Packers Bears is the greatest NFL rivalry.

Most consecutive games, Started in 1922 and they are about to play 170 games, with 48 Hall of Famers and 23 championships combined. Its the oldest, fiercest, and both teams always play each other tough. It sits atop rivalries in the league.

You know EXACTLY who I'm going with: the Cowboys and the Redskins. Each game has a playoff atmosphere. I don't know about YOU as a Redskins fan, but me, I CAN'T wait for those two games to roll around. I watch every game, but I watch THOSE games even closer. If you look at each team: both are steeped in tradition, championships, and Hall of Fame players. Riggins, Irvin, Baugh, Aikman, just to name a few. These teams come together twice a year to show absolute disdain for one another and play some VERY smash-mouth football. When a fan starts talking smack, BOTH sides jump up to help their fellow fan. You see it ALL the time on FanNation. The rivalry of the Cowboys and Redskins, though not quite as old as the oldest rivalry EVER in the NFL, it still surpasses it. It beats it by light years. Of all the teams, the only team to have a lot of success is the Bears, but the Redskins and Cowboys are BOTH gearing up for big time years. Young QBs on both teams; both are looking to prove something. You have one of the best offensive lines in the game today with the Redskins and a devastating pass rush from the Cowboys. Young stars are budding from both teams.

You know I LOVE THAT RIVARLY. I HATE THE BOYS. But I had to take away personal feelings, step back and take an objective look. Check these out:

In 1986 GB defensive tackle Charles Martin wore a towel with specific Bears numbers written on it (#34, Walter Payton, #9 Jim McMahon). It was considered a hit list by many. Following a McMahon interception Martin came up from behind and body slammed him to the turf, separating McMahon's shoulder, ending his season.

In the opening week of the 2006 Bears gave Favre his first shutout in his 16-year career.

Halas got the Packers expelled from the league in order to prevent them from signing a particular player, and then got them re-admitted after the Bears had closed the deal with that player

In 85 the fire in the Bears???Packers rivalry was relit when Ditka used 350???plus pound lineman "Refrigerator" Perry as a truly "wide" receiver in a touchdown play at Lambeau Field, flagrantly taunting the Packers.

The Packers have also one-upped the Bears from time to time over the years, such as the "Instant Replay Loss" game of 1989

I'm still trying to figure out what those REALLY have to do with the rivalry besides Charles Martin's Hit List and Halas' suspension of the Packers. The rest are just things that happen like a shutout. The Cowboys and Redskins have had plenty of high scoring AND low scoring games. Even games that come down to the wire much like this past year's second game in Washington. If you watched that game, it was a tug of war the ENTIRE game and ended on the final play on a blocked field goal. I???ll tell you up front: I gave this throwdown an objective look and only a few came to my mind, but NONE could top the greatest NFL rivalry ever in the Cowboys and Redskins. In the 70s, 80s, and 90s these teams DOMINATED the competition and made a combined 13 Super Bowl appearances and combined came away with 8 trophies. During those years when they would meet in the regular season it was like a clash of the titans. Now look at the Bears-Packers: The Bears have TWO Super Bowl appearances and are 1-1 while the Packers have 4 appearances and come away 3-1.

Compare those records:

Redskins-Cowboys: 8-5
Bears-Packers: 4-2.

Ben, you know your my boy, you know I am a diehard skins fan. That doesn't erase the past. If you read Modbaths and Bloodbaths: the insides story of the Bears-Packers rivalry, you would see it goes deeper then you think. Listen I love hating on Cowboys, you know that, but I cannot ignore the past. The proximity of these two teams, combined with the Big City Bears vs. the Small Town Packers, mixed in with the bordering states rivalry thing (Wisconsin vs. Illinois), and then add a touch of the fact that these two teams have competed against each other (twice a year most years) for 70+ years, makes this one the one that defines all other rivalries.

Ed Sprinkle said he wore his helmet on the
sideline because Packers fans threw beer bottles.

BUT, when looking at a rivalry you have to see when two things match up. Meat Packers and Grizzly Bears don't/didn't do battle often whereas Cowboys and Indians do/did (old west). That's just a side point, but the the thing here is that the Redskins and Cowboys are, quite possibly, two of the GREATEST teams in NFL history in terms of championships and on field success as well as Hall of Famers. The Bears and Packers are great when it comes to those same things (especially the Pack), but the Bears haven???t been QUITE as lucky. They have HOFers, great seasons, BUT only a single championship. Again, compare that. There is also ALOT of hype when it surrounds Cowboys-Redskins games, while Packers-Bears games aren???t too big time because neither team was great at the same time. When the Packers had success the Bears were declining and vice-versa. In many a season, the Cowboys and Redskins play at least one prime time game whereas the Packers and Bears usually play day time games or late afternoon games.

Well, that???s about ALL I have and I need A LOT of votes to win???

this should be fun, i dont think weve throwdown.. before

How do you want this argued?

Report Offensive Comment

however you want, that its not?

Report Offensive Comment

Well you seem to use HOFers, games played, etc. I was going more with emotion and atmosphere...and some of that too...

Report Offensive Comment

Thats coming..so yeah throw it out there

Report Offensive Comment

you must be going with cahrgers raiders then

Report Offensive Comment

Haha...you think.

he dislocated his elbow....suck

Report Offensive Comment

He shouldn't be out too long with that...not as bad as something else he could have done...

Report Offensive Comment

sorry trust me its good, but not good enough to challenge bears packers

Report Offensive Comment

So you think...

Report Offensive Comment

I'm a Packer fan and while the Bears rivalry is great and is the most historical in the NFL, currently it can't compare with Pats-Colts in terms of atmosphere and significance. The Packers and Bears (at least for the last 20 years or so) have rarely been good at the same time, which takes away a lot of the rivalry's significance.

Report Offensive Comment

i disagree, i think it depends on how the teams play each other, not their respective records each season, the bears packers still play each toher tough

Report Offensive Comment

THE REST OF MY FIRST ARGUMENT:

The Packers are declining and have been for a few years. Favre isn???t the big QB he used to be and they have either a 2nd year or a rookie starting at RB. They only have one good receiver BUT he is 32. Cowboys-Redskins is greatest.

Report Offensive Comment

BOOOOOOOOO on both rivalries!!!

Report Offensive Comment

yes, Steelers-Ravens crossed my mind...

Report Offensive Comment

But they AREN'T a big enough rivlary...

Report Offensive Comment

? Eagle you confuse me sometimes...

Report Offensive Comment

I think history has its place, so it's hard to put the Pats/Cots up there. It's just a blip on the radar in the grand scheme of things. Neither team won squat before 2001. I would put Steelers/Ravens up against any in the league (dates back several decades as the former Browns/Steelers rivalry), but I think this is really just going to come down to loyalty toward one of the four teams mentioned in the arguments.

Steelercooz, Ravens AREN'T the Browns...
