Aside from the fact that Gossage is one of the best relievers in baseball history, he did it in an era that the idea of having a ???closer??? was not common practice. Goose was the beginning of the transition into having closers and setup men, except the fact that Goose was often his own setup guy.

Closers these days are generally called upon for the 9th inning, and nothing else. Closers generally hover around the 50-inning mark per season. Goose had nine seasons with over 80 innings pitched. Of all the pitchers in baseball history with 300 saves, he???s got more strikeouts, innings pitched, and wins than any of them.

And now that Eckersley and Sutter have paved the way for top-notch relievers to get in, Goose is next in line.

who is goose is the first question and does anyone know who he is thought so he is not really a closer anyway

I'm not really sure how to respond to your first comment, being that there was no punctuation or cognitive thought whatsoever.

Regardless, we're talking about one of the most dominant relievers in baseball history, and a guy who was nothing but clutch in the postseason.

- 310 career saves
- Lifetime ERA of 3.01
- K/BB ratio of better than 2/1
- Career 1.23 WHIP
- 9 All-Star appearances
- 4 Top-5 Cy Young finishes
- 5 Top-20 MVP finishes

His high finishes in Cy and MVP voting are all the more impressive when you consider the little attention relievers received in his heyday. Gossage was ahead of his time.

I can't take this one, because I love Goose. I see him all the time here in Colorado Springs, and I respect him a lot. But the problem is that he can't really be classified as a closer, just as he can't be classified as a starter. While he was getting "saves", he was also going 13-5 in the same season. So he's just out in limbo as to where he belongs on the lists.

Gossage was good, but he doesn't compare to the other HOF relievers. Gossage won only one rolaids-relief award. Sutter won 4 and had a Cy Young. Fingers won 4, had a Cy Young and an MVP. Eckersly had a Cy Young and an MVP as well.

Dang, I didn't know Rolaids Relief awards got you in the Hall.

August 2, 2007  03:54 PM ET

And just think, Nolan Ryan's in the HOF without a Cy Young Award, but Mark Davis has one and isn't in. Can you believe that?!

August 2, 2007  03:55 PM ET

Cy Youngs and MVPs do.

I voted for frankg...obviously.

It's a lot more believeable than thinking Curtis Granderson's a better leadoff hitter than Brian Roberts.

August 2, 2007  04:04 PM ET

Are you honestly saying you'd take an overachieving scrappy 2B over a blue chip, 5-tool prospect like Granderson? Again, I'm not saying Roberts isn't a good player. I'd love that guy on my team. But I'd take any of those over him.

Can you honestly say you'd rather have Roberts in your team over Reyes, Ramirez, Rollins, Sizemore, Ichiro, Soriano, etc.?

August 2, 2007  04:16 PM ET

Rolaids Relief award recognizes the best at that position. So yes, I'd say they are an indicator. Just as a gold glove, silver slugger, MVP, Cy Young award does.

August 2, 2007  04:23 PM ET

Look, I didn't say a better player, I said a better leadoff hitter. Read before saying something you can't back up.

Roberts has a better career OBP, a better OBP this year, and many more SBs than Granderson. Granderson has some pop, but leadoff hitters aren't meant to hit home runs.

In my TD, I never said I'd take him over those players, but strictly as a leadoff hitter should be compared to them.

One difference between Gossage and more recent closers is that Gossage often pitched as many as three innings to finish a game, while modern closers typically pitch the ninth inning only.

Making him even MORE impessive than the closers today...he got wins and losses because he wasn't coddled...and his arm turned out just fine...

...and Cy Youngs don't ALWAYS go to the best pitcher...Colon in 2005?

i think dirk nowitzki should be in the hall of fame

The Ring needs to forfeit this TD.

August 6, 2007  11:41 AM ET

When do these things finally end? The Ring hasn't answered in four days. Maybe he watched the tape.

August 6, 2007  12:43 PM ET

I don't know that it will unless it is finished or he forfeits it.
