The Boston Red Sox.

Their 64-40 record give them a .615 winning percentage, obviously an MLB-leading number. They have four more wins and two less losses than any other team. They have played very well at home this season giving them a .642 winning percentage. They have the second best road record in the Major Leagues with a .588 winning percentage.

Batting - Second in the MLB in on-base percentage, fourth in the MLB in on-base + slugging, fifth most runs scored in the MLB.

Pitching - Best ERA in the AL, best in the AL in strike-outs, tied for first in the AL in BAA, second in baseball with 9 shut-outs, third in the AL in saves, tied for third in the AL for complete games.

They're pitching has been phenomenal, from Beckett (13 wins) to Matsuzaka (12 wins) to Wakefield (12 wins) to Okajima (.87 ERA) to Papelbon (23 saves - 2.15 ERA). Their hitting hasn't been the *best* but definitely, definitely enough to propel them to 64 victories.

Detriot Tigers.

Tehy ahve a 60-43 record with a 26-21 home record and a 34-22 on the road. They were 14-4 in interleague play. They had the best road record. The Angels and them had the same interleague record.

Batting-5th total for homers. 1st in most runs scored. 4th on-base %. 1st in slugging. 1st in on-base plus slugging.

I will discuss what their pitching has been like, and arguments, watch the Tigers on ESPN right now, and you will see that they are the best team in the league.

The problem I see with Detroit is their in-division records.

Remaining games:
Cleveland - 8
Minnesota - 6
Chicago - 9
Kansas City - 6

So far this season... 4-6 against the Indians, 7-5 against the Twins, 4-5 against the Sox, 8-4 against the Royals.

Their winning records are against two of the bottom three in the division which is given for most first place teams. They have a losing record against the second worst team in the division.. being the Sox.. and they have the most in-division games to play during the remainder of the season.

They have four remaining games with the AL East last place team, the Devil Rays, and they have a losing record against them.. not to mention another game going on right now against the Angels and they have a losing record against them (Angels going for the sweep).

I don't think the Tigers can get it done with Fernando Rodney, Joel Zumaya, Pudge, Vance Wilson, and Thames on the DL.

The Red Sox on the other hand.. their DL list includes: Schilling (due back Aug. 5 or 6th), Brendan Donnelly (who they can live without), and Matt Clement (6.61 ERA in 12 games).

Justin Verlander is 11-3 3.43ERA 115 strikeouts 8th no-hitter in Tigers history.
Jeremy Bonderman is 10-2 3.69ERA 113 strikeouts
Todd Jones is 1-4 4.89ERA 23 strikouts 27/32 in save opportunities.

Boston is 0-3 against Detriot, with no games remaining against them. They are 2-1 against Baltimore with 13 games remaining. The are 5-1 against Tampa Bay with 9 games remaining. They are 7-5 against New York with 6 games remaining. They are 3-0 against the LA Angels with 7 games remaining.

...exactly. You just helped prove my point? Boston has winning records against all the teams you mentioned and they play what I would call a substantial number of games with most of them.

Oh yeah, I watched the game for you last night and it didn't really help your argument. Bonderman is now 10-3 with a 4.33 ERA after giving up 10 earned runs (11 overall) in only 2.1 innings. Verlander and Bonderman have also given up 10+ home-runs each.

Todd Jones- An ERA of 4.89 isn't good for a closer. He's given up 48 hits in 43.1 innings. Also not good numbers for a closer.

The Red Sox have a better record currently, and they have easier teams remaining.. or they've at least been playing better than them. Therefore, the Red Sox are the better team.

Sorry, computer very slow, and didn't go though and then it just put out two. If you or me miss their 3rd argument, but it below in the comments.

Why are you posting the Tigers' record when it's clearly not as good as the Red Sox's.

And who cares about their interleague record?

Argh. I always do that.

July 30, 2007  08:00 AM ET

Dyhard...I watched the Tigers last night, and I was less than impressed.

July 30, 2007  08:26 AM ET

Yeah, I agree, Basketball Jesus.

July 30, 2007  11:01 AM ET

they fell apart that game. Boston is 0-3 against the Tigers. Peter Gammons even says that Detriot is the best team in the MLB.

July 30, 2007  11:23 AM ET

OK, so now Peter Gammons is God? I get it. Last time I checked, Gammons was just *another analyst*.

Boston and Detroit have no more games remaining.. you mentioned that. Therefore, they don't really have to worry about it. Best record in baseball = best team in baseball... unless they are in a terrible division in the NL... which they aren't.

July 30, 2007  07:54 PM ET

no, i'm just saying that he even says that Detriot is the best team. Something to just help me out a little bit.

Detroit is also slumping. 4 losses in a row and 3-7 in their last 10. Not good.
