[1] I dont smoke pot
[2] I would hope everyone would make the wise choice to avoid all drugs
[3] I think we spend tooo much $ incarcerating people on simple possession charges. Those billions of $ could go to levees in Louisiana, better schools, borders in Texas/Arizona, better pay for our military, etc....

So.... if we are going to bash Mike Phelps for his bong hit then we ALSO must bash Pete Carrol. Why? Carrol frequently brings in Snoop Dog to games and practices and USC events.

What is Snoop Dog BEST known for/as? A pothead.
He brags about it...promotes it...sings about it...and admits publically he frequently does it.

Why do we bash Mike Phelps for his lone act when Pete Carrol does WORSE??? He promotes the man who promotes pot more than anyone else in the country.

Mike was doing his bong hit at a private party.
Pete Carrol holds Snoop Dog up high (no pun intended) PUBLICALLY on a COLLEGE CAMPUS!

I say legalize small amounts for personal use.
Tax it like alcohol or cigarettes.
Stop wasting billionsof $$$ and hours upon hours fighting pot.

But if we keep it illegal and want to bash Phelps......then we must bash Carrol also

Why bash Carroll and not Snoop?

First off, as far as I know, Snoop quit the weed years back. Snoop is also one of the biggest supporters of minor league football, and a HUGE USC fan.

Why wouldn't you bring a HUGE name into your stadium?

This TD goes all over the board and I have no idea what I am arguing.:P

Pot is not a PED, it is a demoralizer, and doesn't effect one's performance.

It is natural, and a lot less problematic then things like liquor and guns.

I agree it should be legalized, taxed and distributed under the eye of the gov't.

Phelps should not get bashed for being a college kid. He is ony 23, and we can't expect him to be perfect.

But the fact that you put Carrol in the same sentence as someone who broke the law, only because an endorser of his team also has is preposterous.

Thats the point.

If Phelps is bad b/c he smoked pot then carrol must be bad b/c he promotes THE man who is known for pot/drug use.

Why do we demonize Phelps but not Carrol?

I lost this but IDC

Carrol doesn't promote Snoop, it's the other way around.

Snoop promotes USC.....That isn't a school for kids...it's a school for adults.

oh well... this one is a loss but I still think its hypocritical.

Mike Phelps (also an adult) takes a hit and we demonize him.

Pete Carrol embraces Snoop Dog....who has made his living from his association with pot...and nobody cares.

oh well. good TD

He made his living from RAP....and smoked pot in the process.

How do you blame Carroll for allowing a superstar to promote your college?

Your hypocritical.

If Pete Carroll smoked the Gange then Yes, but he hasn't.....atleast hasn't been caught.

Fact: Weed is less dangerous than most of the drugs you get from your doctor.Fact: Phelps is 23, 23 years olds often smoke pot at some point.Fact: Snoop Dogg does not = Pete Carroll. Why punish Caroll for snoop doggs actions.

Indeed.

I don't think people are really "bashing" Phelps. He is a young guy who stepped out of his "world" and was a "normal" person for a minute. He hit a bong. People have done so much worse. That said,

What the hell does Carroll have to do with this?? Why throw him under the bus?? Just go at Snoop.

We finally see eye to eye on this one. Not sure about your reference to weed being a "demoralizer". Much more of an "uplifter".....If weed was legalized and taxed properly the revenue generated (and not having to spend billions on enforcement) would go a long way toward solving the economic problems faced by this great nation. <inhales deeply and feels uplifted>

Oops I meant to reference lana's reference to weed being a "demoralizer" not Confucius.

February 8, 2009  01:16 PM ET

Hey 10acious, do you consider alcohol a drug? (And therefore should be avoided?)

February 8, 2009  01:22 PM ET

What about the fact that no one knows what he was hitting? I am not stupid. I realize that bong's are used for pot....however, in the U.S.A a person is innocent until proven guilty...not the other way around. A hoka is a traditional pot inhaler but I have only used it for tobacco....(pot gets caught in the tubing and it is a MESS) anyway, I have pictures of me using a hoka...does that mean someone should assume i was smoking pot. I am not aware, I could be wrong, of any testing done by the association but shouldn't they be testing Michael-son before we ridicule and crucify him before the propaganda machine.

Oh and for the record so no one takes offense...I don't think smoking pot makes you less of anything. I think if you NEED IT to survive, it's an addiction, much like alcohol, cigs, anything like that and that to me constitutes as a problem. But that is just me looking at it that way.Doesn't make anyone less of a person, or less of a good person.

Thanks for the clarification. I agree. Now I need a hit.

Fact? Where are you getting your information?

The AMA would tell you that "These results suggest that residual diminished brain activation is still observed after discontinuing cannabis use in motor cortical circuits."

Can you truly think of a prescription or OTC drug that a person could take as directed that would be equal to this effect?

"As compared with smoking tobacco, smoking marijuana was associated with a nearly fivefold greater increment in the blood carboxyhemoglobin level, an approximately threefold increase in the amount of tar inhaled, and retention in the respiratory tract of one third more inhaled tar (P less than 0.001). "

Where in the world do people get the idea that cannabis is this innocuous little leaf that has no effect on the human body?

If anything is to be argued on the Phelps situation it would be that it's his body and he's going to do what he wants with it. Just don't ask his sponsors to like it if they're a family oriented business.

February 8, 2009  01:59 PM ET

I thought Carrol acted like a jerk at Sanchez's presser. He should have smoked a jay with Snoop beforehand.

February 8, 2009  01:59 PM ET

what the **** is wrong with you? legalize "small amounts" for personal use? **** your not a pothead

February 8, 2009  02:03 PM ET

"What are its long-term effects?
Marijuana smoke contains some of the same cancer-causing compounds as tobacco, sometimes in higher concentrations.Studies show that someone who smokes five joints per week may be taking in as many cancer-causing chemicals as someone who smokes a full pack of cigarettes every day."

Where in the world do you get facts here? with words like STUDIES SHOW, and MAY BE....there is no proof.....because these ppl can still be smoking cigarettes.

Every negative they have found for pot, can also be attributed to other areas in their lives.

I agree that it is a demoralizer, as it takes away your want to do things.

So if you have a medical prescription for Marijuana because you need it to survive that makes you an addict?? hmmmm. I don't think so.

Remember, the Gov't will say anything they want.

The whole reefer madness theory has been proved wrong and erroneous.

You don't know the half of it. You should look up some of the things they said about Pot and other drugs to make it illegal.I think it was in the 30's when they said stuff like,"Marijuana makes white women sleep with black men."They told some outlandish lies, some worse than the one above.

I know all about it.....hence the reefer madness reference.

Marijuana was banned because those "smoked it", wouldn't want to do what the Gov't wanted of them.
