He deserves it with the job he has done with this team. Before the season on paper, this team looked like it could end up being one of the worst teams in MLB history. It has been far from it. This team has 6 pitchers on the D.L.(3 of them starters), their 1B, and their SS. These are the guys that have started for them:
Bacsik, Mike
Bergmann, Jason (DL)
Chico, Matt
Hill, Shawn
Lannan, John
Patterson, John (DL)
Redding, Tim
Simontacchi, Jason (DL)
The only guy really known outside of Washington was John Patterson, who was gonna be the ace of this staff and he has only pitched 31.1 innings. But with this group of unknowns and a batting line-up that is hitting a whopping .251, this team still has a record of 54-65. Far better then anyone expected. This team is showing fight and has heart(Just look at their recent comeback against the Diamondbacks, who are one of the hottest teams in baseball). Now you might say,"But the Nats Still Have A Bad Record". This is true, but look at last year. Jow Girardi won the Manager Of The Year with an 78-84 record with the Marlins. Lou Piniella has done good but he has ALOT of talent to work with and Ned Yost's Brew Crew has struggled

Congratulations to Manny Acta and the seemingly overachieving Washington Nationals. Because of his tireless work, he took a team no one really cared about, and will make them finish 10 games below .500 instead of 15.

But have you forgotten where Arizona finished last year? Ten games below .500. Did he get a vote for Manager of the Year? No (well, I don???t think he did, anyway).

Considering how young their team is, manager Bob Melvin has done far more than any other manager in the NL, and, unlike Acta, he actually wins, not just provide a symbolic "little engine that could" story.

Melvin wins with a very young bullpen. He wins with patch-work starting pitchers like the ancient Livan Hernandez. He wins with Byung-Hyun Kim logging innings for him, for cripessake! While Acta may have had to piece together his roster from scrap, Melvin didn???t have much more to work with, and Melvin's the guy starting to sniff the post-season. Which one of them has done more to say they are the best in the league? The one who has made people quote Major League, and say "These guys ain???t so f**kin??? bad," or the manager who is a few weeks away from an improbable division title?

Bob Melvin.

Ok..I see what you're saying. But you made some of my points for me. The D-Backs have the most young talent of any orgenization right now. Add the fact they have Cy Young Winner Webb, a very experienced starting rotation, and they just got rid of Kim. LOL. Seriously, they did. Back to the TD, Melvin has done a great job. But once again, Acta has basically NOTHING. The biggest guy they got in the off-season was Dmitri Young!!!

I know the D-backs are a better team. That is obvious. I don't think you understand how bad this team was supposed to be. This team had 120 losses written all over it. The Nats are not an organization that has all the golden prospects the D-Backs have. Yes, they are young. But this ain't the first time a bunch of young guys made the playoffs(they still might not make it, even though they probably will). Cooz, you expect The Nats to have a record like the D-Backs? Joe McCarthy couldn't do that to this team. Acta has done a more impressive job with what he has.

Melvin has given the DBacks the ideal leadership and management to make a young team compete for a pennant. Acta has done a great job helping a floundering franchise tread water. Acta keeps his job, that's reward enough.

Kim pitched for them this year, didn't he? They won with him logging innings, right?

Melvin took a very young team and improved them 20 games, maybe more. That???s more of an impressive job than taking a team the media believed would be 120 game losers and have them only lose 90. One is fact, one is prediction.

Managing a team is about balancing the roster, and knowing which guys to keep in what spots in order to maximize their ability. Unlike most others, baseball is a game that relies more on experience than youth. It takes a while for a kid to develop the ability to play every day in the majors, and to win with as many young guys as Melvin is doing is truly an amazing accomplishment.

He isn't just winning, he???s got the second-best record in the National League. Yes, having a legitimate ace like B-Webb helps, but it's the guys at the bottom of your rotation and your bullpen that get you winning streaks. Melvin's best work is right there.

Look at the D-Backs starting pitching:
Webb-5 years experience
Doug Davis-9 years
Livan-12 years
Joe Kennedy-7 years
Edger Gonzalez-5 years

They have experience with the pitching. That is the only experience they have. Doesn't seem like alot right? It's not alot. Now at the same time, experience doesn't mean as much as you think. You always need some experience, but not alot. Look at the 2002 Angels or the 2003 Marlins.Other managers have done what Melvin is doing. Not too much experience, but they won. Experience is alittle overrated. I know it means more in baseball than any other sport, but still.

Mike Scioscia and Jack McKeon both won manager of the year that year. BUT they won the WS and they had basically NO experience. None. Not even the starting pitchers. While I think experience is overrated, you do still need some. They had none to work with. That is an amazing accomplishment. But this TD ain't about that. It's about this year. And with the roster Acta was given, I believe he deserves to be Manager Of The Year.

This is very simple. If the Nats continue at .454 baseball, which is what they were going into tonight, they'll finish 74-88. That???s three games better than last year. The Manager of the Year is not the guy who improved his team three games, I don???t care if they put ME on their roster.

If the D-Backs stay at .558 ball, they finish 90-72, which is 14 games better. Fourteen is a lot of games, Coletrain, even for the IRON CURTAIN.

Keep in mind, there are several other NL managers who have taken their teams to new levels, unlike Acta. Ned Yost is looking at a 10-game improvement in Milwaukee. Plus, his name is Ned. Lou Piniella is looking at a 16 game difference, and that was with a horrendous start in Chicago.

I understand it can be said Acta did more with less. But that's an arbitrary opinion. The fact is, he got less, and he lost with less. Because he didn't lose as much as some thought he would isn't enough to move him ahead of someone who improved his team a considerable amount.

Acta is worthy of respect, but not of the award.

Part of my arguement got cut off:

"and they had a recent scuffle in the clubhouse not to long ago. Acta wasn't given much and he has made it work. He deserves manager of the year."

August 15, 2007  07:08 PM ET

I'm sorry for posting this late.

August 15, 2007  07:31 PM ET

I don't even know who Manny Acta manages. But Bob Melvin is the easy answer here..

August 15, 2007  07:33 PM ET

Coletrain, I'm in total agreement with you not only because of what you said but because nobody else has done anything special in the NL

August 15, 2007  07:53 PM ET

Clint Hurdle, Rockies
maybe even Dbacks manager over him, the Dbacks manager took a bunch of youngsters and are taking them to the playoffs. i think we need to see how far the dbacks can go in the playoffs before anyone is crowned MOY

August 15, 2007  07:54 PM ET

Actually, they give the award out before the post-season is over. and even if they do, this isn't hockey, making the playoffs is actually a sign of a strong team.

August 15, 2007  08:13 PM ET

Charlie Manuel is an idiot and he shouldn't win manager of the year, but he has to get SOME credit for keeping the Phillies a contender with all their injuries.

August 15, 2007  08:18 PM ET

Sadly enough, Nest, I agree with you and with something positive to be said about Charlie Manuel. However, his success this season is more a matter of luck that the wheels on his pitching staff's truck haven't fallen off yet. Only a matter of time until an axe-wielding manaic jumps onto the field at Citizens Bank Park and hacks off Adam Eaton's head.

August 15, 2007  08:21 PM ET

steelercooz, i was suggesting that the mlb should change its format so that those types of awards waited until after the playoffs ended

August 15, 2007  08:24 PM ET

So you're saying, in reference to this example, Bob Melvin would have to put up a strong showing in the playoffs on top of (let's just assume) an NL West title, and a record 13-16 games over .500 to be Manager of the Year?

August 15, 2007  08:46 PM ET

LOL!!!! Axe manaic. Iron Curtain+Nori Naitruc=Who Don't Wanna Know. LOL

August 15, 2007  08:52 PM ET

Seriously though, after Eaton's last start, I thought he should get a bodyguard. People don't much care for him right now...

August 15, 2007  09:07 PM ET

lol

August 15, 2007  09:30 PM ET

Yada, yada, yada, yada, yada, yada, yada, yada, yada..................................

August 15, 2007  09:30 PM ET

Let's talk football...

August 15, 2007  09:30 PM ET

I'm sorry if you can't understand my last argument. I tried to word it right so it made sense.

August 15, 2007  09:34 PM ET

And obviously, we don't know if the D-Backs are winning the WS.

August 15, 2007  09:40 PM ET

AHHHHHHHHH I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO!

LOUD NOISES!

August 15, 2007  09:42 PM ET

ADAM EATON??!!!

I HATE HIM.

GAHHHHHHHHHH!

August 15, 2007  09:44 PM ET

And cooz, Kim was only there for about 5 minutes.
