Should the Eagles have cut Trotter? Will he get picked up quickly by another team?

I think the Eagles have made a mistake cutting Trotter. He's a leader and good run stopper. He doesn't have great mobility or speed but I think it is worth having him for short yardage situations, at the very least.

I think he will be picked up very quickly.

Trotter was the shortstop of the Eagles defense. But last year he proved that he did not have the goods to do his job; stop the run. Trotter might get picked up by a team, but they will most likely use him as a backup or else they must be starved for a MLB. Trotter tested the FA market last year and no one but the Eagles would take him because he has wobbly knees. Most team doctors didn't even know how he could walk, much less play.

I would prefer to have him on the roster for, like I said, at least short yardage situations. Certainly inside the 5 for example. He has good instincts and has been one to make plays. Also, I think the leadership shouldn't be ignored. Some young Eagle LBs will be getting plenty of time and he could be helpful to bring them along. I would keep him on the roster.

He'll get picked up. A team like the Bengals for example.

Trotter has been a great LB. But again, not many teams will take a flyer on an older player with medical issues. The Eagles must feel confident (I don't know why) that their LB corps is complete. Don't forget, after the 3rd preseason game the first round of cuts begins. The Eagles most likely felt they needed to keep and evaluate the younger players who have more "upside" than Trotter's proven quantity of last year. Look for Trot. to be picked up after the 53 man rosters are closer to being set.

I wouldn't be counting on him to have the lion's share of plays, but to be situational.

He's not that old, he's just 30. Lots of players have injury issues. It's part of the game.

He's averaged 10.7 tackles per game. (Not terribly relevant, just throwing it out there).

I'd have him on my roster. Good player.

I won't argue with you on Trotter being a good player. But if other teams wouldn't take him last year, what's changed this year? Bad knees on a LB who goes sideline to sideline is like taking a QB with a bad throwing arm. You know it's a crapshoot and chances are good it'll come up snake eyes. If he is picked up, it won't be while teams are still paring down their roster. They will wait until they know who they want and what room they have under the cap and spots on the roster.

Trotter is a great LB, he was part of the heart and soul of the team. But Gaither will do a better job simply because he's younger.

BRB Gotta go back to work for a bit.

No hurry.

Report Offensive Comment

Yes they should cut him immediatly...... And then Marv Levy should sign him

Report Offensive Comment

He has already been cut.

Report Offensive Comment

yes Goodell...your Bills are still trying to figure out how to stop the run. Trotter isn't the answer.

Report Offensive Comment

Here come the slams from the Eagle Homers crowd. We all love Trotter...okay some don't, but he's just not cutting it. His knees will fail him sooner and later in the season.

Report Offensive Comment

Really BRB. Gotta go to a meeting. ZZZZZZZ Boooring.

Cool. I just saw I have 10 more minutes. LOL Like anyone else on here cares.

In principle I'm with you my Brazilian namesake. Trot was one of the few who could stop the run in the front 7. But case in point is the Divisional game against the Saints. The Eagles, and more to the point, Trotter could not stop Duce and Bush if their lives depended on it. This is why the Eagles got bigger on LB with Gaither, Gocong, and the kid from Nebraska. Spikes will have to take the lead now and man these young kids up on stopping the run and getting to the QB.

Forgot to mention

4 PRO BOWLS!

Report Offensive Comment

Yes. Trotter did make 4 pro bowls. He WAS great. But with time the body wears down. Trot is not the same player he was even 2 years ago. The Eagles are constantly trying to get younger and stronger. Hence why they got rid of their center last year for an UDFA and practice squad player. That's also why the Eagles drafted Kolb. They know McNabb is aging and it may only be a matter of time before he needs to be replaced.

Trot was a great player, but the truth is, his knees are not very strong now. He has a lot of trouble moving around. Trotter showed a lot of class in the way he handled being released, though. He showed no hard feelings, and he really connected with the fans in Philly while he was here.

He might retire. He said in his interview that he hasn't decided yet.

Report Offensive Comment

FearThePack, the Redskins have already tried to use him and it didn't work out well, the Redskins WILL NOT try to pick him. Maybe the Saints or, as Jazinho said, the Bengals.

Report Offensive Comment

I don't know about the Bengals. He'd have to get a few parking tickets at least. LOL

Report Offensive Comment

The interview just happened, so you probably won't be able to see it for a little while. They broadcasted it live locally in the Philly area like 5 minutes ago.

Report Offensive Comment

This is still surprising to me. He played in 15 games last year, after all. It's not like he was on crutches at any point.

Report Offensive Comment

No. But that's the marvel of Trotter. He was able to do what he did with weak knees. Muscles and bones can take a serious beating. But when your joints (the non herbal type) wear out, it's hard to play at a high level. This is what happened to Trot.

If Trotter retires, the Eagles need to put him in the front office or as an assistant's assistant or whatever. He would be an asset to teaching the young LB's they have on the roster. This is exactly what Emmitt Smith did on the Cardinals before he decided to retire and put on his dancing shoes.
