The Colts defense will be way better this year than last year

I know the Colt's defense can only get better compared to last year, but I think that they will be better than most people think. Here is why:

1.) Bob Sanders is back and healthy, I know he's been plagued with injury's for awhile but after his post season preformances he's probably back to 100% healthy

2.) Cory Simon is reactivated and along with Booger McFarland, they can create hell for anyone who runs their way.

3.) Freddy Keihiko (I think i spelled that right) can take Cato June's place, June was good, but only had about two breakout seasons, and know Freddy's where Cato was a few years ago. He was a back up, and mostly played special teams, now he's the starter in the depth chart and may be as good as Cato.

My apologies about not submitting an argument, I was unable to access the site.

The playoffs aside, the Colts defense performed very poorly last year, giving up 173 yards and 22.5 points per game. Now, they lost both starting corners (Jason David and Nick Harper), their starting linebacker (Cato June), and Montae Reagor, a part of their defensive tackle rotation. Granted, they do have a few good players, such as Bob Sanders and Dwight Freeney. But the losses they suffered, without any suitable replacements, will further weaken an already notoriously bad defense.

They did preforme badly last year. The main reason was their run defense. With Cory Simon being out last year and Bob Sanders being out, they couldn't do anything to stop the run. Bob Sanders is a safety who can and will tackle the running back at the line of scrimmage. Also, Cory Simon will help out a lot. No one knows what will happen to Simon, but right know he is on the team right know so I am going to use him. With McFarland and Simon side by side, there is no way that teams are going to get any types of runs up the gut. Lets face it, Simon is way to big for a lineman to move.

But as you say, Simon may not even be on the team when the season rolls around, due to injury concerns and a large contract. It appears the Colts are actually leaning towards releasing him. Simon has been relatively ineffective even when playing. In his two years with the Colts, Simon has recorded only 34 tackles, no sacks, and one forced fumble. McFarland is good, but one guy can't carry a defense. Even with McFarland, the Colts ranked dead last in rushing defense. I can't that group improving much, particurally with the loss of June, who was their leading tackler. Saying Keiaho will replace June is quite audacious; Keiaho had 19 tackles to June's 142. I'm not saying it's impossible, but that kind of production is hard to replace. There were options in free agency to replace June, but the Colts didn't pursue anyone. Their losses outweigh their gains, so it is unfeasible that the Colts D will be way better this year.

A couple years back no one had ever heard of Cato June. Now Keiaho is in the similar position (like I've been saying). I'm not saying that Keiaho will be near as good as June, he only played one game last year. Bob Sanders will help out a lot in the run game. Did you see the playoff games? He added more than his talent by being on the field. The Colts held the Cheifs running back to very minimal yards when Sanders came back. The run D will be a lot better, so will the Pass D.

Yeah, but thats like saying Matt Cassel will be as good as Tom Brady, because Cassel is inexperienced and unknown like Brady was. I know it's a different position, but same idea. Saying the Colts D will be better because Keiaho shows potential isn't a very strong argument.

Sanders is effective and a big help when in, but he has injury problems. He has never played a full season in his brief career, his totals being 6, 14, and 4 games the last three years. I just don't think that these players will allow the Colts D to be "way better" than last year.

Cato is better than his replacement, and Corey Simon isn't nearly as good as he used to be, there's talk he'll be released.

Keaiho.

Why would the Colts defense be WAY better when the released Nick Harper from the pass defense.

Now I'm not sure how great Harper was, but I know that Indy didn't have that bad of a pass defense. In fact they were second in pass defense in the NFL.

Now part of that was because anyone could run on them, but still. I just don't see why they should be that much better. Maybe better but not WAY better.

Harper was alright, he was teh one that recorved that Jerrome Bettis fumble in the playoffs a couple years ago. he was just average

Thats ok :)

July 19, 2007  11:12 PM ET

It is Freddy Keiaho. But how do you have TWO breakout seasons? Normally a breakout season happens once as in they breakout...

July 19, 2007  11:13 PM ET

Oh, and Sanders is guaranteed to miss at least three games...

July 19, 2007  11:35 PM ET

Having Bob Sanders means a great deal for the Colts.

Not having June, 2 starting corners, and a few other losses wont help.

The defense will still be terrible.

July 19, 2007  11:36 PM ET

And the Colts wont make it back to the Super Bowl.

I think that the Colts defense will be in the middle of the pack next year. I don't think that they played great in the playoffs, I just think that they played a guy who shouldn't have a job(Herm Edwards), then Steve McNair just played a bad game, then the defense gave up 34 points in a game which the Colts needed two bad calls--Ellis Hobbs pass interference and the Tully Banta-Cain roughing the passer-- to win, and then they played a team with Rex Grossman at quarterback.
