OK, by nonexistent I mean either the franchise no longer exists or the franchise still exists, but the team plays in a different city. List the top team from the MLB, NBA, and NFL, I'm not putting them in a particular order. This should be based on how good the teams were while they played in the city they are no longer in.

Minneapolis Lakers - NBA (1946-1959)

Baltimore Colts - NFL (1953-1983)

Milwaukee Braves - MLB (1953-1965)

Obviously, at least one change...but 2 would be preferable.

First of all, you do realize there is a professional sports league that plays in the US, is 30 years older than the NBA and had higher attendance levels than the NBA (despite smaller arenas!).

Yes, I am referring to the NHL, the National Hockey League! It merits inclusion in any such discussion and if any of the four should be left off, it is the NBA... the league with the lowest total attendance, lowest average attendance and shortest history. As such, I am ignoring your NBA selection and leaving it as is cause it is worthless.

MLB - Philadelphia Athletics (1901-1954)
5 100+ win seasons, 5 World Series titles, 9 Penants

NFL - Cleveland Browns v1.0 (1946-1995)
(This is a questionable selection as the current Browns are technically the same franchise but the team left town and thus it is a different version in most eyes)
14 10+ win seasons, 4 NFL titles, 11 Conference titles, 23 playoff appearances

NHL - Ottawa Senators v1.0 (1918-1934)
(Different entity than current Senators)
4 NHL championships (1 Stanley Cup), 8 Finals appearances

OK, first, way to take a TD and shape the rules your own way. So you don't even argue a topic I put up, and then get votes for putting something new into a TD I haven't had the chance to argue? Sounds cheap to me.

lets say Colts and Browns tie, and lets compare the Lakers and Senators. The Lakers played a few less seasons, so this is a fair comparison: The Lakers won 5 NBA championships, compared to the Senators' 4. The Minneapolis Lakers also featured arguably the most dominant player in NBA history, when you look at how much George Mikan changed the game of basketball through rule changes. The NBA had to modify the game simply to nulify his impact on the game...and it didn't really work. The Senators didn't have that kind of star power...also, the championship number is WAY skewed by the fact that there were only FOUR original teams, and more teams didn't join until the late twenties.

Based on the huge disparity of time(50 to 10 years, appx) a direct comparison shouldnt be used in the Braves/A's case. Also, the A's won 4 WS pennents in Philly, making them win the WS less often than the Braves. The Mil. Braves are the only team in MLB history to not have a losing season ever

What the hell are you complaining about? You asked for 2 of your original 3 to change and that is exactly what I did! Not my fault you randomly decided to ignore the NHL and I rightfully included it.

As for your NBA pick, I agreed with it cause I don't care enough about the sport to look into it... thus my saying I was "leaving it as is". Therefore, the argument becomes a comparison between the NFL and MLB franchises selected.

Baltimore v Cleveland
Colts: 222-194-7 (.533), 3 NFL championships, 1 Super Bowl
9 10+ win seasons in 31 (29.0%)

Browns: 374-266-10 (.583), 8 NFL Championships
14 10+ win seasons in 46 (30.4%)

Just how exactly are these two a wash? Brown v1.0 wins every category and its not even close.

Milwaukee v Philly
Braves: 1146-890-8 (.563), 1 World Series, 2 Pennants
0 95+ win seasons in 13 (0%)
1 season in 13 with win % better than .600 (7.7%)

A's: 3886-4248-79 (.478), 5 World Series, 9 Pennants
5 100+ win seasons in 54 (9.3%)
9 95+ win seasons in 54 (16.7%)
13 seasons in 54 with win % better than .600 (24.1%)

Again, the A's dominate. More worse season but far more better ones too. Milwaukee was mediocre, thats all.

Good luck to whoever gets this one!

Change NFL team to Cleveland Browns. There isn't an NFL team in Cleveland this season. Sorry, I shouldn't kick 'em while they are down. Guess the same could be said for my Pittsburgh Pirates.

Yea, at least the Browns have had a winning season recently (2007) and made the playoffs in recent history (1994). Hell, they even won that playoff game... the first of many for Belichick.

So because I don't change their basketball selection, a perfectly acceptable move since I changed the other two, I should be forced to lose?

Or is it more likely that you are getting a revenge vote for my destroying your lame NHL TD?

Somehow, I would wager its the latter. But to show you how little I care, I will go and vote for yo now.

University of San Francisco football team. They don't exist anymore. All the teams you've mentioned exist in that they were simply renamed, or they moved to another city.

November 9, 2009  12:53 PM ET

The Seattle Pilots.

Look it up folks, they were a MLB team.

They became the Brewers, right? I think they failed miserably...

There's a reason I didn't include the NHL...I'm from the state of hockey, so I know it well...but unfortunately, there are hardly any teams that have moved or gone away...outside of the Senators and North Stars. But that isn't much of an argument.

Ottawa Senators closed up shop in '34. They are an entirely different entity from the current Senators which only started up in the 90's ('92 I believe). Thus they meet your criteria.

Maroons.
Senators.
Nordiques.
Jets.
North Stars.
Whalers.
Flames.
Rockies/Scouts.
Golden Seals/Barons.
Americans.

That is ten franchises to choose from.

November 9, 2009  01:20 PM ET

Dallas Texans?!

Didn't they win a SB or NFL championship?

As much as I don't like hockey. I will respect right's argument which is alot better than left and vote for him.

November 9, 2009  01:21 PM ET

Bobby Orr Why do you say the old Senators only won 1 cup. They won 4.

1920
1921
1923
1927

November 9, 2009  01:27 PM ET

The Atlanta Braves were the Boston Braves to begin with.
The Kansas City Chiefs (one time Super Bowl champs) used to play in Texas.
The Detroit Lions used to play in Ohio. Yeah, they used to be good....in the 1950's.

"4 NHL championships, 1 SC" was taken from Wiki.

I assume the difference is that only the 1927 title was the standard SC win we know today... the other three titles were won against PCHA opponents and thus not equivalent to the current Cup.

Okay, you are telling us all of this why? B-R and its sister sites have all of this information readily available and I think it is common knowledge that the Braves were originally in Boston.

Okay. Thanks for the explanation.
