The most underrated team entering the 2010 NFL season is the Carolina Panthers.

I feel the most underrated, underhyped team is the Carolina Panthers. They are a scarce playoff pick amongst "experts" and many pick them to finish below .500.

Jake Delhomme had a terrible beginning to the season with his 18INTs. Matt Moore looked like more then a suitable replacement going 4-1 in his five starts with a 98.5 quarterback rating. Wins against the Cardinals 34-21 {5 INTs of Kurt Warner} Vikings 26-7{NFC title game last year} and Atlanta Falcons 28-19 show that Carolina did have solid wins last year.

They went 8-4 in the NFC, specifically 4-2 in their division. Their .500 record can be attributed to an 0-4 against the AFC East, they lost each game by 11 points or less so they certainly played four tough games.

They have one of the best, if not the best dual back attack in the league with DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart.

In the NFC South, no team has made the playoffs in back to back seasons since 2002 when the division formed and no team has repeated as division champion.

The Saints had a great run last year, i believe the Panthers can have a great run this year and get to the playoffs. If nothing else, they deserve a bit more respect.

Well, I was going to choose Tennessee, but I'll go a different route

I'll take the San Francisco 49ers

They were ranked 12th in the ESPN power rankings, but I think they could be a much better team than even that indicates

They have a great defense already, ranking 6th in rush yards allowed last year. They had a questionable pass defense, but they drafted safety Taylor Mays to start to shore that up

Offensively, they have one of the best RBs in the league in Frank Gore and a great young WR in Crabtree. Pair him with Vernon Davis, an improving Alex Smith, and a "take no ****" coach and they can make some serious noise

With Arizona suffering serious losses, I think the 49ers are the favorites for the division now. With a solid run defense and a good offense, they have the makings of a team that can make noise in the playoffs.

The Panthers have too many questions. Will Matt Moore catch on, will Steve Smith be healthy, will the defense be able to replace Peppers. Too many what ifs

How can the 49ers possibly be underrated when they are clearly the best team in their division and every analyst on the planet picks them to win their division? That would guarentee them a top 4 spot in the playoffs.

All of that stuff you said about the 49ers is true, they are immensly talented on both sides of the ball and the entire world already knows it, hence the reason they are not underrated.

My pick of the Panthers I believe is more appropriate for this TD because nobody is picking Carolina to win the NFC South with the Saints and Falcons around.

The Rams are, well the Rams. The Cardinals dont have a starting quarterback. The Seahawks might be the most OVERrated team in the league.

Not sure how a team that is clearly the best team in their division could be considered underrated or underhyped.

The Panthers are 20th in that SI power ranking. I believe they easily belong in the top half of the league.

The big question mark with Carolina will be their defense which must rise to the occasion without Julius Peppers. Their defense has been the 2nd best in the preseason in points allowed behind Baltimore. Not a bad start for a young unit.

First - determining who is and isn't underrated is part of this TD. I feel like the 49ers are underrated. Are they the best team in the division? Probably. But I'm saying they could be a serious playoff contender, something most analysts aren't saying

Second - Carolina has to face two different playoff teams for a total of 4 games. They won't be winning those games. At best, they luck into one win out of those 4 games. Then, they also play Cincy, San Fran, Baltimore, and Pittsburgh. That's a helluva schedule that they'll have to overcome

Third - Absolutely nothing in the preseason should be used to predict the regular season. Fun fact: The year the Lions went 0-16, they went 4-0 in the preseason

The 49ers have the ability to be a serious playoff contender. At most, the analysts are calling them a 3 or 4 seed and first round and out this year. Carolina would be like to reach a .500 record. They most certainly won't finish higher than 3rd in the division.

Sorry for the short argument. Got class that I need to get to

First of all I respect your school first mentality, I am a college student myself. Secondly, I don't understand how being a 3rd or 4th seed doesn't qualify you as a serious playoff threat? Define serious. Doesn't every team that make the playoffs have a chance? I.E. The Jets last year...who were a half away from going to the super bowl. Isn't San Diego always a serious playoff threat and they never win anything?

All I keep hearing on sports shows is how this is finally the year for the division win from SF and a playoff run. I haven't heard much about Carolina because nobody is talking about them!

Carolina produced a pair of 1000 yard backs last year, and who knows what's going to happen with Matt Moore but that 98.5 rating last year was definitely impressive. I like the drafting of Brandon Lafell and Steve Smith is always dangerous as a number 1 WR but he had an "off" year last year of under 1000 yards and 7tds.

With a young quarterback, two young RBs, and pretty much a universally young defense, Carolina looks to me like a team on the rise. San Francisco looks like a team that has already risen. San Francisco is not underrated, people know they're playoff bound.

being a 3rd or 4th seed doesn't qualify you as a serious playoff threat

most of the time, these teams might have the 4th or 5th best record and lots of times lose to wild card teams. So, just because you make the playoffs doesn't mean you're set for a deep run.

You also help my points

*San Diego in the past years has been the 2, 4, 3, and 1st, yet haven't won a single Superbowl.
*However, 3 winners in the last decade have been wild card

So just because San Fran can make the playoffs doesn't mean it's a given they'll make a serious run. And, more to the point, people aren't picking them to make a run at the Superbowl.

However, like I pointed out earlier, the keys to success in the playoffs is a tough run D and great rushing attack, which San Fran most assuredly has. And they bolstered their already solid run game with 2 first round offensive linemen who are both starting.

Carolina just doesn't have the tools set in place to take down Atlanta and New Orleans this year

I contemplated them, but I just don't think they're going to be that good this year. It will be near impossible for Johnson to repeat what he did last year and they might be the 3rd best team in their division.

Correct.

SF 8-8 in 2009. The team is neither up nor down.

"First of all I respect your school first mentality, I am a college student myself. Secondly, I don't understand how being a 3rd or 4th seed doesn't qualify you as a serious playoff threat?"

Big mistake, JPetrosino13.

Read the stats of each team first. Then discard the numbers put up by the flagrant UNI Panthers!!!! Then sit back and relax as your number one team beats the crap out of everyone else.....

I agree. So?

August 31, 2010  07:49 PM ET

Voting left. Rights second argument, especially the first point, lost me. If they are the best in their division, aren't they a lock for the playoffs?

I'll check back for right's final argument.

well who thought they would go 13-3 and win their division 2 years ago?
i sure didnt

who thought they would go 0-6 to start last year and then finish 8-8?

i think they are a streaky team and vy looks better than ever and i think they will surprise many

September 1, 2010  12:48 PM ET

i think the 49ers are not underrated in terms of making the playoffs but they are underrated in terms of making a deep playoff run

I just mean in general. I haven't heard anybody talking about this team and I think they are extremely talented. With how crazy the NFC playoff picture is just about guarnteed to be...wouldnt surprise me at all if Carolina got in.

September 1, 2010  02:03 PM ET

Much respect Rude dog, thank you for the TD and good luck with the voting.
