Big Ry is way better than prince fielder. if he wasnt injured this year he would have more hrs and rbi's than prince. he would at least be hitting 270. also. big ry would smash barry bonds hr record if they didnt bring him up when he was 26 years old. if they brung him up when he was like 21 or 22 he would be the way better than prince, so Ryan Howard is better than Prince Fielder.

Even with Howard's injury, he's come back this season with the hype of a returning MVP.

And he hasn't backed it up.

Howard has showed in several occasions he does not have the patience of a hitter who will consistently hit for average. He will always be an outstanding power hitter because he has such a powerful swing, but he clearly gets frustrated early in a game if he doesn't get pitched to, and the shift they put on him has clearly taken away his ability to get base hits.

Fielder, on the other hand, has already shown he has similar power to Howard, and he is a much tougher out thus far in his career. You may disagree, but who is batting behind Prince Fielder? Jonny Estrada, a guy who has no power at all, so it's easier to avoid Fielder. Howard had Pat Burrell last year, and before he became the Most Hated Man in Philly, he had 29 HRs and 95 RBI. Howard got pitched to more than Fielder is.

Howard has more Intenional walks than fielder. Burrell sucks, estrada is better than burrell. Howard hit .313 last year that is good for a powerr hitter. he also won the HR derby.

Yeah, the Home Run Derby is a true indicator about how good of a hitter, power or otherwise, a guy is. Ask Yankees fans what they think about Bobby Abreu's performance in the Home Run Derby and how much that has helped them.

And last I checked, intentional walks don't lower your batting average. Either way, Howard has 12 more walks than Fielder does this year, don't think Howard is getting all that many more passes. Plus, Fielder has him in OPS 1,000 to 950. That's a significant advantage in power hitting as well as overall offensive production.

None of this changes the fact Howard clearly has a hole in his swing, and can't hit inside pitches effectively enough to force a team to stop moving their shortstop over second base I don't see teams playing Fielder that way. He hits well to all fields, and is proving it right now in every hitting statistic in which both are eligible.

They put the shift there to takeaway hits from howard which the shift does. they put the shift there because he is such a great hitter. they cant put the infield in all the way when they want to play up to get the runner at the plate because he hits the ball so hard. He also won rookie of the year and MVP whick fielder hasnt won.
Howard had 22 Hrs in like 80 games in his first year. He played half of the season and still won rookie of the year. Prince played a full year and didnt even win rookie of the year.

I think several people here could list off a lot of guys who didn't win Rookie of the Year and ended up being good players.

"They put the shift there to takeaway hits from howard which the shift does." Whhhaaa...? Are you high? The shift is in place because Howard can't hit inside pitches as well as he can hit middle-part and outer-half pitches. It takes away his strength. The fact his numbers have dropped off is more an indication of that than his minor injuries earlier this season. He is below last year in every power statistic, whereas Fielder, the non-Rookie of the Year, has improved in all of them without much to protect him. Fielder is going up, Howard has, at best leveled off this year, and the stats prove that. Fielder will get his fair share of MVP votes, as he is the face behind the resurgent Brewers. It should have been Pujols last year, anyway.

For the record, you said the Phillies should have brought him up "when he was 21 or 22," or, the years when the Phils paid Jim Thome a ton of money to play first base. Howard was still in college when he was 21.

Thank you, and please vote for the best argument.

I-R-O-N ______________!!!!!!!!!(fill in the blank)

However Phillyman311, he was injured and thats what happened. His stats were effected by it but thats way it goes. Also, I have never heard anyone call Ryan Howard "Big" Ry". You also voted for yourself. Prince Fielder looks better this year to me. He is on a better team too.

July 15, 2007  05:35 PM ET

Curtain? Is that an inside joke you have with Steelercooz?

July 15, 2007  05:36 PM ET

the phillies obviously didnt bring him up for a reason. Could it be.... He wasnt ready?

No, never mind thats ridiculous

July 15, 2007  05:36 PM ET

Yes. Shhhhh.....don't tell anyone. lol

July 15, 2007  05:36 PM ET

I call him big ry so

July 15, 2007  05:37 PM ET

phils are better than the brew crew

July 15, 2007  05:37 PM ET

Big Ry? That's weird.

July 15, 2007  05:37 PM ET

Ok, COletrain I thought so. Big Ry? I think of bread when you say "Big Ry" Make up some better nicknames or refer to them as their names.

July 15, 2007  05:42 PM ET

Just ask yourself this, guys, why would they put on a massive shift for Howard if he was a great hitter? He's a power hitter, but cannot go the other way, so he now gets pitched to his weakness, and most of the time, hits right into the shift, or takes the walk because the Phillies have no one to protect him.

And if it isn't a first-pitch fastball down the center of the plate, he gets all huffy, and starts muttering to himself, pointing at the shift they put on.

Believe me, guys, no one here calls him Big Ry.

July 15, 2007  05:48 PM ET

he had most of his hr's to the opposite field last year also had the most in the league. this argument is who is the better power hitter anyway.

July 15, 2007  05:50 PM ET

These are your first statements: "Big Ry is way better than prince fielder. if he wasnt injured this year he would have more hrs and rbi's than prince. he would at least be hitting 270."

Not only do you have nothing to support that with, but now you're trying to change the argument. I'm calling shenanigans...

July 15, 2007  05:57 PM ET

what?

July 15, 2007  05:57 PM ET

r u forfeiting? or what? wat does shenanigans mean?

July 15, 2007  06:05 PM ET

If you don't know, forget it. I was calling you out for changing the argument. But if you want to bring up the HR Derby, go right on ahead...

July 15, 2007  06:13 PM ET

How is this close? Steelercooz made 10 times the arguments that phillyman made. phillyman, I haven't seen one good argument from you on this site yet and I've seen about 3 of your throwdowns. I personally think Ryan Howard is better but you do NOT vote on the topic, you vote on the arguments that each person brings to the table. The score right now should read 12-1 in favor of Steelercooz. This is terrible. It happened to be today so, Steeler, I feel your pain.

July 15, 2007  06:14 PM ET

Hey Phillyman311, lets make an argument alright?

July 15, 2007  06:15 PM ET

I meant a TD, since you think your Phillies are so good...

July 15, 2007  06:15 PM ET

Do you want to make one or not?

July 15, 2007  06:34 PM ET

"big ry would smash barry bonds hr record if they didnt bring him up when he was 26 years old. if they brung him up when he was like 21 or 22 "

Guess why he wasn't brought up? Cause he wasn't good enough!
