Byron Leftwich, who will finally start to fulfill his promise from when he was drafted. He's lost weight and is now 100% healthy from the leg injury he had his final year at Marshall. He's got his health, 2 great rb's, an improved line (which was already good last year) and a sick defense that can and will keep the Jags in any game. Heck, even the D was beat up last year w/ injuries (like Leftwich) that would have crippled other defenses and they didn't skip a beat. Also, the toughest their schedule gets is this: Indy (twice), Denver, New Orleans, and San Diego (who all made the playoffs) as overall teams. They play K.C. too who made the playoffs last year but they pretty much backed in and look to be taking a step back this year. But from the QB's point of view for going against good defenses, the toughest D's Leftwich will face are: S.D., Oak. & Den., that's pretty much it. Buffalo, N.O., Pitt., Car., Indy, T.B., Atl, TN, & K.C. are very up and down when it comes to defense.

Damn, I like Leftwich >_<

To be quick, I don't think Leftwich is going to be much of a "surprise". In 2005, before he went down, he had 15 TDs and 5 INTs. Now, that 3:1 Ratio is pretty damn good. I don't think he can pull it off though. His WRs are mostly overrated, and despite the fact every one of them is 6'3"+, there's really no one to stretch the field to take advantage of Leftwich's arm. They need a legitimate deep threat.

My surprise player of 2007 is Alex Smith. The QB from the 49ers, not the TE. After being thrown to the wolves his first year (50.9% rate, 1 TD, 11 INTs, 40.8 Rating), he showed IMMENSE improvement last year. He improved his completion percentage by 7.2%, threw 15 more TDs to only 5 more INTs (or 16/16), and put up a rating of 74.8. He also had 4 games with a rating above 100.

Now he has one of the better RBs in the league in the backfield with him (Gore). He also has TWO absolute burners at WR (Lelie, who in 2004 averaged 20.1 Yards over 54 catches, and Hill, a rookie from Washington State, who ran a 4.32 40), and two possesion receivers (Jackson, from Seattle, a proven vet, and Battle, who played with Smith last year).

Contrary to what his 3:1 ratio was last year before the injury, if he does good in 2007 and finally fulfills his promise as a QB it will be a surprise because no one outside Jacksonville thinks he's going to pan-out, especially since his preseason has been a little sub-par so far. I still think that if Alex Smith improves it's less of a shock over Leftwich.Smith is expected to improve w/ his supporting cast and his upgraded defense to boot and, like you said, his "IMMENSE" improvement last year anyway.

The thing is though Alex had a decent cast last year (Gore, Robinson, Battle, Bryant). But. . .

While Alex did put up 4 games of over a 100 rating (By comparision, Manning had 7, Brady had 5), he also 6 games of less than a 55 Rating, another 2 at 69.0 and 66.7, and anther 4 between 84.8 and 92.7.

I expect Smith to finally show some consistancy. In his 8 good games he was 143/228 (62.7%) for 1654 Yards, 11 TDs, 2 TDs, as compared to his bad games, where he was 114/214 (53.3%), for 1236 Yards, 5 TDs, 14 INTs. That's a 97.0 Rating compared to a 51.1 Rating.

Like I said, Smith needs to learn consistancy, which I believe he will. On the flipside, I DID say he showed immense improvement, but that could just be a "one year wonder" year (which I don't believe it will). Alex still has too many nay-sayers, believing his hands are too small (which they aren't. He was measured at the combine), not having a strong enough arm (does Rivers have a "strong" arm? Not by a long shot), he was a system QB at Utah (Pffft, just because you're in a system doesn't mean you're actually good. Ex: Timmy Chang, Hawaii).

Leftwich still needs to develop a sense of touch to do well.

There's no way Smith will be a one-year wonder with his supporting cast growing stronger by the season. I think his "nay-sayers" are dwindling quickly since last season, and will continue to. Also, w/ Leftwich, his touch I agree still need work, and i'm not his biggest fan, but I just think that the pieces of the puzzle are there for him to finally succeed for an entire season and to re-sign with the Jags, and hold off Garrard too while he's at it.

Garrard is a better fit to that team. He is more mobile, and his arm is a better fit than Leftwich's because not only is he more accurate, he has a better sense of touch; something useful when your WRs are just out-of-position TEs that won't scare anyone deep (and the one person that could, MATT JONES!, is an overrated hack who can't catch).

Smith will surprise more. He has yet to finish a season with a rating above 80 (despite not playing an entire 16 games yet, Leftwich still has "finished" above 80 twice, once damn near 90) . As Leftwich already posted a rating of 89.1 in 2005 I cannot see how anything less than that would be a surprise (I say less because I doubt he can beat it).

How in the world can anyone tell yet? Any argument is a moot point since the season is'nt started yet. It would be nothing more than speculation at best!
Dumb TD

It's a tournament mister"jerk"

August 27, 2007  12:11 AM ET

and I'm thinking of a player

August 27, 2007  12:20 AM ET

You dont need to have much of a defense to stop Leftwich, he does a great job of that himself. However, Jags D is sick and Jones-Drew is a potential monster. My suprise player this year is handsdown Matt Schaub of the Texans. Watch and see how much better the Texans are with a QB who doesnt hold the ball for like 7 seconds every pass then get sacked like 50% of his passes, aka David Carr.

August 27, 2007  01:02 AM ET

I was gonna say Schaub. . .gah -_-"

THE REST:

And let's not forget the beast at TE. Davis is a matchup nightmare. The only LB in the NFL who could even keep up with him is Manny Lawson (Davis ran a 4.38 40, faster than most of the RBs/WRs. Lawson recorded a 4.4, one of the fastest ever for a LB), who just so happens to be Davis' teammate. He's also way too large and strong for corners (6'3", 253 lbs, 42" vert, 33 reps on the bench).

The offense is set up much better for Smith to accel this season than for Leftwich to.

August 27, 2007  01:50 AM ET

daunte culpepper any1?

August 27, 2007  01:51 AM ET

I was thinking Culpepper but. . .*points to avatar*

I hate being accused of homerism.

August 27, 2007  09:58 AM ET

Oh Bio 1590, you aren't ever accused of being a homer. You are one.
I said the Chargers would win both games against the Raiderd and you swore at me. That sounds like someone is being a baby...
You never answered my fanMail either.

August 27, 2007  09:59 AM ET

Raiders*

August 27, 2007  10:30 AM ET

Smith's game in Chicago might hurt your argument, Bio. Sure, great defense, but none too impressive.

August 27, 2007  12:03 PM ET

No, I called you a **** because you called a situation "pathetic".

Just because you're up by over 20 points doesn't give you the right to comment on your own throwdown saying it's pathetic.

August 27, 2007  01:33 PM ET

And I'll throw this out there for the hell of it. . .

Leftwich was on pace for 288/488 (59.0%) for 3091 Yards, 19 TDs, and 13 INTs, for a rating of 79.5

-All better numbers than Smith

August 27, 2007  01:37 PM ET

the key words there are "on pace". he'll finally stay healthy this year and shock alot of people but until then his success this year will be a surprise to many, many people who didn't see what he was on pace for.

August 27, 2007  02:16 PM ET

"On pace" is basically extrapolating "per game" numbers.

It's the same thing basically.

Leftwich was on pace for better and had better per game numbers.

August 27, 2007  07:19 PM ET

I'll be surprised if Ted Ginn & Reggie Bush last 16 games...
I'll be surprised if Brady Quinn doesn't cry(again) once it's official that's he not the starter in Brown Town...
I'll be surprised if the Bengals have less than 7 arrests during the season...
Will anyone else be surprised?

August 27, 2007  07:43 PM ET

Oh, I am sorry. I didn't know I couldn't comment on my own throwdown, Bio 1590. I said it was pathetic at the SCORE. It was like 30-5 and he didn't quit. I thought the score was pathetic. You had no right to call me what you did...

August 27, 2007  10:29 PM ET

Lefty will be a surprise. He'll play in 15 games. Get nicked up in 5 of them. I'm predicting 3230 yds 18 tds 8 ints.

August 28, 2007  12:09 AM ET

Well this is ironic.

The SI magazine with Nick Saban on the cover (article about Alabama). . .

In the inside the NFL part. . .

There's a comment about the author being surprised it Leftwich DOESN'T put up those numbers.
