Rex Grossman wasn't the only reason why the Bears lost the SB.

Grossman was pretty awful in the SB but he had a lot of help in that department. Starting with their defense, the Bears were out played in every aspect of the game with exception of a missed extra point by Vinetieri and Hester???s opening TD. Here are some stats to prove the defense was at fault as well.

Defense:

191 yards rushing against
24 1st downs given up
1 blown coverage by Chris Harris on third and long (went for TD to Wayne).
Numerous missed tackles by their best defenders-I mean how many times can a dump pass work for 9-10 yards? Ron Rivera and Lovie Smith were extremely conservative with their game plan and play calling, never really trying to mix it up on Manning (big mistake). Early on when they did blitz Manning they caused him to throw the ball away and created a turnover (INT). They relied on the COVER 2 and played not to lose the game.

I'll talk about the offense and coaching in my next two arguments. Please be fair and wait until I post them. Thank you.

Of course its not one players fault for a loss but Grossman was the biggest reason why they lost and when you are a quarterback its on your shoulders.
Reasons why the defense allowed those points and yards:
1.They played the Colts(Everyone knows they are going to score and gain yards on the defense.)
2. Rex Grossman caused three turnovers(2ints and 1 fumble lost he fumbled twice)
3. Time of possesion difference
Chicago-21:56
Indy-38:04
4. Number of first downs(11 compared to Indy's 24 first downs)

The defense did pretty well holding the Colts to only 29 points. The Colts had a 3rd down conversion precentage of 44 and a red zone scoring percentage of 17%. Pretty good defense considering it was on the field 17 game minutes more then the Colts defense.

Why exactly did you take this TD then? Everyone is so unrealistic and unfair when evaluating Grossman. The fact remains the defense couldn't get off the field. Anyways, here's my next argument on why the running game failed miserably and didn't help Grossman at all.

Now for the offense:

They only ended up with 3 rushing 1st downs in the entire game. Their offensive line have to share in some of the blame for that horrible stat. Benson getting hurt didn???t help at all. They lost their punishing back that would???ve helped in wearing down the Colts undersized defense in the bad conditions. It would???ve been perfect for his style of running. In essence, this caused Ron Turner and the offense to alter their game plan dramatically. Thus, Grossman was thrusted into the spotlight once again. What ensued was downright ugly. Turner???s desire to pass the ball down the field and the Bears inability to run the ball put the young QB in a very bad spot.

When things go wrong its the QBs job to pull the offense together. Yes you cant expect Grossman to take over the game and light up the Colts but he can atleast manage the game which he should do. Grossman's one touchdown came off the drive that they started on their 43 yard line. The defense couldnt get off the field? No the Bears offense couldnt stay on the field. The special teams stepped up and scored a touchdown on the opening kickoff and gave Indy an average kickoff start on their 29 yard line and gave the Bears an average kickoff start on their own 34. The defense did pretty well for the amount of time they were on the field. While the Colts had an average drive start on their 42 yard line. Grossman did a good job having long drives to give the defense rest. Drives ended at own 42, touchdown, own 48, own 13, own 28, own 45, own 33(just drives that ended in punts). Considering the defense had to defend the Colts while the Colts had better field position and averaged a start almost from the 50 yard line and to hold them to 29 points and a 17% red zone scoring percentage is pretty good. Thomas Jones had 112 rushing yards thats pretty good.

OK does anybody else notice a trend? One person is following the title of this TD and other decided just to argue a completely different topic, connected only by the same game. Please people start voting based on who is arguing what the bold print says at the top not whether or not Rex was the main reason. Of course he was but not the only! Here's my last point-

Coaching:

While Tony Dungy stuck to his game plan of taking what the Bears defense gave his offense, Rivera and the defense made no adjustments at all. They continued to be conservative and elected not to blitz Manning. I say if you re going to lose, go down fighting!!! All those passes underneath made me want to vomit. Manning didn t need to do anything different, just pass to his RBs and hand-off on a delay or draw. Lovie Smith seemed to be frozen in time, like a deer stuck in the headlights while his fast, athletic defense was mired in the muck.

As you can see the whole Bears team (exception Hester) had a p*ss poor game and were unable to make anything work on offense or create pressure on Manning.

Arguement to your last statement actually Thomas Jones had a good game 115 rushing yards on just 12 carries.
How am i going against the throwdown you said how poorly the defense played and i was arguing that fact. Its impossible for it to be one person fault for a loss in a TEAM sport. Also like when people complain about ONE bad call but think if the team would have converted before the call the call wouldnt have mattered. Im one of the few who doesnt think Grossman is that bad look at my throwdowns i know ive defended him a few times but look when you are a quarterback in the superbowl everyones going to be looking for you do succeed or atleast manage the game and not cause turnovers. You say the defense was walked on they held the Colts to 2 TOUCHDOWNS.

the biggest reason is because their owners suck.

July 13, 2007  06:51 PM ET

It wasn't just his fault, its never just one persons fault... but he didn't exactly light it up either.

July 13, 2007  06:52 PM ET

Optimo-what does their ownership have anything to do with it? They've sucked in the past but have done a good job recently at stabilizing management, coaching staff, and actually opened up the checkbook on free agency.

July 13, 2007  06:56 PM ET

I think the reason the Bears lost was because of Ryan Leaf.

July 13, 2007  07:06 PM ET

i think pad of butter is right

July 13, 2007  07:17 PM ET

The bears d were wlked over.

July 13, 2007  07:19 PM ET

crappy owners sabotage the team

July 13, 2007  07:35 PM ET

I think pad of butter has a pad of butter for a brain.

July 13, 2007  07:35 PM ET

and Seniore Optimo is getting high on his own supply.

July 13, 2007  07:39 PM ET

Furthermore, why didn't Turner call more runs? TJ had a 7 yard average but only 16 carries. Our coaching staff was out coached by Dungy and Indy by large margin.

July 13, 2007  07:46 PM ET

Get your eyes off Lana!! I never said they got walked on, she did. Thanks for defending Rex, but you didn't argue the title of the TD. FACT is FACT!!! I don't disagree with what you're saying but I wanted a Rex hater to accept the TD, not a supporter that took the meaning literally.

July 13, 2007  07:55 PM ET

Leaf how are you winning, argue something othere than playangrys point

July 13, 2007  08:18 PM ET

Leaf made no argument in the title's reference. The ONLY reason, not the biggest reason. Come on.

July 13, 2007  08:29 PM ET

A single player can not be the ONLY reason for a loss in a TEAM sport hence why i argued the biggest reason.

July 13, 2007  08:48 PM ET

hence your supposed to choose the other side duh

The reason they lost was because Lovie Smith refused to just give the ball to Thomas Jones, after Benson the walking **** got hurt. Their offense relies on the balace of their running game, not to mention that during the season and ealier in the playoffs running the ball is what won them games. If he had given Jones 30+ carries, then grossmen has less chances to turn over, and we score more. I blame the gameplan and lack of running the ball.
