rudedog: 8-1 fumbling issue said 11/09, 04:18 PM
Atlanta trading Favre to Green Bay or Baltimore trading Elway to Denver
This is a tough one. However, I'm going with Favre to Green Bay.
In the trade, the Falcons sent Favre to Green Bay for a first round pick that was used on Tony Smith. But what obviously makes this lopsided is that Favre is arguably one of the best QBs of all time while Tony Smith did nothing.
Favre led the Packers to a SB ring and many playoff appearances. And he holds a couple records too, last thing I heard. Tony Smith finished with 330 yards for his career.
And what makes this trade great is that the ATL head coach said it'd take a "plane crash" for him to start Favre. Wonder what he thinks about that now?
What doesn't make the Elway's trade as lopsided is the circumstances. Elway was playing baseball and was threatening to stay in the MLB. Not wanting to pay a guy who was playing baseball, they traded him away. You can't blame them.
Good luck Jebus.

Ahh, I knew the "homer" in you would take the Brett.
I honestly have to go with the Baltimore Colts trading away John Elway to Denver. First off, John Elway was the #1 overall pick in 1983. Brett Favre was selected in the 2nd round of the 1991 NFL Draft.
Why the trade was made possible is because Favre threw no completions and 2 INT's in 4 pass attempts.. Imagine that, half his passes were intercepted.. The ATL HC Jerry Glanville said that because of two reasons: A) half of his passes were interceptions and B) Most people forget that the Falcons had QB Chris Miller who was just coming off a ProBowl season of his own.
Why the Colts trade was worse:
The Colts coming off a 0-8-1 season and their starting QB was Mike Pagel. Career Numbers for Pagel (49 TD passes, 69 INT's, 50.1 Completion % and a QB rating of 63.3)
The had the #1 overall pick and had a chance to land a Hall of Fame QB. Instead the trade him to Denver for QB Mark Herrmann, the rights to OL Chris Hinton and a 1st round pick in the 1984 draft that turned out to be steriod using OG Ron Solt.
Mark Herrmann had a 2-2 record with the Colts and had 2 TD's passes to go with his 13 INT's.

I'm leaving this site in style, riding high on my Vikings wagon.
Most people forget that the Falcons had QB Chris Miller who was just coming off a ProBowl season of his own.
Well, you can't rely say Miller was a franchise QB. He had 2 seasons over 3000 yards and finished with 87 TDs and 72 INTs. So going out and drafting a QB wasn't a terrible idea.
because Favre threw no completions and 2 INT's in 4 pass attempts.
I don't think giving Favre 4 pass attempts constitutes as giving him a shot at the offense. I know him and the HC were at odds, but he wasn't given a fair shot in ATL, so you can't say he wouldn't have become the great player there.
Now, for the Colts, I don't even understand why they drafted him. He was threatening to play baseball and was legitimate about it. Why waste the pick on Elway when you have people Marino or Kelly out there. And the fact that ATL only got one player while IND got 2 players and a pick make it more unfair. ATL got left with another RB while IND had another shot at getting a QB (which didn't fair to well either).
SaveMeJebus: 9-0 bring on BAL said 11/10, 10:48 AM
What really made this a bad trade was the fact that the Colts knew Elway would not play for them.. They could have gotten Eric Dickerson (#2 in 1983) and built the offense through him.
"Well, you can't rely say Miller was a franchise QB. He had 2 seasons over 3000 yards and finished with 87 TDs and 72 INTs. So going out and drafting a QB wasn't a terrible idea."
I am not saying, Miller was a franchise QB, but coming off a ProBowl season and he was entrenched as the starter he was more than capable.
The Favre trade almost had to happen. I mean in Atlanta Favre partied alot, he wouldn't show up to team events. Jerry Glanville was asked why he was always angry with Favre, and he said "You don???t have enough paper." It was evident that Favre, was acting like Ryan Leaf and therefore, Atlanta really only got what they could get.
As for the Elway trade, well trading for the 1st overall pick should get you more than a garbage QB and a steroid abusing lineman in Ron Solt.
"Now, for the Colts, I don't even understand why they drafted him."
That's my point. This was not just a really bad trade, it was a really bad draft pick.

Not coming back from this hole, so I'm not going to argue this.
Thanks for being my last TD for a while Jebus. Always had some great TDs with ya.

Choice for Right should have been left open, just saying it would have been more fun for this TD.

In 1986, the 76ers traded Moses Malone, Terry Catledge, Brad Daugherty, and 2 first round picks for Cliff Robinson, Jeff Ruland, and Roy Hinson.
More then 20 years later, I still think about that season and sigh.

The Colts had no choice but to trade Elway. He refused to play for them and was also drafted by the Yankees and threatened to go play for them if he wasn't traded to an NFL team he approved of.

Well, Vikings homers talking about bad trades really should be quiet lest the Herschal Walker for three lombardi trophies trade be brought up...oops, I guess I just did.

I'm a Denver fan, and with the Eli v. Rivers game that took place, a lot of things were said on the radio that I think is funny. I kept hearing Broncos fans (who I love) call in and complain about how what Eli Manning did was rude, and unacceptable and everytime, the DJ asked "so do you hate John Elway?" and they would just kinda stumble through some stuff. I'm glad that someone out there remembers that Elway refused to sign with Baltimore.

It is still a little too early to tell, but that Roy Williams trade has the potential to be one of the worst ever as well.

That's ridiculous. A first and a third round pick for a pro bowl receiver is hardly a bad trade. Whether or not Williams pans out in Dallas, the deal itself was exactly what the going rate is. Two firsts for Joey Galloway was FAR worse, but even that was no where NEAR one of the worst NFL trades ever.

Ricky Williams draft day trade.
The Saints give up
- All eight of their 1999 draft day picks
- 1st and 3rd rounder for the 2000 draft
The Saints received
- Moved from the 7th overall pick to the 5th overall pick and selected Ricky Williams who only played three seasons in New Orleans.

The Falcons only lost a draft pick. Indianapolis lost 2 first round picks (Elway and the following year 1st rd) Elway went public stating that he did not want to play for the Colts, but they still chose him so they could then trade away another 1st rd pick. Not too brilliant by the Colts...

Arguably at best. Let's remember that in nearly 20 years Favre has 1 Super Bowl win and 2 appearances as compared to Elway's 2 wins and 5 appearances. Also of note Favre ranks, let's see, oh thats right, first in all time interceptions. You want to talk career stats, let's not forget that little gem.
Given the choice, I'd take Elway any day of the week and twice on Sunday over Favre. And I'm a Chargers fan, so Broncos bias isn't working here...

The Colts had no choice, they had to give Elway up. He was a having a good baseball career and said he wouldn't play for them. What would you do in the situation? There was no way of getting him on a football field

Yes favre trade worse based on fact that elway would not play for colts--they had no choice, they were lucky to get anything. but stupid of them to draft him in the first place, that's some high stakes bluffing

If you knew anything about the Favre situation you would know that he had ZERO chance in atlanta. He had a HEAVY pain pill addiction, did NOT get along with his coaches or teammates at all. During his first film session he stood up and yelled for everyone to hear that "Our QB is awful I'll be starting by week 2"
The thing is that Atlanta had no chioce but to trade Favre, had he stayed in Atlanta even he says that he couldn't handle the big city, and would have washed out of the league quickly.
