Although they may not win the AL East, you can't deny they are still in contention to make the playoffs. The Yankees are just 3 games out of the Wild Card, and now 7 out of the AL East.

The Yankees had the best record in baseball during the month of July, scoring 200 runs. Their very own Hideki Matsui hit 12 home-runs, I believe, just this month. Robinson Cano, Melky Cabrera, and Bobby Abreu were hot on top of Matsui.

The Yankees right now are getting this done without Alex Rodriguez.. basically. A-Rod hasn't hit a home-run in 12+ at-bats, as he's pressing for home-run #500. If the Yankees can continue to stay hot and A-Rod returns to form, the Yankees are definitely contenders to finish on-top of the American League Wild Card.

This Saturday their prized young pitcher, Phillip Hughes, will be making his first start since suffering a leg injury in Texas and having to leave the game while he had pitched 6 1/3 no-hit ball.

With Hughes returning to the rotation, and Moose regaining some of his form (winning his last two decisions), the Yankees rotation may be at its hight this season.

The Yankees are benefiting right now from the fac thay are playing the absolute weakest part of their schedule. And they're doing it at home. That all ends soon, and then they'll have to face the reality that they do not have the pitching to make a run at even the wildcard. Sure, they scored a bunch of runs in July, but that was against the worst pitching in baseball. But coming out of this weekend they have to travel to Toronto, Cleveland, Los Angeles Angeles, Detroit...and their homes are Baltimore, Detroit and Boston. In other words, their August schedule will finish them off for good for 2007.

The Yankees know what they need to do. They need to play great baseball the remainder of the season. When they face Detroit, Cleveland, and Boston.. they know they have ground to make-up. If they lose, they fall in the standings. The veterans on this team (namely the pitchers Clemens, Pettitte, etc.) know what their role is late in the season and they normally step it up.

The Yankees did go threw an easy part in their schedule.. but either way, they stepped up their play. The Royals had been very hot when they played the Yankees.. they had the best record in baseball since the end of June.. sometime around then. They took three of four from them.

They have the pitching.. if they perform. Clemens have always been clutch, and so has Pettitte. Wang has been their pitcher for the past two years. Moose, as I stated, is coming around. Hughes.. serious potential. They will be calling up Joba Chamberlain soon to take over the set-up role, and this kid also has serious potential.

Well, I'd hope they "KNOW". They can read the standings just like everyone. The problem is, they have not been able to "DO" this year. They've had a couple of hot streaks, but then they fall apart again. This month will prove that their pitching can't stand up to some of the best hitters in baseball. They had their shot by the trade deadline, and they didn't do anything worth discussing. 2007 is over. 2008 plans are underway.

Although they could've added an arm in the bullpen, they got rid of one of their problems, and they added an offensive force that will be able to help them this year, and next if A-Rod decides to leave the team. They've wanted Betemit for about three years now come the trade deadline. Finally we don't have to heard about it anymore.

This is their month to prove themselves. They definitely have the pitching *if* they are effective. Definitely.

I don't expect them to win the division, but that wasn't my argument. They definitely can reach the Wild Card especially with a couple games against Cleveland. They play well down the stretch.. it's been seen many times before.

Actually, you argued both the WC and the division in your opening statement. And with both, they are done. The competition this month IS the competition for both the WC and the division. And their pitching simply isn't strong enough this year to overcome the deficit. Any team can look good against Tampa or Chicago this season. So the last couple of weeks have given Yankee fans a false sense of hope. Now it gets tough, and all season it has been the tough that have been their undoing.

way to make the same argument, word for word, jimpryor99, in two different TDs. Should have let someone else take one of them.

August 1, 2007  09:58 AM ET

Why? They both made the same exact argument.

August 1, 2007  10:07 AM ET

cody he im with u i am in a td with jim also same topic except i dont think the yanls are in contention i think they are going to win the wc u get my vote because i dont think there is a chance they cool down they are too good and with joba and hughes they are even better.

August 1, 2007  10:09 AM ET

what i dont get is how cody is up 5-2 and im down 5-2 we make the same argument and jim also makes the same exact arguments not changing anything

August 1, 2007  10:10 AM ET

I haven't seen your throwdown... I'll go look for it.

August 1, 2007  10:10 AM ET

And by in contention.. I meant the Wild Card. I stated that in my post. ;)

August 1, 2007  10:12 AM ET

That's a nightmare of an August schedule...Yanks are sunk.

August 1, 2007  10:13 AM ET

how can you be winning 1 TD and losing 1 TD about the same topic......at the same time??? Just goes to show the consistency of fannation

August 1, 2007  10:19 AM ET

I'm always amazed by things like that Rodger. It isn't like this argument is that much stronger than the other one. They all say the same thing.

August 1, 2007  10:20 AM ET

Yankee fans aren't the most intelligent folks. They probably dont' realize there are 2 seperate throwdowns.

August 1, 2007  10:22 AM ET

There is no way they are winning the division. That ain't happening. But they could still get the WC. Only 3 back of the Indians who always struggle down the stretch. August will make or break the season.

August 1, 2007  10:51 AM ET

lol @ Jim.......

Motley crue was awsome 80's butt rock......but definitely NOT what rock and roll was meant to be. I love the music, but have a hard time getting passed the spandex and BIG HAIR..

August 1, 2007  11:00 AM ET

I'm talking about how they lived their lives. The spandex and hair was just the look of the 80's. But the parties were legendary. Read: The Dirt: Confessions of the World's Most Notorious Rock Band. An amazing book about their lives in the 80's.
