Jorge Posada is the top backstop among all American League catchers. At the age of 36, Posada is on pace to start more games this season (151) than in any season of his career other than in 2000 when he also caught 151 games. Posada is hitting at a career best rate and stands at .338 with 14 home runs and 67 RBI's. He remains one of the most consistent players in the league and is a huge asset to the Yankees' clubhouse

Its Victor Martinez he's hitting .298 has 18 home run and 80 rbi's. Plus he's younger than Posada

Well firstly, the topic clearly states that this season is the only thing we are taking into account, so age goes out the window. Secondly, Jorge might be slightly trailing in terms of power numbers, however he is hitting 40 points higher than Martinez and has an OBP of 422 compared to Victor's 371. Posada chalks up 3 hrs 15 rbis a month and is hitting over 300 in every month. He is a switch hitter and also manages the pitcfhing staff with great experience and intelligence.

Victor has had 26 more at bats this season then Posada. And Jorge doesnt need to put up numbers, he's got an amazing line up around him. The line up around Martinez isn't as good, so of course his OBP is going to be slightly down. Victor handles a much worse pitching staff very well too. Also Victor is on pace to catch about the same number of games as Posada is.

You fail to consider that Victor has started 23 games at 1st base and 2 at DH because he is a defensive liability.Martinez is a great catcher however you fail to consider that he is primarily an offensive catcher; and Posada's numbers offensively are just better. As for Victor catching for a worse pitching staff-- Sabathia has 14 wins, Carmona 13 and Byrd 10. On the Yankees staff no starting pitcher has won more than 8 games with the exception of Wang (13) and the Yankee bullpen is very unreliable

He's not as big of a defensive liability as everyone things behind the plate I mean a .995 fielding percentage isnt that bad. And as catcher this year Martinez has been apart of 6 double plays behind the plate compared to Posada's 3. And Posada(4) has one more error than Martinez (3)has this year.

Not a chance. Hitting is pretty much equal, but Martinez is nowhere near the better player behind the plate calling the game.

August 9, 2007  02:57 PM ET

sorry about declining it I just looked at his stats and I knew he was doing good but I didnt think he was doing that good until now

August 9, 2007  02:57 PM ET

The name I first thought of is Russell Martin....

August 9, 2007  02:58 PM ET

not even close. posada's longest hitless streak this year is 9 at bats, tops in the majors. his produciton each month has been as follows:
3 hr, 15 rbi in each month from april to july and is on pace to do better in august. he also has been over 300 in each month. his consistency is unmatched, his reliability is unmatched and he means way more to his team than martinez

August 9, 2007  03:00 PM ET

umm your both wrong, its russel martin. hes got practically the same numbers as posada except for average (martins is hovering around 300) but martin also has 18 steals and isnt protected by a fantastic offense around him and Martin is younger than both of em at just 23.

August 9, 2007  03:02 PM ET

What does AGE have to do with a discussion about THIS YEAR?

August 9, 2007  03:02 PM ET

not even close. posada's longest hitless streak this year is 9 at bats, tops in the majors.

umm yeah aaron miles went 7-7 at one point, getting nine hits in a row is more a string of good fortune..... are you saying that Jorge Posada is the best player in the league simply because he had a string of good fortune?

August 9, 2007  03:02 PM ET

John, its because it does, it just does.

August 9, 2007  03:05 PM ET

hit-LESS streak.

He's never gone more than 9 at-bats without a hit.

August 9, 2007  03:08 PM ET

Actually, Martin has on 12 HRs, and only 68 RBIs. Posada leads him in every category except for stolen bases. Not much use if you don't score after the steal though. I'll still take Posada. Martin also has 10 errors to Posada's 4.

August 9, 2007  03:09 PM ET

Birds....no it doesn't...it just doesn't.

August 9, 2007  03:17 PM ET

Also, Martin plays superior defence to Posada.

August 9, 2007  03:20 PM ET

Posada is having a consistently great year at the plate. He has always been ++ behind the plate. His only deficiency is he can be a bonehead on the basepaths.

August 9, 2007  03:27 PM ET

look at the lineup around Martin, Jeff Kent isnt exaclty someone to be feared anymore so of course Posada has more runs and RBI than Martin

August 9, 2007  03:27 PM ET

Posada, no doubt. Not bad for an old fart.

August 9, 2007  03:29 PM ET

Posada only has two more homers and runs too, and Martin has more RBI so you shouldnt lie to win your arguement

August 9, 2007  03:35 PM ET

birds on the bat, can you read i said hitLESS at bats. thats one of the coolest stats ive heard all year. never worse than 0-9 in a streak.

August 9, 2007  03:36 PM ET

hey man hook-ed on phoneics is a workin fo me!

now that is pretty cool though, ill give you that but im still stickin with martin

August 9, 2007  03:46 PM ET

Yeah i realized the age thing was stupid

August 9, 2007  04:16 PM ET

i also didnt have room to write these few things that everyone shud consider...
posada this season spent most of the months of april-june catching rookie, minor league pitchers (chase wright, tyler clippard, matt de salvo, jeff karstens, darrel rasner)-- martinez has been catching 2 of the top AL pitchers so far this season in sabathia and carmona...
also badgerfan writes above that "martinez has 26 more at bats than posada"-- let me just say that he failed to consider that walks do not count as at bats and jorge has 52 walks to martinez's 43 walks; another tribute to Posada's patience and talent at the plate. Overall, Posada is more reliable behind the plate, much stronger at the plate, and a huge asset to any ballclub/pitching staff.
