Fannation Fraternity League- Week 4- What is the worst sports gambling scandal in the last 30 years?
kentuckyfan1 said 07/25, 06:58 PM
A gambling scandal leaves a huge mark on any game that it affects. It is a very serious form of disrespecting the game. There are several occurances in sports history in which players and coaches have been banned from the game and given severe penalties as a result of gambling.
None of these incidents are more pronounced, however, especially within the last 30 years, as the Pete Rose betting scandal when he was managing the Cincinnati Reds. This particular scandal was the worst of its kind in three decades for these reasons:
1. Pete Rose was a hall-of-fame player, and still is. However, although he should be in the Hall of Fame, this scandal prevented him from doing so, causing still one of the most controversial sports topics today.
2. Not only did he leave a big dent on the entire sport, but he also risked the integrity of the game by betting on his own team.
3. The scandal is in general considered one of the most embarrasing to the sporting world. Here you have a manager who leads the game in base hits, and then he goes and bets on the game, causing him, one of the greatest of all time, to be banned from the sport he loved for good.

You are right, kentuckyfan, gambling scandals do leave marks on any games it affects. But the worst in the last 30 years actually happened last year, in 2006. The Italian Football Federation found out that 4 of their top teams were fixing matches. Could you imagine if Phoenix, San Antonio, Cleveland, and Detroit were all fixing matches in the playoffs this past year? Well, that's what happened in Italy for their top pro league.
But what makes this scandal even worse for Italian soccer was that they were just recovering from another scandal involving fixing matches that took place in 2000. The team that won the title that year, Juventus, had it taken away from them. That's bad, right? But then they were sent down from Serie A to Serie B (imagine an MLB team being sent down to AAA). The other three teams involved (Lazio, AC Milan, and Fiorentina) stayed in Serie A but all of them were given points penalties for the following season.
Then guess what? They found out another Serie A team, Reggina, were fixing matches as well. They were fined and given a points penalty. All the individuals involved were fined and/or suspended.

Before I argue any further, and I know that you're argument is probably fine, but could you explain to me how this is a gambling scandal?
Also, I still believe that the Pete Rose betting scandal made more of an impact on the world.
It opened up eyes and made people wonder how often this was happening and what other players and staff were doing the same thing world-wide.
Also, it caused one of the greatest baseball players of all time not to get into the Hall of Fame, setting up a major controversy that is still big in sports today. No other gambling scandal in the last 30 years has made so much of an impact on its sport.
It risked the integrity of the game of baseball. The Italian Soccer League may have taken a blow from that scandal, but it didn???t risk the integrity of the entire sport, just that league. Pete Rose single-handedly made people question the sport, making this the worst gambling scandal in recent history.
I???m not sure how the whole Italian thing was a gambling scandal, but what I do know is that a few teams getting pushed down to the bottom of the league isn???t as big as an entire world-wide sport taking a major blow due to gambling.
G.O.A.T. said 07/26, 08:51 AM
I'm pretty sure that Pete Rose's scandal didn't effect the baseball leagues in Japan or Cuba? No, it didn't. There is no one scandal that affects the entire sport worldwide. At least, I don't know of one that had happened. Pete Rose was one person. Now think of FIVE teams that were involved.
Now I will explain to you how it is a gambling scandal. They were fixing matches that players were betting on to make money. That's how it was a gambling scandal. I'm sorry, I probably should have explained that better.
Points taken away, fines, and suspension weren't the only things. Maybe some of you remember this. They had to play some of their home games behind closed doors. This greatly affected the league. They just played soccer matches with no crowd! And you know this as well I as do, the fans for home teams in soccer are crazy to say the least. This was terrible for the teams. Juventus had to play the most with no crowd (3).Also, the general director of Juventus was banned 5 years with the Italian football president wanting a ban for life. That was a very, very harsh punishment. One ref involved in the scandal was banned 4 years from football.
kentuckyfan1 said 07/26, 03:27 PM
I think that it affected the entire baseball world, once again, because it caused people to see worldwide that these things actually happen. It caused baseball to be looked at more skeptically, and ultimately changed the criteria to get into the Hall of Fame in any sport, did it not?
The Pete Rose incident not only shook up the way that baseball is viewed, but also how it is played. Since then, the league and the fans have been more and more suspicious of players, and it's hard to find a player that has never been a part of any kind of scandal in their career. Pete Rose is living proof that a player can still be great and be a part of a terrible scandal in the sport. Who knows? Maybe this led to many other scandals such as Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, Gary Sheffield, and more baseball scandals related and unrelated to performance-enhancing drugs.
Either way, the Pete Rose betting scandal was something that shook baseball and the sports world from the ground up, even more so than any European Soccer League scandal.
G.O.A.T. said 07/26, 03:58 PM
I think in today's sports' world, everyone is suspicious. They almost have to be with the way everyone is so money-obsessed. All sports are looked at skectically.
Did you ever hear of such a scandal that caused the teams to not allow anyone to come to the stadium and watch the game? That is the first I have ever heard of something like that.
Juventus, who was the team that won the title, is also living proof that a player or a team as a whole can be at the center of a major gambling scandal. And Pete Rose and the steroids scandal in baseball today are no way linked to one another. One is just to make money. The other is to become better at their respective sport. They're completely different.
The 2006 Serie A Scandal shook up the entire world except the United States of America. They were the only ones, and the reason being? About 85% of Americans could care less about soccer even if it is some huge scandal. So, yes, it did shake up the entire world excluding the US. But Pete Rose's only shook up baseball in America. It in no way affected the game of baseball in Central America and Asia.

The current NBA scandel has the potential to be the worst ever!
We are talking about an OFFICIAL who's very job is to protect the integrity of the game and enforce the rules. Once that trust is broken, it is extremely hard to repair. Players and coaches cheating is one thing, officials and entirely different matter. Players and coaches can only affect the game from one side or the other, an official has the ability to affect anything and everything about the outcome of a game or a series of gamers.

The scandel with the NBA official is about gambling, why else would you shave points?
But as far as the TD, i looked and there was nothing about a US scandel. SO i have to say GOAT has this one right now. Now i'll give KyFan a chance to come back. So i'll hold off a bit on my vote here.

Well, no it doesn't say anything about a US scandal, but I took gambling to mean betting, something involving money. Otherwise, I could have picked a lot of better ones.

However, I voted GOAT because he had the better argument here. I'm confused about what exactly "gambling" means, though.

I agree with you trueblue...even though you voted against me, I'm confused about it all, too. I had originally had an argument about the Olympic Boxing match, but then changed it because it didn't have to do with gambling, but I can't see how this does, either.

Gambling has to involve betting and some party receiving a large amount of money from it. Pete Rose got money from his. The people involved in the Serie A scandal got theirs. But in the end, all of them lost their money.

The only reason to fix games, shave points or tamper with games in any way is due to gambling! Donaghy was paid to affect scores in accordance to point spreads so that gamblers knew which way to bet. The soccer teams in Italy fixed games so that gamblers could make money, the White Sox players of 1919 were paid for the same reason.
And let me also say, that nobody outside of the USA could care less about Pete Rose, his gambling issues or whether or not he gets elected to the HOF. Soccer is huge everywhere in the world but here in the USA so I would have to agree that Goat is correct in saying that his example is a worse scandal, never mind the fact that 4 complete teams not an individual was envolved.

[MOH] Coach is right. There would be no reason to fix matches if they weren't gambling on those matches. Please, if you have a reason let me know because I don't think there is one.

Not true. The Black Sox scandal was not about money. Neither was the USA vs. Russia game, or the Jones Jr.-Hun fight.

The Black Sox Scandal wasn't about money? What was it about? Also, the USA-Russia was about trying to make their country look good. I'm not too informed about the Jones Jr.-Hun fight though.

It was about money, just not about gambling! Just like this.

Well, you said it was not about money. And how is getting soccer players and referees to fix matches to bet on them and make money not about both money and gambling?
