World Series MVP Hideki Matsui is a free agent, and contrary, to public opinion the Yankees should not resign him. He will be 35, pushing the door to 36 on opening day and will be pushing for a 3 year contract at the minimum but probably closer to a 5 year deal that will exceed the 13 million per year four year deal that just expired.
While he put up 28 home runs in 2009, that was the most he has put up in the past 5 seasons and will likely drop back down to the 20 margin. He also doesn't walk too much, and hasn't eclipsed 100 RBIs since 2007.
Finally, the primary reason the Yankees shouldn't resign him: They do not need another designated hitter. Matsui consistently played DH this year and will only further struggle in the field as he ages while players already under contract for upcoming seasons such as Jorge Posada will have to be confined to the position.
He is a good player, but the Yankees would be better served to take a guy who can indefinitely play the field for 4 seasons such as Matt Holliday or ignoring the position all together (as Nady is coming back next year) and signing another starter.

And he hit .222 against the Twins and .238 against the Angels. He had his career game in the world series, but do you want to pay for yesteryear? I thought we finally learned out lesson....

1.) You assume that just because somebody is an MVP of a 6 game series, they will repeat it in another clutch situation. How can you assume this?
Randy Johnson was the MVP of a 7 game world series and we signed him. How'd that work out? He was old, you say... my point in case!
2.) You gotta get to the world series first! .222 vs. Minnesota and .238 vs. Anaheim -- two teams the Yankees will probably have to go through again next year to get back to the fall classic.
(Never addressed this point before)
3.) Finally, signing him means we won't sign guys like Jason Bay or Matt Holliday, guys that will get similar contracts and are still under or on the better end of 30. Having Matsui at 40 or Holliday at 32. It won't even be a question by the end of Matsui's next contract...

They should sign Pettite, Damon and Matsui to the shortest contracts they can.

Sorry left, but you're not going to win this one. I already tried. To much pro-Matsui sentiment among Yankees fans.
They seem to think Matsui will sign a 1 year deal, which, if he would, I'd say sign him, but I think he'll be looking at a 3 year deal and given his injury history, this would be a mistake. Not to mention it locks up the DH position and you have no flexibility for Damon or Posada or A-Rod or anyone else to play DH without benching Matsui. He was only successful this year because he was a full-time DH and he still played less than 120 games.
If the Yanks are smart, they will make Posada an offer to be full-time DH, or at least most time. Then they'll resign Damon to a 2 year deal because he offers a lot more lineup flexibility, is more durable, and has performed just as well.
There is only one reason to re-sign Matsui... sentimentality.
