Soccer will never be a mainstream sport in the US until it changes to be high scoring.

Never, too lame, boring and Americans need action, and we define action by the amount of scoring. If a game has no statistics to talk about, what's there to talk about?

Nobody except foreigners wants to watch a sport where the final score is 2-1. That means only 3 things happened in the entire game!

Scoring is not the issue that is keeping soccer from becoming a mainstream sport. America watches 1-0, 1-1, 2-1 baseball games all the time. Just because scoring doesn't happen, doesn't mean the game was boring. 3 things need to happen in the US for soccer to become more mainstream.
- More exposure to the game. Because the game is 45 minutes (give or take) of non stop action, advertising (commercials) is extremely limited. Therefore, the network itself has to either charge more for advertising or foot the bill themselves. Because of this, soccer stays out of the prime channels and instead gets picked up by channels like ESPN2, FSN, or something along those lines. While these stations are bringing up awareness, until prime channels carry soccer, the majority of watchers are left without the soccer experience
- Better quality players and MLS league competition. While the average skill level is increasing in the US, the MLS is basically laughed at on a worldwide level. Better players, better skill level, might equal into more fan support and better game exposure
- US Team needs to win consistently at the worldwide level. World Cup would be great. America likes winners

Forfeited Turn

Seriously, no argument? Figures....

Why soccer may never get to the mainstream level in the good ol US of A.:

- WINNING - US cannot stomach watching themselves lose constantly on an intl level. If the US can actually step up on the big stage and pull off one 1980-like miracle, followers will come. Exposure will grow. I think this is the biggest thing holding the sport back right now. There just is no pride for US in the sport. US gets better and better and better, but just can't seem to get over the hump into 'elite'. If the US team can consistently win on a higher level, this will help win respect for soccer in America. Could allow kids to get into the sport, which will then snowball into a bigger fan base and more kids playing means better future teams. Better players start playing on intl teams and you can see more interest in the sport growing.

There are just too many sports already established here. Intl soccer is on the same schedule as NFL and NBA seasons. MLS plays same schedule as MLB. If they don't have a ntl interest in the sport, why would America watch? It isn't because of the scoring...

Can't wait for 24 hours to pass so you can forfeit argument #3

The down side of Soccer, and why it will always be relegated to a second tier sport in the United States, is that the games components do not mirror the attitude and social beliefs of our citizens. Americans love scoring, blood, aggression, incredible fetes of human proportion and most of all sheer contact. Soccer is a game of slow, deliberate advances that sometimes result in a low percentage attempt of a shot on goal. It is analogous to flying a plane, short bursts of terror and excitement surrounded by hours of passive action. It is a game where players who are tripped, reel on the ground with what appears to be fatal wounds, only to be given a shot of ice and then return to play. While at times exciting to watch, and even more so when the home team wears your colors and actually defeats world powers, soccer will never rise to the level of American Football for the vast majority of the American sporting public.

So because soccer isn't NFL, America isn't interested? Americans are just a bunch of bloodthirsty people that need violence to sustain their interests? Who are you kidding? Why is baseball such a beloved sport in America then? You want to talk about short bursts of excitement surrounded by hours of passive action, that's your game. But American's LOVE baseball!
And what about soccer fans in other countries? Columbian fans killed their own player for a mistake he made in the '94 World Cup. Good luck getting out of Estadia Azteca wearing the opposing teams colors in Mexico (at the least you get showered in unknown body fluids). In Italy, they have to actively police the streets to avoid rival fans killing each other. I might be wrong, but I think they even split the streets on entry to the stadium... But you think that soccer fans aren't out for blood? How come they don't like Am. Football?
Outside of quality players, competition level, and exposure issues of soccer in America, I think Americans have too much going on to build the passion that is needed to become a soccer nation. It's like sports A.D.D. here. Winning is the only way to capture the attn. of sports fans in US.

bconn is right. He's always right.

Soccer is for pansy euros.

American athletes are superior in every way.

Soccer was started by Euros during the Black Plague because they were too frail and sick to invent a manlier sports. Europeans invented soccer because they didn't want to tackle each other in the 900 year old city streets covered with 900 years of human waste and horse dung. Soccer was started by the Bring Out Your Dead guy when a head fell off the cart.

Long live football. it will take over the world. NFL Africa. NFL Europe. NFL Antarctica. Not Australia though. They don't have any grass.

All hail bconn, the wisest of the wise. The future of America. The embassador of sports and the future representative of the human race when aliens land.

Do you only read the last chapter of a book?
Do you chug cheap beer to get drunk, instead of savoring the taste on the way?
Do you look forward to climaxing ... without enjoying the rest of the activities involved in sex?

It's not all about the scoring. But you're right, America has been desensitized. I'm surprised Hockey has it's popularity.

SoCalBroncosFan has an excellently-assed Icon. That gets my vote. Soccer can be fun when Brazil play. Many of their Fans also have good asses. Otherwise Soccer is pretty boring unless you really know the game. Euros feel the same way about 1-0 pitching duels.

Bconn you lose again congrats idiot.

November 2, 2009  01:19 PM ET

People keep getting tons of free wins off of this fake account!

November 2, 2009  01:20 PM ET

So in contrast - If the soccer game were to change their scoring to "6 points per goal" people like bconn would watch it. Cuz the score would be relative to American football - 12-6, or 24-18. Hmmm ... interesting ... does'nt change anything, but if it will help people like bconn get over their "bruseaphob" (fear of soccer phobia) I say "let's do it!"

Is that the real word for fearing soccer? I didn't even know that was a popular enough fear to have a name. Well I have bconngemini9aphobia, a fear of idiots.

I don't think that scoring has anthing to do with it. I think that it is to slow of a paced game. The have to Jog up and down a huge field, they go the same distance in football, but it is always at full speed. In basketball, they have a much smaller field. Baseball survives because of the HR, the crazy pitches, and its tradition of being Americas past time. Even though Hockey has similar scores (much more since Bettman has begun his campaign to ruin the NHL by allowing more scoring), the sport is played a breakneck speeds and huge hits. Fighting doesn't hurt either. (And don't bring that "Fighting should be eliminated" crap, at least they solve it on the ice instead of a twitter battle.)

2-0 Baseball games are normally some of the best to watch.
I love a good ole defensive Football game where the final is 9-3.

Low scoring is not the problem.

The real problem with soccer:
1) Lack of stats... we all love stats, we love to compare QB to QB pass %, yards, TD-Int ratio. We love a pitchers ERA and his oppBA vs. Lefties. We love to see a RB's YPC. A team's 3rd Down efficiency.
Soccer doesn't have enough stats.

2) The random nature of penalties. Give us something a little less random and a little more concrete.

3) TIME... We Americans hate the 'extra time' that soccer ends up with. Give us a clock that makes sense. If you are gonna tack on 'extra time' at the end to make up for stoppage, just stop the clock. Too much randomness on the 'extra time'

As far as Right's arguments:
Advertising: This can be fixed 2 ways.
1) Stop play for 30 secs at penalties and out of bounds, etc (can be tied in with my stopping the clock suggestion above)
2) Split screen... they do it for Indy racing.

2.penalties aren't random, but calculated... just like every other sport, you just don't understand the game.

3.extra time is announced at the 90 min. mark so you know how much time is left. or would you rather have a 60 min. football game last 4hours, that makes sense.

So basically, midget goal keepers would solve the popularity problem? I actually agree with bconn on the stats analysis aspect though. Watching ESPN breakdown a football game is like watching brain surgery. The attention to the slightest, seemingly insignificant fact is harped upon as if the future of humanity depended on it. When Brett Favre wakes up in the morning, rising from the left side of the bed and eating Pop Tarts for breakfast, he is more prone to throw a 300yd passing game while playing in a open stadium on the West Coast named after a financial institution, while playing between the hours of 4pm-5:30pm.

In soccer there's basically goals scored, cards, time of possession, and shots. People don't even care about assists. If ESPN only covered soccer, there would be 16 hours of Ron Popeil infomercials on.

November 3, 2009  03:37 PM ET

Low scoring is nothing. Actually Football has seen some 3-0 games and that is a soccer score.

He has ZERO friends on this site ZERO after 17 Throwdowns. charleswoodson could beat him anyday. I beat bconn 35-10 on a td. Im sure its the most votes he ever got on a certain TD.

Makienda without dupes vs Bconn would be a classic.
