I have to go with Notre Dame but I am open to any other school taking the "title". More talk about ND this and ND that. Is this their year?? One highly paid "Savior", aka coach, after another. Another year of unmet expectations. One great recruiting year after another and no results.

ND is irrelevant and has been for decades.

Anyone with their favorite team that is "Full of Itself" please feel free to jump in and vent your spleen. I am sure there are many contenders.

If you are trying to bash the history of Notre Dame bc of their recent struggles then you are just going for an easy win, banking on the anti-notre dame sentiment that is in the TDs.

I agree that ND is not a top tier team as they once were...but the FACT is that their HISTORY makes them a legendary program. Depending on how you count national championships they are either #1 ,2 or 3. More NFL players have come out of ND than any other college. Only 9 other schools have more active NFL players than ND.

They have had 7 heisman winners and one very awesome "Rudy" movie....plus another football movie featuring Ronald Reagan.

Does Boise State have a movie? How many current NFL players came out of Utah?

ND has the 2nd highest winning % alltime.

ND has the 3rd most wins alltime and more all americans than any other college.

Andin over 100 years.....only 13 losing seasons.

Notre Dame IS a legend when it comes to college football.
Are they are top team now? no.
But they are better than many. 9-3 in Weis' first 2 seasons w/ 2 bowl games.

I think you forget that ND gets so much TV coverage bc there is demand in the market for it.

Two things:
One I am not looking for an easy win in TD's. I use this as banter, nothing more. Certainly I like to win but more important is I like to argue about sports topics.
Two, I don't argue with ND's great history. But at what point does your history become just that... History.
Taking your argument and applying it to a different example, Rome and Athens have great history and many notable citizens, but they are no longer in the discussion of important cities. I would argue that ND has fallen into the same category of Rome and Athens, one time great but no longer relevant.
As far as TV rating go, the same argument holds true about Rome and Athens, great places to visit, full of history and charm. I think many viewers are looking at the past. Once in a while a ND game has significance but only because people are hoping for the resurrection of Notre Dame.
As far as great movies go, yeah ND has had some great movies about it. But I will take Gladiator over Rudy any day.

well your whole premise is about the LEGEND of Notre Dame.

they have a history 90% of college teams could only DREAM of having.

so you cant say they arent legendary...then only point to RECENT events.

the packers just lost to tampa bay...does that deminish their stroied history? are the packers not still legendary?

In terms of teams who are not as good as they think they are....where should we begin?

Iowa has lived all year on a wing & a prayer.

USC has been exposed as a very fast but weak team. I would bet they couldnt put up 20 pts on Tennessee

Ohio State slid into big games so often they expect to be able to do it every year.

How about TCU?
Who have they played this year?
NOBODY!
Was their signature win over the ACC top Clemson...the team that leads their conference but lost to Maryland!

You cant deny ND's legendary history by pointing to a recent letdown.

First of all, you STILL haven't picked another team, as in "Pick and Defend". But be that as it is may. My view of Notre Dame is that their arrogance and is exceeded by their lack of results in the last fifteen or twenty years.
They have refused to join the Big East football conference, although they play Big East in other sports like basketball. To me, that smacks of arrogance. So I think ND is "full of itself". They are the only college football that has a separate TV deal. It is my opinion that people watch in hopes that ND will lose. It is the network's problem that ND has failed to deliver a quality product.
ND is no longer the team to beat in college football. No longer the program by which all other programs are measured. Different then say the Yankees, love them or hate them, in pro sports they are the standard by which every other franchise is measured.
To me they were once a great program but many other programs have upped their game and left Notre Dame behind. Hence the title, "Legend in their own minds." Meaning no longer able to live up to expectations but refusing to acknowledge their obvious shortcomings.

ok dude. enjoy your pansey win.

ND has had only 13 losing seasons in over 100 years.

top 3 in alltime wins and win %

Yes, they have been in a slump...but they will end with a winning season and they had 2 back to back 9-3 seasons Weis' forst 2 years.

If you think they are supposed to be ranked # 1 every year you are crazy.

By your "logic" Alabama is a "legend in their own mind" bc they havent won it all since 1992.
Should we forget the six championships Bama won with Bear Bryant? Is Bama not another legendary football program?

There are MANY MANY MANY colleges that wish they have had Weis' record. 3 out of the past 4 years = winning records w/ 2 bowl games. (assuming they have a winning year this year)
By your logic if they arent a top 10 team they suck.

Lets compare your favorite teams's HISTORY to ND's.

And yes, its about the HISTORY when you talk about LEGENDS.

"ND is irrelevant and has been for decades"

Bold but still inaccurate comment..

I would go with Ohio St. Year after year they spout off about how great the Big 10 is and that they are at the top of that conference makes them great as well. Only to watch them get annihilated in non conference games and BCS bowl games.

November 8, 2009  11:51 AM ET

I'm not sure that anyone can top Notre Dame in this category.

Hahaha the legend lives on.... unfortunately.

Charlie Tuna believes in his own legend more than the Irish players believe in the ND legend. That being said it's hard to argue against your pick. Maybe FSU?

God has forsaken Nortre Dame

I would concede that "decades" of irrelevance may inaccurate, but I am going to allow myself some literary license. My intention is to generate some dialog. So far, only Ohio Stand Flor. State get a mention.

Yes, she has.
ND has gone downhill since it went co-ed. Those Irish Catholic boys have another outlet for all that pent-up energy.
LOL

Did right even pick a team?

November 8, 2009  01:37 PM ET

"but the FACT is that their HISTORY makes them a legendary program. "

ND blos.

No one cares what you did 20-30 years ago.

ND sucks. No one wants to go to Molestation University.

November 8, 2009  01:38 PM ET

"plus another football movie featuring Ronald Reagan.
"

Reagan Was a Dirt bag, In the NIxon mold.

November 8, 2009  01:43 PM ET

"And in over 100 years.....only 13 losing seasons."

How many in the last 10 years?

14-15 in Bowl games is not LEGENDARY.

It Sucks

I think they picked Ohio State???

QUOTE(#9):

No, actually, right didn't pick a team; they just bashed the opening argument but didn't issue a rebuttal (or pick another team)

regardless of their recent struggles and/or past history, it's hard to deny the basic argument - Notre Dame is a legend in their own minds, so I gotta vote left

November 8, 2009  02:01 PM ET

Thanks, I didn't notice that right didn't pick another school.
I had several in mind, being an ACC/SEC "fan", Clemson and Ole Miss came to mind followed by UNC and USoCarolina.
But they are more regional "Legends". Auburn and Pitt may get some "votes".

November 8, 2009  02:02 PM ET

i think left forgets that notre dame gets so much attention and tv coverage bc their games draw viewers. TV stations make billions off of advertising. They arent going to lose money airing ND games if there is a better option.

ND draws tv audiences NATIONWIDE moreso than a Boise vs Idaho game would.
More viewer watch it. go look at the ratings. im not saying the typical ND v Purdue game is BETTER than other games...but national televised games air the teams that draw the largest nationwide audience.

Not saying its right....just saying we shouldnt take away ND's past successes bc of charlie weis

There are a few that come close (but this is all based on recent history, of course):
Michigan and Ohio State
Texas always seems to be in the National Championship conversation, but seems to fall short quite a few time
AND...
how can you leave out USC and their annual early season fall-apart
anyone from the SEC?

November 8, 2009  02:16 PM ET

hey BS Patrol--
Why don't you take your bs and shove it? Reagan and Nixon had little in common on the issues. I know lots of punks like you. You start name-calling because what you know about political and world history you could write on a midget's thumnail.
