Once they dump Kei Igawa and pick up a fifth starter they will be a lot better. with the emergence of Shelly Duncan who they should give the full-time first base job too they shouls do much, much better in the second half. The Red Sox don't have the same hittinf from top to bottom with David Ortiz struggling and Manny Ramirez having a below average season. They also have the distraction of Curt Schilling running his mouth non stop and are relying on a very young rotation that isn't proven in the postseason. George Steinbrenner will do whatever it takes to win and could acquire a big name such as mark texeriea before the deadline. I think they have a very big chance to make a huge push and make it deep into the playoffs and probably end up in the world series like they have grow accustomed to.
Steelercooz said 07/28, 07:52 AM
With less than four days until the trade deadline, and so many teams still theoretically in the hunt, it's not likely the Yankees will be able to land the mega-star they are prone to do at this time of the year. Teams just aren't willing to part with good players this year as they have been in the past.
Their bullpen is among the weakest in baseball, and their starting pitching has been inconsistent enough over the first half of the season (although it has improved as of late) to make up the eight games they trail the Red Sox by, or the five games they trail Cleveland in the wild card.
Needless to say, it's a tall order to suggest the Yankees are going to win the World Series. It would take a 2006-Minnesota Twins-like stretch run to get back into contention. And you know why the Twins were able to overcome a 13-game deficit last year? They had a shut-down bullpen. According to most reports this morning, it doesn't seem likely the Yankees will be able to land any significant bullpen help, or another power guy to bat behind A-Rod (Jayson Stark reports Mark Teixiera is likely going to Atlanta, and Eric Gagne comes at too steep of a price if he isn???t going to close).
Tyrone Biggums said 07/28, 05:10 PM
their bullpen is not as weak as you make it out to be. brian bruney has a 3.20 ERA, luis vizcaino has 8 wins, ron villone is 2-0 with a 3.20 ERA There weakest member is kyle farnsworth who has a 4.24 ERA but despite that he has only lost one game. Scott proctor eats up innings but he does have five losses and mariano riveria has been lights out lately allowing runs in only two of his last 16 appearances. How can you say that this bullpen is one of the worst in baseball.
Steelercooz said 07/28, 05:35 PM
And they're trying to deal both Farnsworth and Proctor, but aren't going to be able to for the same reason I listed earlier - the trade market is down because none of the terrible teams have any pitching, and none of the best players are on really bad teams. No one is really dealing, except for the Rangers with Teixiera, but the only way the Yankees are getting any quality addition at first or in the bullpen is to deal Hughes or Chamberlain, and that ain't happenin'.
No bullpen = no playoffs = no World Series.
Tyrone Biggums said 07/28, 06:28 PM
What is wrong with the first baseman they have right now. shelly duncan could make a big impact and andy phillips is performing pretty well. They don't absoloutley need Texeira but he would help their team a ton. Chamberlain and Hughes don't need to be traded, they could call chamberlin up now and hughes once he comes off the DL. Chamberlain could replace farnsworth or proctor and hughes could take the spot of kei igawa. they can fix the bullpen from within their farm system and play deep into october.
Steelercooz said 07/28, 06:46 PM
Wait, if Teixiera would help a ton, why don't you seem to think anything is wrong with their first basemen? We're off the subject now, this isn't about what's wrong with the Yankees...well, it kind of is. There's plenty wrong with this team, and they really cannot fix anything the same way they've done in the past. If they are going to win this year, it's going to have to be with their current roster, and I think they dug too deep of a hole to think they can make it up with that inconsistent of a bullpen.

The Yankees have a chance close the gap in the AL East to be within 3-4 games by the time they play the Red Sox in late-August.. realistically looking at their schedule. However, their starters are going to need to become consistent, and they need to land a bullpen pitcher before the trade deadline is up. They are intent on getting Gagne, but I'm not sure if they have the right price to pay. Rumor is they want Melky Cabrera, and he's been so key for the Yankees. The Yankees definitely won't give up Hughes or Chamberlain either, so if they are going to get Gagne, they better find a good trade to make. I hope they will be able to give up either Farnsworth or Proctor and maybe a minor-leaguer or two for Gagne.. but it doesn't seem likely.

First the Yankees have to find a way to get the wild card, because the Sox are winning the division. The Yankees don't have a World Series team, especially with the other teams in the AL.

thats a foolish statement kaplan ... the yankees might be making a push right now ,but realistically they could not play any worse than they did earlier this year .They have ZERO chance at the wildcard, and to think that they are going to overtake the division lead over the redsox with the yankee's pathetic pitching staff is absurd. You would of had a better arguement suggesting they MIGHT make the playoffs

IRON CURTAIN does not necessarily endorse this team as a World Series contender, but does reserve the right to place that endorsement on this team, or any other team, at any time it chooses.

It's just out there to cover Niatruc Nori Corporations from any potential accusations of bias. Plus, we can have fun deciding to endorse whatever team we want, sort of like the politician who loses in the primaries.

First off the Yankees do not have a world series team. they have weaknesses in all aspects of there team- rotation, bullpen, defense, inconsistensy in there linup. Though they have been playing well of late and gained a couple games on the Red Sox, they just dont have that good of a team. Also theey have beeen playing bad teams (Royals, D- Rays, Orioles). There pitching is very inconsistent. Clemens hasnt lived up to the hype. There lineup is stacked but no pitching. they have no bullpen. no deal is going to get done for a star either. Texiera is pretty much a Brave now anyway. The Red Sox have great pitching (rotation and bullpen) and an above average linup. Ortiz and Manny havnt had great seasons and they are still in first place. Schilling is on the DL and will be back and should be a HUGE upgrade. Even IF the Yankees were to make the playoffs somehow, they would lose in the first round to whomever that would play. they might be the 7th best team in the AL, thats it. The Yankees dynasty is over. There team is a bunch of players who were once great but are at the end of there careers. Damon, Matsui, Giambi, Abreu, Clemens, Rivera. its over face it.

Can I just add that just because the Yankees are the topic, that doesn't mean the antithesis of the argument is whatever the Red Sox are doing?
Boston is not the only reason the Yankees won't be in the World Series. The Red Sox bullpen is not the only reason the Yankees won't be in the World Series. Detroit, Anaheim and Cleveland are just as guilty of this.
