to Ray Lewis. Culpepper has had two good seasons, Eddie George was decent throughout his career, but not even close to the level of Lewis; Vick has NEVER been consistent, Vince Young will probably be like Vick in his consistency especially since the Titans practically told him he is the offense. Donovan McNabb has been pretty good during his career, but has been injured alot as of late, but he just hasn't been the kind of guy for his team. He is currently on the hot seat in Philly, which could mean the end for him especially with that injury history.

Your right all the cover players you mentioned there are not on the same level as Lewis but you forgot one that is. Marshall Faulk. The Madden 2003 cover player. Faulk was a part of the "Greatest Show on Turf". Even with only 4 16 game seasons for Faulk he still managed to have 2,836 carries; 12,279 rushing yards; 4.3 y.p.c average; 100 rushing TDs; 767 receptions; 6,875 yards; 36 TDs. Marshall also went to 7 pro-bowls(1994-1995; 1998-2002). He was also on 6 All-Pro teams, 6 of them by consensus(1994-1995;1998-2001). He is in the top 15 in rushing yards all-time. He is also in the top 10 in rushing TDs. He is number 57 all-time in total points at 830. Top 5 in total TDs with 136. He is also number 6 all-time for combined net yards with 19,190. Marshall Faulk is the best multi-dimensional runningbacks of the last decade and many can argue all-time.

You can't use Ray Lewis supporting cast against him without mentioning the fact that Marshall Faulk, during his best years with the
Rams, had two Hall of Fame receivers (Torry Holt and Isaac Bruce) along with what looked to be a Hall of Fame QB (Kurt Warner). Ray Lewis has played with countless stars (Ed Reed, Adalius Thomas, Cris McAlister, etc), but they haven't made him better. Think about the beginning of his career in Baltimore (1996): he was, to my knowledge, really the only big playmaker or playmaker for that matter on that Ravens defense. They gained playmakers over that four year period to COMPLEMENT the amazing middle linebacker they had drafted in 1996. His tenacity, intimidation factor, and spirit on the field are unmatched by any player and that definitely includes Marshall Faulk. Faulk also lost his job and never crossed 1,000 yards after his cover appearance. Ray Lewis may not be at the top of his game anymore, but he most definitely is still a productive player as shown by his choice as a Pro Bowler last year.

Where did i use Lewis's supporting cast against him? Everyone at a time in their career loses his job. Rice lost his job does that hurt his career and how people felt about how good he is? Faulk may not have the physco intensity and spirit on the field as Lewis but you have no idea how Faulk acted in the huddle and the locker room. You say Faulk never crossed the 1,000 yards after his cover appearance but he did in 2003(209 rushes; 818 rushing yards; 45 rec.; 290 rec. yards) and 2004(195 rushes; 774 rushing yards; 50 rec.; 310 recieving yards). The reason i add the 2003 season is because the Madden game is released before that year's season. Marshall Faulk also holds the record for yards from scrimmage in a single season. This was done in the 1999 season when he had 1,381 rushing yards and 1,048 receiving yards for a total of 2,429 yards. Marshall Faulk from 1998-2001 had more then 2,000 yards from scrimmage.
Big Ben68 said 07/04, 02:06 PM
I never said you used that, but I hit it before you did. Rice never really lost his job anywhere he played. San Fran: #1, Oakland: #1; with the Broncos and 'Hawks he was signed more as a guy that could be a slot or 4th WR not the #1 or #2 guy. Faulk was a great guy, but you never saw him getting his teammates riled up or psyched for a game the way Lewis does it. He never again crossed 1,000 rushing yards, which is the milestone for every running back during the season. Rushing for 1,000 yards is like the barometer of an NFL running back. If he can???t hit that thousand yard mark he is seen as a less than stellar back and means he needs to stop. That was shown with the drafting and eventual installation of Stephen Jackson. His statistical accomplishments are great, but will he be a first ballot Hall of Famer? I think not. Maybe on his second try, but Ray Lewis is most definitely in the HOF on his first attempt. But what REALLY makes him the best Madden Cover Athlete is because he is the ONLY defensive player to have been selected to the cover thus far. The only other guy that have a real shot are Champ Bailey and a few other scattered stars. Ray Lewis is the greatest Madden Cover.
MTC Ryan Leaf!! said 07/04, 05:47 PM
There is a reason Lewis is the only defensive player and why they chose him to be on the 2005 Madden cover. That Madden was revealing the hit stick for defense and why not have one of the most viscious hitters on the cover. It isnt that he is the best but it was advertising. He may not have rushed for 1,000 yards after being on the cover but he had more then 1,000 all purpose yards which shows he was still effective. Faulk was the best multi-dimensional runningback. He was a threat running and catching the ball. With all those weapons on offense it is impressive how he still ran and caught 1,000 yards having the most yards from scrimmage in a season in 1999. Everytime he touched the ball he was a threat to score.

I still can't believe they put Vince Young on it this year. He had a terrible statline last year and his team only ended up 8-8. It definitely should have been LT or someone else

If it was LT, I probably would have picked him or even Manning.

Yeah, this year's cover should have been either LT, Manning, Brady, Brees, or maybe give some love to another def. player, like Urlacher or Ed Reed. (not that this has anything to do with your throwdown)

fungus, only 8-8? How did they do the year before? I'd say 8-8 is a marked improvement. It also probably saved Jeff Fisher's career in TN. Sure, Lewis is an awesome LB, but Faulk dominated, especially in his years with the Rams.

Hey I'm not saying they didn't improve, or that Young didn't do good things, I'm just saying Madden lowered their standards a little.

But he has retired after 14 years. Lewis still has ATLEAST three more years possibly a few more and can probably go OVER 1,800 tackles. He is currently at 1,399; one more tackle and he has 1,400 and if he averages 100 tackles a year (like he has) then he will definitely be over 1,800 tackles. He ALSO is the ONLY defensive player EVER selected to be on the Madden cover, which is also part of this throwdown.

Barry Sanders was never officially on the cover. This throwdown starts at Daunte Culpepper and continues through Eddie George, Marshall Faulk, Michael Vick, Ray Lewis, Shaun Alexander, Vince Young, and Dovovan McNabb.

This throwdown only goes from Madden 2000 to Madden 2008. Garrison Hearst, Barry Sanders, and Dorsey Levens are not options for an argument.

the reason why faulk is retired is he is an rb they usually retire early because of the beating they take all their career
