Which is better for a rookie QB: sit him for a FULL year, or throw him into the fire mid season or at the beginning? (FN FFL Tourney Rd 2)

It'd be too easy for me otherwise, so I'm only going to argue about 1st-round picks. There isn't a great amount of evidence for an argument to sit a 1st-round QB for a full year. But the evidence that is there is pretty good. Of the drafts from 2001-2006, four QBs didn't start a single game. Two of them are among the best QBs in the league: Philip Rivers and Carson Palmer. Each of them had at least one full year watching their mentor play (Drew Brees and Jon Kitna, respectively), and completed 60% of their passes once they took over as a starter. The other 1st-round picks from those two years, Eli Manning, Ben Roethlisberger, JP Losman, Byron Leftwich, Kyle Boller, and Rex Grossman haven't fared nearly so well. Each of them started during their rookie season.
The jury is still out on the other two 1st-rounders who didn't play during their rookie season. Jason Campbell and Aaron Rodgers haven't yet had a chance to prove themselves, although Campbell looked pretty good in his late-season starts this past year.

Character and brains are needed for a rookie to overcome any obstacles in their first year as the man under center. Usually, first round picks have both. VY steps in and lead THE TITANS FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE!!!!!! to play off contention. Matt Leinhart, albeit with warner's tutalage, did very well considering Larry's injury. Ben Roethlisberger (forgive my spelling throughout) wins all of his starts and takes them deep into january.

The great thing is, you spelled Roethlisberger right.

You've given me three first-rounders who have had the "brains and character" to succeed as a first-year starter, and I'll add Jay Cutler as a fourth, though they fell out of a playoff berth after he took over the starting job.

Here are some names for you: Ryan Leaf, Akili Smith, Kyle Boller, David Carr, Patrick Ramsey, and Joey Harrington, none of whom are starting anymore, plus Eli Manning (55.4 QB rating, 6/9 TD/INT, 48.2% completion), Michael Vick (62.7, 2/3, and 44.2%)and Alex Smith (40.8, 1/11, 50.9%), who had terrible rookie seasons and have yet to live up to the expectations of a first-rounder. Throw in Byron Leftwich, whose rookie season was average and whose latest season was also average, and that's 10 names to your four. All ten saw significant starting time during their rookie years, and all ten are disappointments thus far (though Smith still has hope, and Carr and Harrington are in situations that may give them another chance).

i was about to get to those, but ran out of space.
Leaf- never should have been drafted to begin with
Carr- never had time to react to anything in the pocket
Harrington- had weapons with all the recievers drafted, but needed a line, and couldn't handle starting right away (i'll give you him).
Eli- a cry-baby who wins with his supporting cast, and did well without toomer.
Vick- proves to be a moron, and prefers running
Smith- to early to tell, judge him after this year, Davis will be healthy

My point is, how can you say "usually, first round picks have both [character and brains]" with so many examples to the contrary? And at least some of these guys may have had vastly different careers if they'd gotten a full year to develop behind a veteran.

everyone who said this would be a classic left, and since no ones viewing this, i have no reason to submit an arguement. by the way, i'm still foggy on what you meant by this. if you wish to elaborate, send me a fanmail.

good topic

I have a feeling I am going to like this TD

July 6, 2007  11:47 AM ET

i think throwing them in towards the end or middle of their first season is pretty good. They're gonna fail at first (unless they're VY), so get it out of the way at first. But I don't support throwing them in there the first game or anything.

July 6, 2007  12:08 PM ET

There is alot of compelling evidence out there to support both ways of thinking. I think it's a crap shoot either way. Some QB's need to get in there & start mixing it up while others need awhile watching & learning ... sometimes more than just a year. I'll vote "throw 'em in there" for this time simply because of my man, Vince Young.
Dan TM ... Big Ben has faired very nicely. Do you happen to remember a Super Bowl win in his second year??

July 6, 2007  12:08 PM ET

"he other 1st-round picks from those two years, Eli Manning, Ben Roethlisberger, JP Losman, Byron Leftwich, Kyle Boller, and Rex Grossman haven't fared nearly so well."

While I would tend to agree with that statement, I believe that Ben Roethlisberger has won a Super Bowl and Rex Grossman has been to one. Neither of those things is true for Philip Rivers or Carson Palmer. Just a little tidbit to point out.

In off-topic news, hook'em_10 is from Trinidad, CO, the sex-change capital of the United States (I'm from Fort Morgan, CO, myself). Just FYI, in case you really wanted to know.

July 6, 2007  12:12 PM ET

I think it depends on the situation. I think you should always start a veteran at least the first couple of games. If you're team starts falling behind in the playoff race, why not put in the rookie? It may be a spark to your team (see VY) or it may just help him gain experience for next year.

Classic throwdown in the making right here.

July 6, 2007  12:22 PM ET

Who needs a throwdown? The votes are already coming in without an argument!

July 6, 2007  12:33 PM ET

I can't vote on this. Manning started right away and Palmer held the clip board his first year. They both are great QBs playing right now. Its all about the maturity of the player. John Elway started right away while Favre was sat his first year and was traded.

July 6, 2007  12:35 PM ET

Yeah, good call, jim.

Dan, I'll give you Eli, Leftwich and Losman, but don't bring Ben into this if you want to make a valid argument. Fact is, he destroys your theory, and I'm surprised you would have bothered to bring him up.

Roethlisberger came in his rookie year, completed 66 percent of his passes, and won 15 straight games - or simply put, he was the best rookie QB in league history by FAR. Not quite sure how you could put Phillip Rivers' first season starting even close to that category. Nothing against Rivers, but you're blind if you think he had a more successful first season than Roethlisberger did, and Rivers watched and learned for two YEARS, Ben watched for six quarters.

July 6, 2007  01:06 PM ET

you know, I really wish they'd lock the voting until both members have argued.

July 6, 2007  01:08 PM ET

Roethlisberger did win 15 games in year 1 and won a super bowl year 2, however that running game and the defense is what got them those wins. Grossman has shown that he can be very good and very bad, depending on if he has plans later that day (see Packers game). However his team got to the super bowl because of a great defense and solid run game. I don't have any numbers but I believe the Bengals finished 8-8 during Palmer's first year on the field. They started slow (winning just 1 of the first 5 games) but ended up winning most of the second half of the season. If Palmer had started at the end of the previous season and gotten some experience would the Bengals have made the playoffs that year? Hard topic to debate....

July 6, 2007  01:11 PM ET

It all on the player and situation type

July 6, 2007  02:08 PM ET

i'd say if the season is lost have them play half the game either start them at the begining or after half time

July 6, 2007  02:18 PM ET

Oh, believe me, if I could argue anything I wanted to on this topic, I'd say "rookie QBs should only start if nothing's on the line for the team, to give them game speed experience." But I was assigned this topic for a tournament, so I had to pick one argument or the other.

Roethlisberger's 98.1 QB rating his rookie season (beating Marino's rookie record of 96) was not helped at all by his team's defense. Either way, he is the standard by which a fantastic rookie quarterback is measured. It's ridiculous to suggest "he didn't fare all that well," no rookie QB ever did it better. Since he didn't sit a year, it's very difficult to read him listed as a reason why a rookie QB should sit. Rivers sat for TWO years, and STILL didn't put up Roethlisberger's rookie rating.

July 6, 2007  04:00 PM ET

Ok, you're right, I shouldn't have included Roethlisberger in that list since we were talking about first seasons. But Big Ben (in 2004) threw just over 2/3 the number of passes Rivers did (in 2006) - the ridiculous number of run plays the Steelers called took a lot of coverage off of the receivers.

This could shape up to be a great throwdown, hopefully Hook'em 10 will reply soon.

July 9, 2007  07:24 PM ET

Just noticed this was started three days ago. If Hook'em 10 doesn't reply by July 12 at 11:59:59 PM it will be counted as a forfeit.
