1. Emmitt Smith-obviously number 1. most career rushing yards and won some super bowls along the way
2. Walter Payton- 16000 yards along with 110 rushing TD and was a part of Da Bears in 85
3. Jim Brown- managed 12000 yards in only 9 seasons and had 106 TD. one of the first great RB and players ever
4. Barry Sanders- 15000 rushing yards and 99 TD and was the only bright spot of the Lions history
5. Marshall Faulk- this one will be argued, i know it. 12000 yards and an even 100 TD along with his recieving skills in 36 recieving TD and 6875 recieving yards. he was why the Rams won it all in 99

1. Jim Brown: Revolutionized the game in his 9 years. The seasons he played in were shorter than todays and he still put up uncanny #'s. And he was pretty well balanced. 262 Career Receptions and 20 TD's.
2. Walter Payton: The definition of a complete back. 16,000+ Yards Rushing. 492 Receptions with 4,538 Yards Receiving, 15 TD's. Could do it ALL.
3. Emmitt Smith: All Time Rushing leader. Great back, but anybody could have put up his type of #'s with the line he had during his entire career.
4. Barry Sanders: The most electrifying player to EVER take the field.
5. OJ Simpson: First RB to break 2,000 yards in a season. Outstanding #'s. Sadly known for others things today.
ravens26 said 08/11, 01:49 AM
so you took Simspon out instead of Faulk.he was the first to break 2000, but had nearly 1000 yards less then Faulk and was nowhere near the recieving RB Faulk was. Simpson had a combined 75 rush&rec. TD to Faulk's 136. BIG difference

Lets think about this...What if Jim Brown or Walter Payton had the type of O-Lines that Emmitt Smith was graced with? I would believe that Emmitt Smith would be a few thousand yards short of both of them and the rushing title. Jim Brown is quite possibly the most dominant single player in NFL history. His balance of agility and brutish power was incredible. Walter Payton, to me, is the most complete back ever. He was putting up outstanding #'s when the Bears were garbage before the 80's. I dont think Faulk should be nearly as big of an issue as you placing Smith at #1 and Jim Brown outside of the Top 2. Smith was a great back, great red zone back, but not the greatest back.

Brown was a great player, but i think Smith was better. He did have a good o-line but he played during an era where the defenses were better and still holds the rushing title. Payton, i agree was number 2 but Brown will have to be my number 3

Jim Brown Brown averaged 5.2 YPC (A full Yard Above Smith), 262 Attempts Per Season, so I used those stats to figure up another 6 seasons for Brown to match the 15 years Smith played. Hypothetically, if Brown had played 15 seasons, stayed healthy, he would have gotten around 20,000 Yards Rushing. Give or take a thousand under/over. Brown did a lot in 9 seasons, and could have achieved much more if he had played such a longer career like Smith. Of course he didnt due to how much of a bruiser he was, and Smith went so long because he was practically walking into the endzone due to his line parting the Red Sea for him. Brown was leaps and bounds ahead of everyone, including Smith, and its a shame he didnt play longer. I just love thinking about what Brown could have done if he had played 16 game seasons like Smith, with the line Smith had, and 14-15 seasons like Smith.

lol. mac be sure to mention how oj played 31 less games in his career (almost 2 seasons) and also averaged more YPC (4.7-4.3) and a 10.6 to 9.0 yards per catch. But your right Marshall was a better receiving back. lol.

Anyone who broaches this list without putting Jim Brown at No. 1 should be laughed at and then shunned for life. Do you people realize that Jim Brown is the only running back in NFL history to AVERAGE over 5 yards a carry for his career, and that's a record that won't ever be broken? And he did that against defenses specifically designed to stop him. Smith never had to do that and neither did Faulk or any other modern back. Jim Brown is simply the greatest NFL player EVER. And I'm 27 years old. I've never seen him play. I'm not an old codger. But just because it happened 50 years ago doesn't make it any less true. Jim Brown is the Michael Jordan of the NFL. There ends the argument.
