Giants need to draft a linebacker in round 1 next year.

Everyone thought their receivers would be their weak point, but Smith, Manningham and Nicks have all stepped up and actually give the NY Giants impressive depth at the position.

Their defensive line is still solid, and they do actually have some playmakers in that secondary but their lack of a consistent week in, week out Patrick Willis type tackler really hurts them as well as a truly reliable outside linebacker to help on runners and even provide assistance to Tuck and Osi.

I propose that middle linebacker should be their #1 pick this draft, and they should also make a run at Shawne Merriman.

Yes they could use help at the linebacker position, but they just drafted a linebacker in the 2nd round this year, Clint Sintim who is currently injured and already have Peirce, Boley, Clark, Blackburn, and Wilkinson, so for now they seem set at Linebacker. What they really need is help in the secondary, either at corner or safety. The injuries are mounting in the secondary and have no replacements.

Yes, but prior to this season, their 2 first round picks were spent on the secondary and neither looks like a bust.

Aaron Ross is a very good cornerback, and yes he's injured, but he does have the makings of a #1. Corey Webster is no slouch opposite him, and while I agree that depth there is a concern, all they really need is another nickleback veteran and a young kid to bring along to eventually replace Webster. No needs that warrant 1st round money.

Kenny Phillips is going to be a pro bowl safety by every scouts regards. Yes again, I'd like to add more depth but it's a 7 round draft. The Giants just need serviceable injury replacements a la what Indy has done with Bob Sanders.

However, using a 1st round pick as depth for young emerging stars? Seems dumb to me.

Boley, Clark, Blackburb, even Sintim. Where is the potential pro bowler? Pierce is good but nobody is confusing him with an all pro talent. As they are showing with their struggle to tackle, linebacker is their archille's heel as a football team.

Point to the secondary all you want, but most of McNabb's passes last week were 5-10 yards deep (the LB's responsibility) in zone coverage.

The linebackers are looking so bad because of the inability of the corners and safetys to stop anyone. Even in the games where the defense was thought to look good, the secondary failed. Even though Jamarcus Russel had multiple turnovers in the 44-7 games, it was his most efficient passing game for him this season. Brees embarrassed the secondary in New Orleans with a QB rating over 156, Warner made plays when he needed to, and McNabb like Brees got whatever he wanted having a QB rating over 140. The linebacking core has more potential right now, and better depth than the secondary. Boley has the potential to be a pro bowler after coming over from Atlanta and Blackburn as been very serviceable for the giants. Management is also very high on Gerris Wilkinson. I say secondary because there are some people that believe Kenny Phillips injury is a Bo Jackson type thing and he may not be able to play anymore. Secondary is more of the concern because they have only 1 legitimate player in the secondary right now in Webster. They are using way to many rookie free agents and roster castoffs from training camp to succeed right now.

Drew Brees makes a lot of secondaries look bad, and Kurt Warner and Donovon McNabb are no slouches either.

But what set the Giants up for all this was these short passes turned to long gains because of their inability to tackle.

Drafting another cornerback or safety will be the Jerry Reese admitting to the fans that their past first round picks have been busts.

Management can be high on Wilkinson but with Ross and Phillips, we have 2 potential pro bowl players who need to start. I'm all for picking help for the secondary in rounds 2-7, but I'm not paying someone five million per year to ride the bench.

It would not be a waste of 5 million dollars if the player will be helping the team. They need depth in the secondary and will not get by using undrafted rookie free agents and roster buts from other teams after the preseason. Right now they have tons of depth at the linebacker position which is one of the reasons the special teams is doing so well. The short passes you are talking about go on the secondary also. Look at the plays as recently as in the game today. The corners come up to make a one on one play against a running back or receiver, and the giants corners are not winning those battles right now. The losses of Ross and Phillips are exposing the little amount of depth that the Giants currently have in the secondary.

my thoughts exactly. A shutdown corner would do wonders for the team

They will not draft high enough to get a shutdown corner since if there is one in the draft, which does not happen very often, he will be gone by #15, which will be before the Giants pick.

when u pick as late as the Giants probly will, say 16th or later most of the upper-tier D-talent is gone. So u have to take best available. I do agree depending on who they pick up in FA their draft should defense heavy.
