Joe will stay with the Twins, for several reasons:

1) He has lived in Minnesota his whole life, and has the chance to be the single most popular player in the state's history. This is pretty simple...I don't care how much every team would love to have him -- there is no way any city could have the same attatchment to Joe that Twins fans do, and Mauer realizes that. He is the ultimate Hometown Hero in sports right now.

2)It's not all about money, but Joe WILL get paid by the Twins. Joe has publicly stated that he does not want to be the highest player in MLB. He just wants to win, and the young Twins have the farm system and proven players to maintain success. With the money the Twins will undoubtably draw in from their new stadium, not only will they have the resources to keep him, they'll be able to attract potential free agents and actually have a chance of signing them.

3)Mauer is not the type of player for the big city. He is quiet, reserved, polite, and prefers to be in a place where he isn't criticized for every damn thing he does wrong. His personality is certainly not the kind that leads to success in New York or LA.

More to come, out of room.

I happen to agree with you so this isnt much of a throwdown. But....to make this a TD.....

Joe Mauer could leave Minny to go to a team that actually contends almost every year. The Twins always have to make this big comeback to win the Centeral. It seems like it every year. Then they lose first round in the playoffs then go home.

Mauer could be traded to the
Cardinals
Red Sox
Yankees
Tigers......I know
Dodgers

The fact is they are some of the contenders and the Twins really arent right now.

He wants to win a Championship and wants to be on a contender

First, I'll look at your potential landing spots...
no to Tigers, that trade simply wouldn't happen
no to Cards, they are by no means in a position to be paying Pujols AND Mauer the kind of money they deserve.
Dodgers already have a great catcher in Russel Martin...and no DH to slide one of them into.

Red Sox and Yanks are looking for a new catcher, but what would they give up? Both have strong farm systems to some degree, but the Twins have a team built to compete within a few years, so the Twins will demand ready-to-shine players...doubt they will give those kind of players.

So...here's why the Twins would be a smart place for him to stay...
With Justin Morneau, Denard Span, Delmon Young (who dominated late in the season), and Jason Kubel, the Twins have a great core of players entering their prime, and several young OFs and a 3rd baseman who are closing in the majors.

The pitching staff is young but talented, and minus some injuries that hampered Baker and Slowey they could have been great this year.

The Twins will actually have the money to sign these players (if they aren't already) with Target Field, too, unlike in the past.

This is a very easy win attempt, but I was bored so...I took it

For the Cards trade they could trade Matt Holiday for Mauer. Just to let you know.

The Yankees have all the money in the world. They are willing to trade their farm systems for Joe Mauer. Jorge is going to retire soon, so they will need a catcher. Maybe Joe won't go anywhere this summer, but wait 2-3 years and he will get tired of losing, and want to be traded.

This man wants to win. He cant do everything on his team and still lose first round. When he hits .350 30 Jacks and 100 RBIs and he still loses. he will get mad. They better get a good trade or someone better step up becasue when he gets mad, he will want to be traded.

The Red Sox also need a catcher, and they also have talent in pitching and the farm system to trade fot Joe Maurer.

OK, the Cards couldn't trade Holliday for Mauer for two reasons: One, the money they would have to pay Holliday just for next year would be huge...why wouldn't the Twins just try to pay Mauer instead of having to overpay a lesser player in Holliday? Secondly, the Twins already have an overcrowded outfield, plus several OF prospects, so the last thing the Twins are looking for is another one.

I admit, if things go bad down the road, auer could force the Twins' hand like Santana did. But like I put in the title...after next season he will still be a Twin, because the near future looks very bright with a great new stadium and a great core of players on all levels. Whether he ends his career as a Twin is impossible to predict. Because of this, I really think Mauer will take a contract that will pay less than New York. And despite the fact that the Twins have been reluctant to spend in the past, the new stadium will bring in massive amounts of money, especially with fan support for the Twins as high as it is. This will not only make the Twins more inclined to spend money on Mauer, but other key players on the team as well.

the stadium has nothing to do with anything and Mauer will not win a WS when he is with the Twinkees

Um, how many teams have contended MORE over the last few years? Division winner 5 of the last 8 years. How many teams have done that?

BTW, Mauer is signed for 2010...and they won't trade him...

I mostly agree with left, though point two of argument #1 is, well, mostly fiction...and point #4 of argument #1 is based off goodness knows what.

I guess it's about who is more wrong...so far, right

what??? Jason Bay may be the quietest star in baseball but he fits in fine in boston which i would consider a big city

But does Bay qualify as one of the biggest in Boston? I'd say Pedroia, Youkilis, Ortiz, Beckett, and Papelbon all get WAY more attention than he does in Boston. If Mauer were to move to a new city, only Jeter in New York would be more publicized than him wherever he went.

Trade is a tough situation because there's no guarantee he won't declare for free agency anyway at the end of next year. What team is going to give up quality prospects for a rent-a-player?

Also, you have to think that Mauer isn't going to catch for too much long. He's having a hard time catching 100 games a year and this isn't likely to get better as he gets only. Whoever signs him as a free agent can't assume he's their catcher for the next 8 years, similar to the situation with Victor Martinez.

November 5, 2009  10:52 AM ET

He caught 139 games just last year. 4th most in the majors for catcher. He caught 109 this year even though he missed the first month...he caught 116 in 2005 and 120 in 2006.

The guy who was 10th in catching games had 115 this year. Mauer could catch more if the DH wasn't a viable option for him while the Twins DH goes to the OF...

November 5, 2009  10:53 AM ET

hypothetically, if Mauer were to be traded, I'm sure it'd be like the Santana thing, the team getting him would have X amount of time to sign him to an extension before the trade is completed...

November 5, 2009  11:00 AM ET

He's on roids any how so I'm sure he'll get traded to the Yanks or Boston.

The 139 is definitely an aberration. Who knows if it contributed to the back problems that caused him to miss all of April? In either case, the 143 games he played in 2008 is the most he's every played. He's missed at least 18-20 games every year and in 2007 he missed approx. 40 games with that bizarre kidney problem. Who knows if catching exacerbated that.

Given his history of injuries and the quality of his bat, it would only make sense for some team, including the Twins, to want to move him towards 1B/DH for a significant portion of games in the near future. I just can't see him as a 32-year old catcher given his injury history to date.

Forgetting the steroids comment for a moment, you bring up a good point...

Left's assertion implies that the Twins will definitely resign Mauer to a reasonable deal. But we know the Twins will have needs and if Mauer wants to be paid most of his worth, they could still take the picks over re-signing him.

Russell Martin for Mauer, plus a prospect or two

Ha, right...like Kershaw? That's the only way that one makes sense...

Mauer will stay with Minnesota. They are a solid team with a lot of young talent and he is a hometown guy. If Morneau didn't get hurt they would have made more noise in the playoffs and might have had a chance to beat the Yankees. His situation is perfect in Minny so I think he stays.
