When it comes to backups no one compares to Michael Turner of the San Diego Chargers. He is a top back in the NFL, and unfortunately he won???t see the top of the depth chart because he has on of the greats of all time in front of him. He got quite a pit of press this offseason, but no one would give the Chargers enough to get rid of him.

Here is a look at his stats.
157 Carries
941 Yards
5 TD
6.0 Yards per Carry

And last season he had
80 Carries
502 Yards
2 TD
6.3 Yards Per Carry

Compare that with Larry Johnson of the Chiefs
416 Carries
1789 Yards
17 TD
4.3 Per carry

I show you this b/c at Turner's rate had he gotten 416 carries his stats would read
416 Carries
2620 Yards
10 TD
Not too shabby.

By the 2008 season Turner will be a starting RB in the NFL. And if he keeps this up he will be a good one at that.

Jones- Drew is no back up. I???m sorry but he is part of a 2 RB formation. In that case you could argue Reggie Bush, Marion Barber or Tatum Bell. All players that were a part of a 2 RB team.

Come on, 231 carries for Fred Taylor to 166 for Jones-Drew. Teams that ran with a starter and a back up look like this
LT- 348 Attempts
Jamal Lewis- 314 Attempts
Rudi Johnson- 341 Attempts
Larry Johnson- 416 attempts

I could go on, but my point here is that your boy is no back up. I can not argue Reggie Wayne, or another #2 WR, so do not try to pass this off.

And to add to everything the most important stat to a RB should be yards per carry. And with that Turner???s 6.3 has your boy beat. Had Turner been given the ball 166 times he would have racked up 1485 yards. The only thing that is even here is that YPC. You can not expect to get as many carries behind one of the greatest RBs of all time.

You are comparing Apples to Oranges.

Turner had
4 games with 10 or more carries
Only 80 attempts on the entire season
6.3 yards per carry
3 Receptions on the season for 47 Yards (an average of 15.7 yards a catch)
964 Return yards


Jones Drew
7 Games with 10 or more carries
2 with 20 or more carries
5.7 yards per carry
46 Receptions
Average of 9.5 yards a catch.

My point is that had Turner had the opportunity he could put up those numbers. You are saying that he has been in more games, SO WHAT! 2nd string QB???s hold kicks does that count as games in a career? Don???t think so.


Bottom line the only way to compare these to is to go to the averages.
