Reggie White, the Minister of Defense.

Reggie played on the Eagles for the first 8 seasons of his career, and played for the Eagles in more seasons than for any other team in his career. Reggie is 2nd on the all-time sacks list, at 198 sacks, 2 behind the leader, Bruce Smith. 3rd on the list is at a distant 160 sacks. The amazing thing about this is that Reggie had 2 less sacks than Bruce Smith in 47 less games!

Reggie over his career also managed 1,112 tackles at the DE position, 33 forced fumbles, and 61 passes defensed! His lowest sack total in his 8 years as an Eagle was 11. He had 14 or more sacks in 7 of his 15 seasons in the NFL.

Reggie White is the greatest Eagles player of all-time, the greatest DE ever, and one of the best players to ever play the game of football.

Chuck "Iron Man" Bednarik. He played both center and linebacker. He was the last two-way player in the NFL. Also, he was one of, if not the most devastating tackler in the NFL. Just look at Frank Gifford. He shortened his career. A little known fact about Bednarik is that he played in every snap except for special teams in both the 1949 and 1960 NFL championship games. Pretty impressive. And an award is even named after him in the collegiate ranks that is awarded to the best defensive player that year.

Yes, Bednarik was great, but he still does not match up to the incredible Reggie White. White was the best DE to EVER play, and you cannot say the same about Bednarik. He was definitely not the best LB to ever play. Bednarik played in a very different era than White as well. Reggie played against bigger, stronger, faster players than Bednarik, not to mention that Reggie was consistently double and even triple-teamed. More players played both sides of the ball back when Bednarik played. Players are taught today to pick one position and stick with it, so Reggie never even had a chance to play on both sides of the ball. While I admit that Bednarik was indeed great, he just doesnt match up with Reggie White.

While I agree that Reggie played against bigger guys, Chuck Bednarik means more to Philly than Reggie, and Reggie meant a lot to Philly. Back when Bednarik played, the amount of two-way players declined. Oh by the way, Deacon Jones was the best DE to play. If they would have counted sacks when he played, he would have had more than Reggie.

Actually, Deacon Jones, himself, says that he had 180.5 sacks, 17.5 less than Reggie White. He says he got paid extra per every sack he made, so thats how he knows the statistic. Here is the link:

Anyway, I do not know how Bednarik means more to Philly than Reggie, besides the fact that Bednarik played on a better team that won a championship. Still, that does not matter when determining the best player.

The point is that Reggie is one of the greatest defensive players to ever play, and just because Bednarik suited up both ways, does not change this. Good throwdown.

Do you know when they started paying him by the sack? It didn't say in the story. It seemed like it was his 3rd year. I remember one of my relatives telling me that he had at least 200 sacks. Bednarik means glory, toughness, and grit in Philly, something that Philly is defined by. Good TD, man.

reggie white is the true minister boy

August 14, 2007  04:22 PM ET

Unarguable point.

August 14, 2007  04:23 PM ET

There are a couple old-timers that could make a run at Reggie if he has a good enough arguement...

August 14, 2007  04:24 PM ET

But I still think Reggie is the best.

August 14, 2007  04:34 PM ET

Bednarik was great but I didn't see him play. Reggie was constantly double teamed and sometimes triple when he was on a tear. RT, TE, RB. Clyde Simmons benefited greatly. 19 sacks in '92...why do you think?

Wow this is a crazy stat "A little known fact about Bednarik is that he played in every snap except for special teams in both the 1949 and 1960 NFL championship games." WOW

The DUDE says Reggie is great, but just because we didn't see Bednarik play doesn't mean we should discount him

August 14, 2007  04:45 PM ET

Sorry, been busy.

August 14, 2007  04:46 PM ET

Good attitude.

Holy crap I just did some research on Bednarik, and dang I am impressed, don't dismiss the notion right away for name recognition

August 14, 2007  04:48 PM ET

Bergey was great too.

August 14, 2007  04:49 PM ET

I have to go with Bednarik. A true every down player. Amazing.
