Look, this argument really comes down to only two coaches: Vince Dooley and Mark Richt. I know that Vince Dooley brought Georgia it's only national championship, but Richt's coaching era is during a time in which every SEC team has the chance to be in the top 25 in the polls. When Dooley won the National Championship in 1980, only four other SEC teams were above .500: LSU, Alabama, Mississippi State, and Florida, and the best record of any non conference regular season game was 6-5 by Clemson. Fast Forward to 2005, the season in which Georgia won it's last SEC Championship. Five SEC schools were above .500 and the WORST record by a non-conference team was 5-6 by Louisiania-Monroe. Richt's record after six years was 61-17. Dooley's record after six years was 43-18-4, meaning Richt has gotten off to a better start as Head Coach than Dooley. If Mark Richt does the smart thing and stays at Georgia, he could easily win at least TWO National Championships.

Until Richt actually wins the big game he cannot even be mentioned in the same breath as Vince Dooley. Dooley won 201 games at the University of Georgia, he did win a national championship in 1980 when he was also recognized as college football's Coach of the Year. And Richt really was set back last year when the team started 5-0 but failed to reach 10 wins for the season. The guy might end up being as good as Dooley, but he needs to prove himself first.

Well for one thing Richt has a pretty good record in big games. Richt has a combined record of 14-10 against UGA's biggest rivals (GT, AUB, TENN, FLA). The only game that Richt has really had trouble with is the Florida game, but it's understandable. Richt has never lost to Georgia Tech, Which Dooley couldn't say after SIX YEARS. Last year many would consider the season a rebulilding year, and the Dawgs still won 9 games including a comeback against VT. Many teams would kill to have a 9 win season.

When his resume has "National Championship" on it, maybe. But you are saying he is the Georgia's greates coah in history right now. That is just impossible, the guy has only won 61 games. And he now is the greatest? Cmon, the guy barely has his feet wet.

Many people don't realize that Dooley did have some losing seasons in his career , and Richt has proven it really doesn't matter who is the offensive or Defensive Coordinator, he can still win. Let's say Erk Russell left Dooley after about three years as coordinator (which would be about 1967). If that would have happended, Georgia would never had won a National Championship. Richt had to replace two great coord. and STILL HASN'T HAD A LOSING SEASON.

Ok, so now you are re-writing history to make your point and who cares about coordinators? It ahs nothing to do with your statement about Richt. Dooley is in the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame, the College Football Hall of Fame and in UGA's Circle of Honor, the university's highest honor for former athletes and coaches. Dooley had one losing season in 24 years, one. You lose.
