At this point in the season, I believe Dan Haren has been extraordinary enough to deserve the honor. His line of work thus far has been stunning, a minute 2.33 ERA, and a 10-3 record with the offensively inept A's.
Zoolander said 07/19, 08:24 PM
Haren has been outstanding this season. However, I feel Josh Beckett is more deserving. He is 12-3 with 100 strikeouts thus far, and though his ERA is higher, at 3.35, he has another edge over Haren: his team is contending. Beckett has powered the Red Sox to first place, and a seven game lead over the Yankees. Though, admittedly, the Sox have struggled of late, they still hold a 7.5 game lead over the second place Yanks, the biggest lead in the Majors, thanks in part to Beckett's stellar play. On the other hand, the A's are 11.5 back in the West and 10.5 back in the wildcard. Beckett is deserving not only for pitching well, but for enabling his team to win.
Saltalamacchia for President said 07/19, 11:22 PM
You have to understand Beckett has been excellent this year, but he has a vicious Red Sox offense fighting alongside him. Meanwhile, Haren has zilch offense to defend him. Another sign of Haren's superiority: Beckett has had five outings in which he's allowed 4+ER, Haren just one. Haren has pitched 25 more innings than Beckett. Oh, and your 100 K thing is moot because Haren has four more. And you have to ask yourself-how much further back would the A's be without Danny Haren?
Zoolander said 07/19, 11:33 PM
I do understand that Beckett has an offense. But are we going to penalize him for that? He has still pitched very well; its not like he gives up 10 runs and the Sox score 11 to give him the win. Beckett is also very consistent; he has given forth a good outing nearly every game this season. Also, would the Red Sox be in first without Beckett? If Beckett was not on the staff, that would leave them with Matsuzaka (who has potential, but has struggled of late), an aging Tim Wakefield, a wildly inconsistent Julian Tavarez, and an injured Curt Schilling. Doesn't seem too good. And like I said, Beckett's team is still in contention. If two guys are performing around the same level (which they are) I would give it to the guy who helps his team win. And, if we are nitpicking each stat, Beckett has given up fewer hits and walks than Haren.

I'm not penalizing Backett for picking a great team to pitch for. I'm saying that would Beckett be 12-3 with the A's offense. No, rather something along the lines of 9-6. Haren has the lower ERA by more than a full run, Haren has pitched more, and Daniel J. Haren is the American League Cy Young award winner.
Zoolander said 07/19, 11:49 PM
But now youre saying Beckett is a subpar pitcher, which he is clearly not. Even if you feel Haren will win the Cy Young, you can't discredit Beckett; he is among the leagues finest pitchers, regardless of whether he wins the Cy Young. If you recall, he was good on Florida as well, so the Red Sox are not the singular reason behind his success.
Even if Haren has pitched more, it just means he has more wear on his arm. Beckett gets 8.2 strikeouts per game to Harens 6.9, Beckett has allowed 3 HRs to Haren's 11, and no one is the Cy Young winner yet :).

Yeah, but Beckett has competition on his own team from Dice-K. His numbers are Cy Young yet, but he is 11-6 with 125 K's. He's also a big reason the Red Sox are up 7 games in their division.....
Santana with 2.65 ERA and 140 K's. Twins are only 6.5 out of the wildcard and still have a slight chance....

Cole, i propose we have a 1-1 pitching duel, Tavarez against Ponson, whoever wins is the AL Cy Young

what does your team competing have to do with a cy young?

I think this is a debate best left for later, since no reasonable argument for any pitcher winning the Cy Young has won yet. Right now it's too close to call.

ummm, it would be a HR derby/ pitching duel. So Ponson would hit against Tavarez and vice-versa, and if that did not work, then they could always box, or play polo or monopoly, to decide the winner

yes, scrabble, but Julian Tavarez seems to be mentally retarded in some aspects of life, so could we make it Scrabble Junior?
