OATTA FINAL 4: If you could choose any MLB player, besides A-Rod, at this point to start a new franchise, who would it be?

To start my franchise, my first guy's gotta be youngish, proven, versatile, popular, and dynamic.

You might as well just say it's gotta be Albert Pujols.

Look at his numbers. He's walking credibility with a captain's "C," and he's a World Champion. He's my 3-hitter for the next 10 years, if not longer, and the centerpiece of my franchise. We'll have enough challenges, I need someone dependable, offensively and defensively.

The Cardinals MVP first baseman is an every day player, and at the age of 27, he has 272 career home runs, a career batting average of .331 (third highest among active players), and 818 RBI. His 1.045 OPS is the second highest among active players, and fifth-best ever.

No player except possibly A-Rod has a better all-around game that Pujols - and A-Rod is four years older. Pujols has played outfield, third base and first base in his time with the Cardinals, which is essential for my team. He won a Gold Glove last year at first base, and finished second in the MVP balloting.

I'll even save everyone the annoying Chris-Berman-given nickname.

Albert is no doubt a great choice. He is a great player, but I have to go with Jose Reyes. And here is why.

-He is 3 years younger the Albert, so you know you will have him around a little longer.

-Reyes presents a better threat on the base paths, this guy will lead the league in steals for the next 10 years with no close competition.

-Finding a solid SS is a harder than a solid 1B. Pretty much anyone that can hit and can't run can play 1B. It is where you can stick an old slugger, or where you can put a young guy with struggles in the field.

-My largest reason for this selection is a number 10,062,813 to be exact. that is the difference in the pay between your guy and mine. Imagine the talent you can get with $10 million? We say that this is a new franchise take a look at a team like Tampa, Albert would eat up over half of your expenses. save some cash for the rest of the team.

So overall i say Reyes is....
-younger
-less expensive
-plays a more valuable position
-has more speed (more fun to watch.)

Speed is more fun to watch than power? Are you sure? Finding ANY player to hit .331 with 48 HR and 139 RBI is not easy, regardless of position. Since Pujols is the only proven player who does that (who is eligible for this TD), I'm not seeing your self-anointed edge.

Guess what? I don't have time to develop every player every game. My team is likely to be shiite, and I need a guy to drive runners in, not a guy to run 90 feet to be stranded at second by some 19 year old who should be in Double-A.

You only seem to have two things over Pujols. Your boy can take second base with the best of them, but Pujols hits for a considerably better average, and gets on base far more than Reyes does. I could give an Alan Ruck if he can steal second base. I want a guy to get there with his bat, not his legs, and power costs money.

I don't need to bring up the power numbers, but since you brought up contracts, you obviously aren't thinking long-term. If you think Reyes is going to get paid $400k a year, you've been breathing in the Shea Stadium bathrooms too long.

Passing on power because of money...you???re running a NEW team, not the Royals.

Well to clear that up, Reyes makes a little more than 400K. And since we are staying with the money issues. We are talking about a NEW FRANCHISE, so your budgett is around 20-30 million. Albert's 12.9 Mil will eatup about half of that. So yes he can hit 48 HR, but they will all be solo shots.

Now Reyes is no slouch when it comes to HR's he hit 19 last year. this guy will give you .300+ 15-20 HR, and 60+ Steals every year. Albert can only match 2 of the three (he has 1 SB this year.)

Also, while Albert is great he doesn't stand out as much as he once did. I can find his power for a fraction of the price with a Ryan Howard or a Prince Fielder, and still have money left over for some pitching. Show me someone that can do what Reyes does FOR A FRACTION OF THE PRICE. (I know Hanley is comparable, but not much less.)

Now when it comes to fans, what is more fun to watch a HR every 3 or 4 games, or a diving catch, stretching a base, and 2 SB a game.

The X factor here is the speed, reyes on 2B means anything out of the IF scores him, Pujols on second means that a hit moves him to 3B.

Pujols is great but my money (10 million less of it) is on REYES

Ok, so under the business model of your team, your players never want contract extensions? That must be nice. In reality, though, all of the players you mentioned will get Pujols money soon. Reyes' money may not come off the top next year, but the guy's gonna get paid, and right quick (pun intended).

Building a team is a marathon, not a sprint (again, pun intended). This comes down to an investment. If both are going to cost you the bulk of your total salary, the smart choice is Pujols for the next 10 years for $140 million for a fledgling franchise that needs to sell jerseys over the speedy leadoff hitter who is less than Pujols in every stat except stolen bases - one of the most overrated statistics in sports.

That's my team's big thing. In our first year, we aren't going to compete. I want to put a.sses in seats, and jerseys on backs. Pujols is beloved by everyone, and he's the best all-around player available. If a player hitting a home run once every three or four games is less exciting than a Web Gem, ask fans in Philly and Milwaukee why they are watching their teams right now.

Thank you, and please vote for the best argument. Long live the OATTA!

I know you are trying to play it down, but the money is an issue. New franchises have little start up money, and a small fan base, so spending 12.9 Million on 1 player is a little ridiculous. Reyes will want big money, but he will want that new contract about the time that you have a little more money. Lets take last years numbers and see who is really worth the money.

Reyes ($ 2.8Mil)
.300
19 HR
64 SB
30 2B
17 3B
122 R
(You can???t keep this guy in 1B.)

Pujols ($12.9Mil)
.331
49 HR
7 SB
33 2B
1 3B
119 R (41% of the time he drove himself in)

The largest thing too look at here is that Reyes scores RUNS! Last I checked you win games by scoring runs.

You may think that Pujols is better, and people can argue either way. But, the point of this TD is to look at this from a GM perspective, and as a GM I don???t see Pujols as 4 ?? times the player Reyes is.

Here is a list of what I could do with that extra $10 million
CF Sizemore (916K)
2B Wright (1.2 Mil)
1B Fielder (415K)
LF Holiday (4.4 Mil)
SP Haren (2.25 Mil)
C Martin (387K)
CP Papelbon (425K)
(9.9 Mil total)

I get all of that while you only have Pujols. Still seem like he is worth it?

Sorry, I missed it.

I did! I was going to say something last night, but it looked like everyone was gone. Does he think he can just rebuild after his inbox was hit dead-center with a WOD? Covert ops this time...we'll hit him again...
