1. Brian Dawkins

2. Ed Reed

3. Sean Taylor

4. Roy Williams

5. Darren Sharper

Okay, yet another Philly Homer with that top pick. So, let's begin by putting them IN ORDER with REASONS:

1) Ed Reed: He is a consensus No. 1 SAFETY in today's game. He beats out Polamalu, Wilson, etc. He is a ballhawking, turnover machine. He is an EXCELLENT cover SAFETY and is also good in run support. Many SAFETIES in today's game are usually only good at one aspect or another, much like Roy Williams who gets burned deep every three plays, but can stuff the run as well as a DT.
2) Adrian Wilson: I???m going to go a different way from most with my second pick. Wilson has been an unnoticed player in Arizona over the last few years, but has produced great numbers. He finally made his first Pro Bowl last year and it was WELL deserved. Wilson is a pretty good run stopping safety and can cover better than a lot of safeties. Like Ed Reed, I???ve chosen him at number two because of his covering abilities coupled with his run stopping skills; a dangerous combination for a safety.

Okay, well, I only got through two of five guys, so I???ll have to wait until my next argument to finish up.

Andrian is good but sean taylor lead the league in tackles last year and roy williams was first in inceptions for safties. yea i should of put adrian or polamalu instead of sharper but i still like my picks

Sean Taylor ('Skins fan here) is a great safety and had 114 tackles last year, but he DEFINITELY didn't lead the league in tackles. Zach Thomas and London Fletcher had more tackles than Taylor; they were the top two in tackles.

Now back to the rankings:

3) Troy Polamalu: I was tempted to go with Sean Taylor, but I'll save him for fourth or fifth. Troy Polamalu aka The Missile is a speedy safety, who has incredible hitting skills and punishes opponents; whether it be a running back making a sweep out of the backfield or a wide receiver attempting to go over the middle, Polamalu will put a hurting on them. This guy FLIES around the field. He is about as fast as Ed Reed, but his cover skills aren???t quite as good and he gets burned deep every so often. But his in the box abilities more than make up for his small deficiencies in pass coverage unlike Roy Williams.
4) Sean Taylor: He is feared by many and looks to hit others without worry for his or his teammates concern. He is better than Roy Williams in coverage and just as good maybe better in run stopping. He is a playmaking safety who causes A LOT of fumbles.

SAFETIES...learn to f*cking spell...

July 27, 2007  09:35 PM ET

Sorry buddy... that list is so way off it's criminal. I will assume the list is NOT in order since B Dawk is no where near the best safety in the league. My list is not in order..

1. Ed Reed
2.Troy Polamalu
3. Adrian Wilson
4. Sean Taylor
5. B Dawk

July 27, 2007  09:40 PM ET

July 27, 2007  09:41 PM ET

Even eagle hater wouldn't put Williams in his top 5..... so slow it's criminal

July 27, 2007  09:41 PM ET

Do you really want it that bad? I'll decline it if you really want it that badly...

July 27, 2007  09:42 PM ET

Bob Sanders was hurt most of last season, but he is a hard hitter.

July 27, 2007  09:47 PM ET

Ben, take it and don't be a jerk. It's your obligation to whip his a.s.s.

(yes, that's a joke)

July 27, 2007  09:48 PM ET

(p.s. thanks for the spelling shout-out. It's much appreciated)

July 27, 2007  09:57 PM ET

I wasn't being a jerk, I was being sincere. I don't care...I just saw the Philly Homerism and jumped all over it.

Also, no problem. If you look at my argument, you'll see that I CAPPED SAFETY everytime I spelled it. I'm tired of people misspelling it...

July 27, 2007  10:09 PM ET

Calm down, Eagle Hater. Iron shake Curtain.

July 27, 2007  10:15 PM ET

SAFETIES. LEARN TO SPELL. I don't want to have to throw off my ranting schedule.

Anyway, Dawkins is definitely not the best safety in the league. Maybe 4 or 5 years ago, but not now. He's definitely Top 7, maybe Top 5. But not the best.

GAH HOMERS!

July 27, 2007  10:18 PM ET

CONTINUATION OF MY SECOND ARGUMENT:

He also has the kind of speed needed for his position and as he gains experience he will only become better both in coverage in run stop.

And that's the end of my second argument...

July 27, 2007  10:25 PM ET

Phillyphan, even I can see the homerism in this.

July 27, 2007  10:32 PM ET

I can't argue...he is not arguing back!!! This b*stard better finish this damn throwdown and take the loss like a man...

July 27, 2007  11:00 PM ET

Roy Williams is not a top five safety. He can't cover at all.
The best safeties are(in order):
1. Ed Reed
2. Troy Polamalu
3. Sean Taylor
4. Adrian Wilson
5. Brian Dawkins

EaglesFan, hurry the hell up...You keep making new throwdowns, yet aren't finishing even 75% of them...
