Can you say "Duo MVP"??

What are you talking about, it's the Red Sox!

Just kidding.

They're up among the best, but you can't say they're THE best in the NL. Yes, Atkins tore it up last season, but he's doing slightly worse this year. In any case, here are some other fearsome 3/4s that at least rival, if not best Atkins and Holliday:

Carlos Lee and Lance Berkman: .278 BA, .363 OBP, 42 HRs, 159 RBIs

Derrek Lee and Aramis Ramirez: .322 BA ,.387 OBP, 38 HRs, 127 RBIs

Chipper Jones and Mark Teixeira: .314 BA, .411 OBP, 34 HRs, 114 RBIs

Teixeira's only been in town for the past few days, but the Braves almost certainly will end up batting him cleanup. Chipper's been in the 3-hole most of this season, and Andruw Jones has played himself out of cleanup.

Ryan Braun and Prince Fielder: .317 BA, .385 OBP, 52 HRs, 136 RBIs

They're still a young combination, but they look they have the potential to possibly be as good as Holliday, Atkins.

Ken Griffey Jr. and Brandon Phillips: .273 BA, .352 OBP, 46 HRs, 134 RBIS, 27 SBs

There's probably other combos I left off, but the point is at least one of these 3/4 combos is probably better, and it's unfair to call Holliday Atkins the best.

Kevin Cash is the best 1-2 combo.

August 6, 2007  02:50 PM ET

And apparently he can play for two more years....

August 6, 2007  02:51 PM ET

Lee and Ramirez.... Ramirez got off to a slow start and Lee hasn't been healthy and still look st their numbers...

August 6, 2007  03:18 PM ET

Holliday is probably the most underrated player this year, but Atkins is having a very unspectactular season compared to last season.
He just finds a couple of games and goes on streaks, sorry your claim is not sufficient.

Coletrain - you gotta give me a heads up if you're going to start dropping Kevin Cashs.

Lefty do you not know how throwdowns work? I haven't seen you write more than a sentence.

August 6, 2007  03:57 PM ET

I have to go with Jesus on this one. I'd take any of the ones he listed over Holliday-Atkins, even though I have to give them props. As for Atkins winning an MVP, well, that's pretty out there.

August 6, 2007  04:30 PM ET

Don't Utley and Howard usually bat 3-4...I mean, last year's MVP (Howard) and the guy who was getting serious consideration for MVP this season before he got hurt. (Utley)

August 6, 2007  04:33 PM ET

Utley and Pujols combined

.302, 47HRs, .405 OBP, 148 RBIs

August 6, 2007  04:37 PM ET

Yup...they usually bat 3rd and 4th...Utley over 79 games in the 3 spot, Howard, 87 games in the 4 spot...So, Utley and Howard

August 6, 2007  04:38 PM ET

Griffey and Phillips don't normally bat 3-4....

August 6, 2007  04:55 PM ET

Phillips has 166 ABs in cleanup this season, more than anyone else on the Reds roster (I'm not 100% sure of that, but I believe it's true). I was surprised Adam Dunn wasn't in cleanup.

I ran out of space at the end and couldn't list everyone, but Utley and Howard would've been next for me.

August 6, 2007  05:05 PM ET

'Phillips has 166 ABs in cleanup this season, more than anyone else on the Reds roster'

Fair enough...I don't believe they normally bat 3, 4, but I could be wrong...still, Utley and Howard's #s are better in all but stolen bases

August 6, 2007  05:06 PM ET

In fact, Utley's and Howards numbers are better combined than any of the others listed...

August 6, 2007  05:08 PM ET

My vote still goes to you...since it seems it was Atkins and Holliday vs the field...

August 6, 2007  05:09 PM ET

In hindsight, yes, I do wish I put Utley and Howard up there, but like I stated before, I simply came up with some off the top of my head, and looked up their stats. I ought to have put those 2 up first, but the ones I listed are deserving of a mention (I believe).
