They may not win championships, but they are the best regular season team there is. They had a great season last year (Dallas just had a better one) and a good record the year before despite missing Amare Stoudemire. Three years ago they had the best record in the NBA. No reason why they won't have the best this year. Nash already said he is hungrier for a ring than ever since he has already hinted that he will be retiring after his remaining three years are up on his contract.

They have the perfect lineup: Nash, Bell/Barbosa, Diaw/Jones, Marion, and Amare. They also have pretty good rookie talent coming in with DJ Strawberry and Alando Tucker which gives them more depth. D'Antoni knows how to lead his team. He can get them a 60- or 65-win season next year.

I think Dallas (who is probably the next choice) will not get the best record for the reason that Golden State showed the blueprint for everyone on how to beat the Mavs, starting with shutting down Dirk. He was exposed in the postseason this past year.

Also, almost every year Phoenix has a breakout player or a player who provides an enormous spark off the bench. The Phoenix Suns will definitely have the best record.

I will go with the Mavs. They had the best record last year, and I do not expect that to change. They have the great play from Dirk, and the underrated star Howard. Howard made the All-Star team with help from Stern, but he definitely should have been voted in. He averaged 18 ppg last year to go along with 6.8 rebounds. He is coming into his own.

They have the best role players in the game right now. Big men like Erik Dampier and Diop know their roles, and they perform great on defense. They have good shooting with Austin Croshere and Devean George.

The point guard position is definitely a strong point. Jason Terry is a bonafide stud at point guard. His shooting is great, and he has great leadership. Devin Harris is very talented also. The Mavs will have the best record in the NBA. I say 63 wins.

The Mavericks were completely exposed by the Golden State Warriors. They have a 3-time returning MVP (for the record, Nash should have won it), Sixth Man of the Year, 2 First-Team All-NBAers, 1 First-Team All-Defense, and another (Marion) who finished 4th in Defender of the Year yet failed to make the first or second team. They also have a past Coach of the Year on the sidelines.

Dampier, Diop, Croshere, and George are NOT better than Bell, Barbosa, and Jones. They would blow them out of the gym.

I don't care how strong your point guard position is. The Suns have the best in the League right now. Starting with Nash, the reigning 3-time MVP (for those that missed the beginning, he should have won it this past year). He is the best point guard in the game right now without a doubt. Also, they have Boris Diaw who plays like a point guard out there. Also, Barbosa and Banks sometimes run the point. Terry and Harris are definitely not better than the Suns' point guards.

The fast-break offense that Phoenix runs seems to wear out by the end of the year. The Mavs and Suns have made little moves since last year, so I don't think that there will be much change. The Mavs had a bad series. They still have gotten farther than the Suns. It isn't like the Suns are the best playoff team either. They also have a great coach in Avery Johnson. He relates to the players the best, and he helps them play to their fullest. I still say the Mavs.

Half of what you just said pertains to the playoffs and we are talking about the best regular season team. They haven't run out of gas in the regular season yet, they only start to get tired in the playoffs.

The Mavericks didn't have a bad series, their flaws were exposed greatly. You can have a bad game, or even 2 bad games in a row. But a good team will bounce back in a long 7-game series. They didn't and that showed how they can be beat even if you don't have as much talent as they do.

It really is irrelevant to this topic that Dallas has gotten further in the playoffs than the Suns considering we are talking about the regular season. What do you mean, "he relates to his players best and helps them play to their fullest?" He yells more than most of the coaches in the NBA. He is a hard*ss coach and D'Antoni is a players' coach. If anything, D'Antoni would be the coach who relates to his players best.

The Suns have the players and coaching staff that is needed to win the regular season. There isn't a team that in the past three years has been in the top of the conference with their records. Their worst year was a year they were missing one of their best players.

Avery Johnson was just a player a few years ago. He isn't that much older, and he has experience playing with the team. The Mavs had an off series. Everyone has one. The Suns, Spurs, Lakers, everyone in the West has had one. The little changes in the West will most likely lead to a very low difference in the standings. I will go with the Spurs for the best record in the NBA.

My vote goes to GOAT. The points he made were better than yours, Irish. He convinced me. I thought it was going to be the Hawks. Oh, well. haha

July 28, 2007  06:31 PM ET

The Hawks were my second choice.

July 28, 2007  06:31 PM ET

I swear, I'm not lying.

July 28, 2007  06:46 PM ET

Jones isn't even on the Suns he was traded to the Blazers.

July 28, 2007  07:20 PM ET

Jumaine Jones? According to NBA.com, he is still on the Suns. If he's not, please send me a link.

July 28, 2007  08:43 PM ET

James Jones plays for the Trail Blazers. Jumaine Jones is still with the Suns.

July 28, 2007  08:49 PM ET

That's what I thought. James Jones used to play for the Suns.

the mavs do not have the best supporting cast in the league. that award goes to either the suns or spurs... or cavs.

July 29, 2007  05:57 AM ET

also if the suns land KG (which they have a legit shot of doing) they will win the champonship. imagine a lineup of nash, bell, garnett, stoudemire and diaw. just thinking about it is scary.

July 29, 2007  06:26 AM ET

Seriously, there's very little chance of the Suns landing KG, especially without giving up Amare in return. Minnesota's simply not going to trade KG for Marion and some pieces to make the numbers work.

The Suns are already way over the cap, and bringing in KG would likely put them even further into the luxury tax. And I believe the owner's already said he's trying to reduce his luxury tax, not increase it. There have been rumblings that KG wants an extension from any team he's traded to, so you could very well be locked into a high priced aging star for years to come.

Personally, as a Lakers fan, I'm one of the few who doesn't want to see him in a Lakers uniform, at least not unless the asking price comes down.

July 31, 2007  06:54 PM ET

C'mon, Irish. Respond already.

July 31, 2007  07:31 PM ET

Hold up, hold up! You said the Mavs in your first two arguments. Then the final argument you argued for Dallas and said the Spurs were going to have the best record in your last sentence. What is up with that?

Also, the Lakers aren't a good team. Every series is an off-series for them because they live and die by Kobe Bryant.

Next, the Suns didn't have an off-series last year. Stern and Stu Jackson took it upon themselves to have the Spurs win that series.

Finally, how could the Spurs have had an off-series when they won the Championship?

July 31, 2007  07:35 PM ET

Oops. I was thinking Mavs, but I wrote Spurs. I mean an off series over a period of time, not last year. I lose. Good throwdown.

July 31, 2007  07:37 PM ET

haha. That's the first time anyone has ever said that to me right after his last argument: "I lose. Good throwdown." haha

I understand what you mean by period of time now, I didn't really get it before though.

July 31, 2007  07:43 PM ET

Hey, Irish. I haven't one a throwdown since the first week in June and my last three throwdowns I lost by a total of 6 votes. This is very relieving.
