Joe Montana is the greatest QB of all time.

Joe M. isn't the greatest b/c of his 4th Q comebacks....or b/c of his amazing passing stats...or b/c of his unbelieveable championship games...or b/c of his leadership... He is the greatest b/c whereas other QB's may have more passing yards (Marino) or more 4th Q comebacks (Elway)...nobody has the combination of all the above like Montana. He made everyone around him better.

Excuse me! Tom Brady, Brett Favre, and Peyton Manning top my list of greatest QBs all time (still active). But Marino and Elway should be anyone's lists, but Montana isn't the greatest. He was always good because of the West Coast Offense being new and innovative. Bill Walsh had just introduced its incredible effectiveness in the late seventies and through the eighties. The system made the QB in Montana's case until he went to the Chiefs, but he wasn't all that great there; he was solid, but not spectacular compared to his years with the Niners. I know I???ll probably have every 49ers fan after me now, but so be it. Joe Montana is not the greatest all time, but he???s up there.

Joe was at the END of his career with the Chiefs...but he still managed to get to the playoffs. When was the last time Farve made it to the playoffs?
Brady doesn't have the stats of Montana..nowhere close.
Manning doesn't have the reputation for coming thru in the clutch. (1 Super Bowl victory does not the greatest QB make)
You cant say the system makes the QB in the NFL. College, maybe.
Should we give Elway's credit to Shannahan? Marino's credit to Shula?
No 1 QB has all Montana's credits.

My turn again? Was that it? Here we go, Brady has three rings and his known as the reincarnation of Joe Montana, but he plays in a better offense. Brett Favre was in the playoffs back in 2004, when he lost to the Falcons in the Wild Card (the Falcons went on to lose the NFC Championship to the Eagles, who lost to the Pats). Manning is currently on pace to absolutely shatter just about every passing record in the NFL (one Super Bowl a happy QB it makes). And the system did make the QB, seeing as Montana had his best years in San Fran, no matter his age. Favre still plays at a high level even though he???s 38 (he will be at the start of the season). Elway was in Denver BEFORE Shanahan came to Denver so, he was successful before the system arrived (it???s the d*mn running system that you can plug anybody in). Marino though was partially due to the system and partially due to his immense abilities.

Montana:
4 super bowls...3 MVP's (no INT's) [sorry brady]
1st to win AP MVP in consec. years
In high school he turned an 0-9 team into 8-1.
At ND, led team from 22 pts down ag. Texas in Cotton Bowl.
He led the Chiefs to the AFC title game in 93 & made the pro bowl.
In 94 he and the Cheifs beat Elway & Steve Young.
[so much for the system]

Montana is in the top 5 of every major reg season passing category.

Montana OWNS every major POST season passing category.

In 1999, The Sporting News ranked Montana # 3 among the 100 Greatest Football Players of All Time, and ranked him # 2 of the 50 Greatest Quarterbacks in 2004. In August 2006 Sports Illustrated rated him # 1 on its list of the Top 10 Clutch Quarterbacks of All Time.

Okay, he has four rings and Consecutive MVPS. Brady has three, and Favre had three MVPs in a row (the last coming 1997 when he shared it with Barry Sanders). High School? High School means nothing in the NFL. At Notre Dame...who cares what he did? Okay, but he didn't get to the Super Bowl and he had a pretty good team around him in '93 and in 1994 the Niners won the Super Bowl that year...with Steve Young at the helm (yeah, the system won Steve Young another ring, yeah, so much for that system). Sorry, Joe Montana is number 8 in Career Completions and number 9 in career passing yardage; and he???s eight in career touchdown passes. Three of the most important passing stats, he???s only in the top ten, not the top five. Yeah, that was in 1999, Brady wasn???t in the NFL yet, Peyton was a year into the league, and Favre was two years removed from the Super Bowl; all of them were young (especially Brady). Who was he ranked behind? Again it was in ???99 and the final thing on there is #1 among Clutch QBs, yeah before Brady.

Sorry BigBen, you cant possibly come up with anybody else that could counter Joe Montana. But gobama, this was a lame throwdown, you had to know you couldnt be beat, pick a topic that could at least be argued.

Hold up, give me a chance to at least make an argument. Man you guys jump the gun way too fast.

Report Offensive Comment

hey hear him out it's a good argument! Personally i think steve young was a better qb. Young had the same intangibles and was a better athlete with a much stronger arm!

Throwdown Warriors "The Spartans of Sport"

Report Offensive Comment

Young was the 9'ers best QB ever.

Report Offensive Comment

1. Tom Brady
2. Joe Montana
3. Peyton Manning
4. Dan Marino

Report Offensive Comment

1. John Elway
2. Joe Monatana
3. Dan Marino
4. Bret Farve (Because of his story, drafted in the 2nd Round 33rd overall, the guy announcing him being drafted didn't even know his name he was so unknown. Great miracle story, and great QB for him to over come all of that.)

Report Offensive Comment

Marino never had Jerry Rice.

Report Offensive Comment

Montana never had Terrel Davis.
Montana never had a defense like the Patriots.
Montana's OL was never as good as Marino's OL.

Report Offensive Comment

Bradshaw wouldn't have been as good on a team w/o Franco Harris....his 2 stud receives Swann & Stallworth...and, of course, one of the greatest defenses of all time.

BRADY is good...but he aints great. He is a solid QB on a GREAT team. Montana was the greatest QB. And he still had success when he went to the Chiefs at the END of his career. He led them to the AFC champ game. (he also beat Elway and Young during the season when the Cheifs played the 49ers and Broncos)

Report Offensive Comment

hey bama how can you say that? The Niners were one of the greatest teams in history at that time. thier one of the top ten all time sports dynasties. Those niner teams did not have very many weaknesses. to say that the patriots are a "GREAT team" and the Montana led niners werent is just ludicrous!

Report Offensive Comment

what about jerrey rice... he's the best football player of all time... and he was on montana's team... idk just throwing that out there

Report Offensive Comment

I thought we covered that?

Report Offensive Comment

You put Marino on any team with a RB and a decent D, he'd be the gold-standard.

Frankly, Young was as good, if not better than Joe.

Report Offensive Comment

Big Ben is right, Montana might have been good when he was playing but right now there are some good (if not better) QB's out there

Report Offensive Comment

Big Ben, you are playing with FIRE!

how can anyone actually agree with the ridiculous notion that there is anyone that is greater than Montana....I cant believe you guys call yourselves sports fans! While you guys are desecrating our beloved forum, why dont you also enlighten us on who is the best receiver of all time? Chad Johnson? Gimme a break!!

Joe Mo is the greatest QB of all time, all the experts agree, including this one.

Report Offensive Comment

Hm, did you read the one I challnenged the other guy on? Obviously not. How am I playing with fire? You only prefer Montana because you were born and raised a Niners fan. You live the Niners just as I live the Redskins. I could easily say that I feel Joe Theisman is the greatest QB ever, but that would be biased on the account that I'm a huge Redskins fan (and the fact that it's not true). Montana is not the greatest QB of all time. No way in h*ll is he the greatest. He is one of the top ten, but not #1. Believe what you wish...as I will...

Report Offensive Comment

No no no!! Big Ben, your breakin my heart! Its not because Im a niner fan...its because he is the FN GREATEST! Look at the rings, look at the history, look at the results...team of the 80s....You could think that Joe Theisman is the greatest, but you and I and the rest of the known sports world know that is not the Truth.

If its an even field, I pick Montana over Brady, Manning, or anyone to lead my troops. He wasnt the biggest, strongest or any of that, he was just the greatest

Report Offensive Comment

Then I would take Brett Favre. He has the smarts, the arm, the ring, the experience, and the ability even though he's 38. Favre is the greatest QB of all time in terms of everything. The Niners always had a great Defense during their Super Bowl runs of the eighties; Favre still puts up pretty good numbers even with his weak Defense and inexperienced youth that is gathered about him. Please, this could go on forever.

Report Offensive Comment

Favre has an incredible greatness factor, but he has only won the big game once! ....man,.....enough of this,...I challenge thee to a throwdown on this subject!!
